@lheroisme3 роки тому
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 in fact it does, in the section on traffic lights. “GREEN means you may go on if the way is clear. Take special care if you intend to turn left or right and give way to pedestrians who are crossing” Totally agree with your observations on pedestrians, but as age-old wisdom dictates, two wrongs don’t add up to right. Peds are unpredictable, and very unlikely to have any liability in case of any accidents. Appreciate that it is frustrating to keep losing momentum at crossings, but that’s the nature of city riding. If you don’t like it, buy a motorcycle and stick to cycling on country roads / spin classes. BTW I am a cyclist, a motorcyclist, and sometimes even a pedestrian in London.
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling90073 роки тому
@@lheroisme I found a clear gap on all of those green crossings, and if someone walked into that gap I stopped for them or went around. A few started to walk out without looking and heard my warning and stopped. They have a duty to let on coming traffic pass and wait for a safe gap before crossing. Because they step one foot out without looking doesn’t give them right of way and I stand by my statement that the Highway Code does not state that they do. Reality of cycling in a busy city like London during rush hour is that there are a vast number of pedestrians who are in the road as either they don’t look, or they do, see you and just don’t care. So if no road traffic can proceed when a pedestrian has ignored the rules and is in the road then we should an all traffic and pedestrianise everything. That’ll be a massive blow to social mobility, deliveries, and the economy at large. A realistic solution is to do more to teach people from a young age the importance of following the crossing rules and to look where they are going. This is what’s behind the jaywalking rules in many states in the US. Personally I think that’s a bit draconian but we need to do something as these pedestrians take no responsibility yet risk not only their health but the health of others!

It's down to you to drive with due care and attention In a perfect world everyone would obey all the rules of the road But we live in an imperfect work The best way to avoid crashes and accidents is to assume everyone else on the road has no idea what they are doing. Just because you may have right of way doesn't mean ignore everything around you In bigger cities with congestion expect pedestrians to emerge from nowhere, anticipate a door opening in stationary traffic, or vehicles not indicating, even cyclists weaving in and out of traffic. The amount of times I've seen road users not paying attention to their surroundings because they have right of way, you may have right of way, and the other person is at fault, but you also need to proceed with due care and attention People should follow the rules of the road, but we don't live in paradise. Back when i first learned to ride, city traffic here looked a lot like what we can see in this video. Only problem with that is after a whole lot of tax money is spent paying for this there will be a bunch of idiots with bikes made out of matchsticks who will still insist on riding in the road. As per example in video of "cycle lanes are not compulsory" such a disrespectful comment. Cycle lanes were built upon our request as cyclists for our safety and other road users yet you don't want to use it as it is not convenient enough for you!!!!! Winds me up. @ryansedgwick-londoncycling90073 роки тому
@@diamondsearle Trust me, where cycle lanes are available cyclists use them. They are not a silver bullet though and there are many times cyclists need to be in the road: 1. Many areas don’t have cycle lanes, or the cycle lane may be on the other side of the road where you can’t get to it easily. 2. There are often cars, taxis, buses, delivery lorries parked in the cycle lane. In these cases cycles will need to move into the road to go around them. 3. If I need to turn right at the junction ahead I’ll need to get out of the cycle lane in advance to get over to the right hand lane. 4. Similarly cycle lanes often stop before roundabouts, and cyclists will need to get into the correct lane etc. If you see a cycle ahead of you just treat it the same as if it was a slower car. Just hold back and be patient. Trust me, cyclists don’t want to be in the middle of the road with impatient drivers tucked up behind them any longer than necessary! They’ll clear out of the way soon as they can.
@diamondsearle3 роки тому
Most of your points I agree with (I am a cyclist also) and am just having a rant there is obviously no issues when you are at roundabouts, junctions etc traffic should be moving slower in these areas anyway. I disagree that cycle lanes are not used just because they are not as convenient or easy to get too. We have two cycle lanes on a wide pavement area off the road area as this is too narrow however not one single roadie uses the cycle lane while the majority of other bikers use them. Why is this? I can only assume its due to them not wanting to slow down for junctions. When the cycle lane is not used this causes serious and dangerous issues on this section of road, dangerous situations that are easily avoided by using the specially built cycle lanes. At least in our area. Another instance is if your holding people up you should give way and make every effort to allow people to pass. If your the slowest thing on the road anyway. Who knows (not you) why the people behind might be in a rush. I got taken to hospital with a broken leg once from a mtb accident and got held up on a single track road by 2 road cyclists who refused to move over and let us pass for over 5minutes. They gave us the finger when we beeped them. Gotally selfish attitudes. These are the people that drive me mad!! Nobody owns the roadways but slower gives way to faster and faster should stay clear.

