I think Ham and pretty much everyone else has always seen the offensive threat and overall potential of a good player in Rui. Problem is, a lot of times he's kind of a defensive liability, hence why it's often you see cam reddish sub in to cover that hole. And even then his offense can be inconsistent sometimes. Like, when he's hot, it's fire and so fun to watch, but if he gets cold, he never seems to heat up. I think he has a lot of potential, and if he develops more I have confidence he'll have a more permanent place and bigger role in the lakers' core, even after bron retires or goes away. But until then, holes need to be filled. Besides, subbing in and rotating players isn't always that bad. The change keeps both you and the enemy on their toes. It brings a new set of eyes in, and the subbed out players can watch the game from an outside perspective to figure out what they can improve next. There's not one way to play this game, and there's no solve-it-all lineup that you can play all game all year without fail, not with the salary cap.
