I watched 'When Louis Met Jimmy' long before any of his crimes came to light. I never suspected he was a criminal or anything, but one thing I new for sure was I didn't like him.

I think you might be right, just that Saville never really presented himself as vulnerable; more that there was this weird ability with him to make people accept some of the more unsavoury things he said and did out in the open. The 'Saville' documentary Louis did as a follow-up after Saville's death and the subsquent revelations has a perfect example of this in that he turns up at the office used by Louis' team and promptly starts stripping and changing clothes there, in the open, and no-one really questioned it because Saville was just.. Quirky, seemingly. But in hindsight there's an ability to basically groom people in accepting that behaviour and almost condoning it (Louis has admitted he himself felt groomed by Saville in hindsight), which he naturally employed in a different way with the people he abused sexually.

Next time you see that absurd old fossil Edwina Currie on GMTV defending the latest scandal from this government, (and she out of front line politics for over 25 years), consider how as a Health Minister in the late 80's she gave Saville a pass, an office and free reign of Broadmoor. Yes, in the documentary at one point Saville practically goaded Louis to dare make an allegation and it was as if he knew he was untouchable. I suspect it is because he knew that the pedos in power would protect him lest he name them.