Otherwise pedestrians need to use the traffic crossings, or they must stop, look, let oncoming traffic pass (road traffic has right of way), then wait for a safe gap before crossing.

No such thing as Jay walking in the uk (such a shit rule in the US IMO). Pedestrians can cross at any time, and they have right of way on the road according to the Highway Code hierarchy of road users. Faster moving traffic and more dangerous vehicles have to slow down. Buses and HGVs are very dangerous if you collide with them. However they can't change direction quickly so if you pay attention it's quite straightforward to stay out of their way. Too many cyclists fail to do that. Biggest danger of collision cycling in London is pedestrians, closely followed by other cyclists - in both cases due to their unpredictability. In 10 years of cycling in London I had two accidents where pedestrians just stepped off the pavement without looking, but I didn't feel in any great danger generally as I was moving at the same speed as the traffic. I now live in the countryside and don't cycle nearly as much. Mixing with cars and trucks driving at 60mph feels much more dangerous.

@ryansedgwick-londoncycling90074 роки тому
Well I do love a bit of Wagner! 😉👍 I'm pleased you enjoyed the video, thank you. The new bike is a Genesis Day One 10 2019 gravel bike. It's single speed as I only use the cycle for commuting and my route is flat. I've swapped the tyres for Continental Hardshell road tyres and I've increased the gearing. It's harder away from the lights but I can get it up to about 25mph along the open stretches of the Embankment.
@tonetoobtwo4 роки тому
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 I'll try and remember to ask you how the hardshell's are working out the next time you upload. If you can comfortably spin at 25mph, then it must be brutal from a standing start, but I guess low maintenance has a price. Is your commute mostly Thames corridor, and how many miles? Just curious, hope you don't mind me asking.
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling90074 роки тому
@@tonetoobtwo I've been using Continental Gatorskins for years and they are a great commuting tyre. They aren't completely bulletproof, but I only get a couple of punctures a year, and I cycle 90 miles a week on city roads. This is the first time I've used the hardshells (after a recommendation) and so far so good. I'm bad at doing this but if you regularly check your tyres and dig out the little bits of glass and stone that get embedded in the rubber (I use a pointy knife) it stops them working their way through to give you a flat. It took a bit of getting used to the single speed but I love it now. The gearing it came with was good but I found my legs spinning too fast on the quicker sections. So simple to look after though, will save me a fair bit in maintenance costs each year. My commute is West end of Putney to St Paul's, and back each day. I cycle over Putney Bridge, Kings Road to Chelsea and then get onto the Thames Embankment as soon as I can. Then follow them river past Parliament all the way to Blackfriars Bridge, then up towards St Paul's. It's 9 miles each way. Do you cycle in the city?
@tonetoobtwo4 роки тому
@@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 Thanks. I tried Gatorskins and they were OK, but I didn't find them appreciably more resistant than GP's and the ride is better on the latter. Most of my mileage is rural, leisure and there isn't much that a hawthorne won't go through if it contacts the tyre at the right angle (pardon the pun). I have tubeless on my higher miles bike now, and am a convert, they are pretty low maintenance until you have a hole, at which point they become a real PITA. May try the hardskins on my winter ride, just to see if they can stand up to natures stinger device. Stay stafe.I look forward to your autumn upload ;)
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling90074 роки тому
@@tonetoobtwo Oh yes, I'm not sure much will stand up to a Hawthorne! It's normally small sharp bits of stone or glass that get mine, no big thorns thankfully. I think tubeless are the future, not sure if I'm ready for them yet. I'm less worried about ride quality as it's just a commute. My new bike is steel so whilst it's relatively heavy, the ride now is super comfortable. Happy and safe cycling to you too. Have a great week. 🙂👍

It is your fault. Go slowly to the city center.
@ryansedgwick-londoncycling90074 роки тому
What's my fault? There was no accident to be at fault for! My average speed is 15mph, speed is not the problem. I'm slower than the cars on the same roads and they present far more danger to pedestrians. Everyone knows that the roads are dangerous, that is why we drill into our kids to look before walking into the road. Shame many adults seem to think these crossing rules no longer apply to them!
