Great video. But instead of making a directory and then mounting the hard drives into it, you can just share /media/pi; as whenever you add another hard drive, it automatically gets mounted to /media/pi. The following permissions will have to be changed in The file permissions menu in webmin though- user: root and group: root. There you go.. whenever you plug in a new hard drive, it automatically pops up in the shared folder. Tried this and it worked. Great for sharing multiple hard drives on your network. Cheers!! :D

This is so good. It's surprising I come back to check it. One thing I keep forgetting is the correct format of the URL for webmin. I must try and remember that in future I should always use 192.168.1.105:10000 The things I forget are https instead of http and the :10000 - which is absolutely needed. Anyway, your instructions always help.

Great. One question. What about an interface to the various devices you'd like to access the NAS with? What you show here is a system that can run by itself with out help from a desktop. Just what I've been looking for. But when I want to watch something on my TV or cell, what app do I use to enter the NAS. I've viewed other videos where they use Plex, but this means a desktop would be involved. Please don't take this as a criticism. I'm really impressed with your presentation..

Hello. Thanks for the excellent tutorial! I have successfully set the server but I have 2 crucial questions: 1)I don't see my USB HDD ever going to sleep as it did with OMV server and Windows IoT Samba based server. Is there anything I can do? They say that a HDD's life is dramatically reduced if it's being powered 24/7 and have no reason to disagree with that... 2)How can I create user profiles? Webmin interface seems quite complicated and I haven't got to find how am I going to create ''users''. Many thanks once again!

You helped me a lot with this !! I managed to adapt your tutorial to setup the NAS file serve on a old PC. Even i am a total linux ignorant. I only have one problem. In the rig i setup i have the Ubuntu server installed and running on a USB drive and the media i want to share is located in 5 hard drives total of 7 partitions, i manager do share all of them, but after restart samba no longer see the files.. the drives unmounted themselves. I am frying my brains out !!! I have to mount manually the drives all the time I turn the server off... any ideas?

This is exactly what I was loocking for! One thing though, instead of attaching a USB-drive I would like to use two SATA-dics mirrored in a RAID. Will that be a problem using a Raspberry since it does not carry SATA ports? Expantion card or what? Also can I setup the RAID configuration from within Webmin? Thanks for a great vid!
@NovaspiritTech
@NovaspiritTech 8 років тому
you can use lvm which is a software based raid within linux. if your interested in can make a video about that later
@christianpihlgren1
@christianpihlgren1 8 років тому
Yes please. That would be a great help for me. Now I am running a Windows 7 computer using two SATA discs in RAID 1 and sharing them on the LAN. I guess it works, but It seems much more energy efficient and space saving with for instance a Raspberry or another Single Board Computer. Haven't found any SBC with two SATA ports yet though. Hence the question.

2 Questions: 1. Can I use Raspbian Lite (Jessie) for the NAS. Since I don't need the full desktop for the NAS, I was hoping that the Lite version would work. 2. If I can use Raspbian Lite, what would change in the setup? Thanks for the excellent video (and links)

I'm not running my RPi headless so I didn't need webmin. However when I've gone through other tutorials and tried setting my samba up everything works fine until I try to connect to the drive via a windows device, it says I don't have the permissions to access it even though I'm using the credentials I've setup in both samba and linux.

Hi, I liked you video! Congrats! I have a question, Is this NAS work with Apple OS ? Like time Machine and ITunes ?
@GeoNeilUK
@GeoNeilUK 8 років тому
+Renato Amaral If you're talking about connecting a Mac formatted disk to the Pi... First off, why? If it's being connected permanently and you have nothing on the disk that you want to keep, you're better off formatting it to something Linux native like ext4. Secondly, if there is stuff on the disk that you want to keep, you'll need to install HFS support on the Pi... sudo apt-get install hfsprogs hfsplus hfsutils and possibly this package which is described as an "Apple Time Machine FUSE mount" which I assume lets the Pi access Apple Time Machines connected to it. sudo apt-get install tmfs If you're talking about whether a Mac would be able to connect to this NAS, well, I believe Mac OSX has support for Windows networking or Samba shares, which is basically what you're setting up here. I'm only assuming here though as I have no experience with Macs to be honest.

