LOST FOR 35 YEARS: MEL BLANC INTERVIEW FROM 1979!

Only a handful of random Californians saw this in-depth interview with the Looney Tunes voice master when it aired on public accessTV in 1979. Furthermore, until a week ago, I was convinced that the original tape had long ago been "wiped" -- but when a batch of DVD-Rs came back from being digitized last week... THERE IT WAS! Complete and none the worse for wear!
So wh-wh-whaddaya waiting' for? Check it out! From host Dennis Tardan's interview series Reasonably Spontaneous Conversations (the episode w/Peter Tork of The Monkees is also up here on UKposts, if you hadn't noticed!)
(PS: Pardon my occasional fiddling about with SFX and subtle BG music -- it's better than a "watermark"/time code, you have to admit...)

Dennis Tardan is an excellent interviewer. He asks questions and gives his guests the opportunity to speak without interrupting them. That is rare today. Mr. Blanc died on July 10, 1989 at Cedars-Sinai at 81 years of age due to complications from emphysema and heart disease. He had been hospitalized for two months. It is July 28, 2020 and his son Noel is 81 years of age and is retired. He also was a voice actor like his father.

I just happened on this, pretty sure I directed, lit, and did the sound. I had a thing about NOT using AGC on the audio. Unfortunately this is cropped for 16:9. This was recorded on Sony 1/2" reel-to-reel video tape at Theta Cable, 2939 Nebraska Avenue in Santa Monica, CA., now Spectrum.
@screamengine
@screamengine Рік тому
@@BC-rc2dq You did a mighty fine job! World class!!! No smoothing filter in modern software could do this, at least not easily. And the cam/video is rock solid. Probably the best I've seen from the era! Is there slight compression on there in place of AGC?
@BC-rc2dq
@BC-rc2dq Рік тому
We didn't have anything more than a Shure mixer. Set levels and go, watched levels as we went. The Sony decks had AGC, but it would pump up when anyone paused speaking and then the air conditioning noise became thunderous, so I never used it. No biggie, and we shot about six shows a day Our studio was very small, but many of the people producing the shows had lots of industry connections, so we had many big celebrity guests. Many more than a "Hollywood" PR firm brought in for our pay TV service (Z Channel), which was ironically amusing. I remember Jack Lemmon, Robin Williams, John Ritter, Marty Feldman, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Jesse White, Dusty Springfield, Elsa Lanchester, Mervyn Leroy, Jay Leno as just a few. Karen Black was breast-feeding at my desk one day. Public Access was on channel 3, and the cable system had 14 to 36 channels, so viewers clicking between CBS and NBC would often stumble on Public Access shows. I often heard that guests enjoyed just being able to have an uninterrupted discussion without being staged.

Believe me, I'm more stunned than anyone -- it was labelled on the tape but (unlike the Peter Tork one) I had thought I was too late to save it and that Dennis had taped over it to archive episodes of our early '80s show in Texas (where the George Strait feature on this channel came from), until I took a batch of tapes in to be digitized and when I got and watched the discs -- Holy moley, it was all on there intact! And though I posted this here without ads or other monetization, since WB recently licensed some footage from it on their Bugs Bunny 80th birthday program, both Dennis and myself got a nice little paycheck. (BTW, now I'm wondering... is that Bugs special the impetus for the upswing in views and comments of late?) -- KWL aka 1B2S