After following this video, which worked perfectly thank you, I shutdown the Raspi and moved it to its permanent location. When it booted back up my windows network found the drive, but none of the media was on it. I re-ran the sudo mount /dev/sdaX /media/hdd command to mount the drive again and it works fine. Do i have to do this each time the power goes out?
@peterfunda1
@peterfunda1 8 років тому
+Andy Meggs you need to add an entry to your /etc/fstab file so that your disks gets mounted automatically on each boot, google fstab for more info. Fyi, it is better to use the /dev/disk/by-uuid/ path to mount a disk in the fstab file as the sdX naming can change when you have another usb storage device plugged in during the Pi boot.
@GeoNeilUK
@GeoNeilUK 8 років тому
Couple of things... I think it's better to mount by UUID rather than /dev/sdx mountpoint. If you're using more than one disk or have more than one storage device connected by USB, the /dev locations could change between boots. You can find out the UUIDs of the disks through the command ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/ Which will give you the uuid of each disk and the mountpoint it links to eg... pi@bazbox:~ $ ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jan 5 20:07 76b58fb3-8d0d-4084-a071-fa11a31af738 -> ../../sda1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Jan 5 20:07 86EA-017B -> ../../mmcblk0p1 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Jan 5 20:07 ad6203a1-ec50-4f44-a1c0-e6c3dd4c9202 -> ../../mmcblk0p2 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jan 5 20:07 fc527572-c210-4b0a-99bf-dbceb1c4736f -> ../../sdb1 The extra long hexadecimal numbers are all ext4 partitions including two USB drives (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb) the 8 digit hexadecimal number is /boot which is, of course, FAT. NTFS also uses the 8 digit UUID. Also if the disks are going to be permanently connected to the Pi running Linux, you'd probably be better off reformatting them to native Linux filesystems such as ext4 rather than NTFS or FAT. Now I'm not to au fait with terminal applications for doing this, I prefer GParted which is a graphical app for Linux, meaning it can be installed on the Pi but not on a PC unless you use Linux on the PC. Please note: reformatting the disk will wipe all data on the disk, only do this if there's no data on the disk that you want to keep and can't back up elsewhere. If you're going to do this using GParted on the Pi then you'll need a graphical login solution, the least hassle is to install xrdp and use the Remote Desktop client built into Windows, or you can install an X Server to go with Putty (making sure you enable X11 forwarding) though if you run GParted from the terminal, you will need to enter... gksudo gparted ...which will run the program as root, which you have to do.

A NOOB question, I have installed both the Raspbian and OSMC on to a single 16GB microSD via NOOB, now what will happen if I expand the filesystem in Raspbian, will that cause any problem to the OSMC? I'm on a Raspberry Pi 2 Model B by the way.

Can't get access on the shared folder. Settings for webmin are the same as in the vid i.e. allowing guest access, etc. Running windows 7. Keeps telling me that I have no permission to access the drive. Please help.

Great video! (as we're used from the excellent Don-video's..) All works.. until the point where I want to access the share.. Permission problem :-( Although configured as in video it asks for credentials and doesn't accept my login.. (and apparently I'm not the only one blocked on that point.. Let's hope that Don (or any other bright-mind) can dig into that..)

Following the tutorial now I am able to see the share (pi share) from my Windows computer, but didn´t show me the content and can´t create files or folders on it. Any idea?

Hey, you did great videos. But I have one problem with N.A.S. Server. I can see the files in the shared folder, but can not write. You have any ideas? I test many of the settings in the file smb.conf. Copy here your setttings of smb.conf, please!
