I found a fellow local to me that had a 123 sitting out behind his business and it hadnt run in I dont know how long. One day I asked if he would be interested in selling it and he sold it to me for the scrap price of steel and told me an interesting story about the truck! It was originally purchased by Memphis Equipment when it was released from the US Govt and then it was bought by a company working on the Alaskan pipeline, it had some gigantic post hole digger on the back of the truck and it was used to drill the holes in the ground that the pipeline supports were then mounted into. I hired a buddy with a large wrecker to go pick up the truck and bring it over to my shop and it took me a while changing all the filters cleaning the fuel system out including the tank then had to get batteries for it and after a week or so prepping it I got the engine started, I believe it had 2 or 3 bad injectors that had to be replaced but no big deal. Then came draining everything on the driveline and refilling with new lubes and I did find a set of TMs and a Lube order so I could adequately clean and lube everything in an OK manner. One early Sat. morning I got up early and fired her up and I only had to drive about a half mile to a buddies house out in the country and we drove all over his farm that day the engine ran pretty darned well but did fine a few fuel leaks that I had to fix and all the differential braking air assemblies on the steering column had been somewhat dismantled and plugged. I got a call one day from a fellow that was restoring another 123 and he offered me the right amount of money for mine and it was gone. I must say that I felt very fortunate to have the experience of getting to work on and drive a tractor like this one, I learned a fair amount and had a lot of fun!

I feel like the Army probably had some more comfortable prototypes and they said, hell no. Make it a bone jarring, teeth rattling sweat lodge.

No It was built for Vietnam and the soft ground The tires are 1400X24 and only held 55 lbs of air it had between 265 and 300 hp going into a 5 speed Mack transmission with a hi lo transfer case. Some guys might say it was a duplex but you couldn’t shift it like one. I don’t know what the gear ratio was in the rears but the top speed was 43.4 mph at 3250 rpm’s. It didn’t ride to bad due to its shock absorber drivers seat. I was assigned to one for 2.5 years in the regular Army hauling D-7E dozers

The original M123's & M125's were gas trucks that came with TH844's from Leroi.The M123A1C's were upgraded to the V903's from Cummins but only just them,the M125's were always gas trucks. The only trucks with multi-fuel/hyper cycle engines were the M35A2's-M756A2's & M51A2's-M543A2's although there was certain M520's-M877's which had their own variant of the multi-fuel engines.

Didn't these originally have huge Gasoline engines??? Le Roi or something??
@4321grp

The older ones had a Continental Chrome-Moly gasoline engine, if I remember right.

@@4321grp I had a quick look in my Observers Military vehicles (from 1945 on) and it says Engine = Le Roi T-H 844 V8 844 cu now that is huge...for a gasoline engine....making 286 BHP at 2600 rpm....I would not want to be fuelling that beast from my pocket, even in the US glory days of cheap gasoline. It adds that later models (made by Consolidated) had a 300 Bhp V8 Diesel. I Love...this 10 Ton Class of truck especially the Cold War era.....UK were using Leyland Martian, Scammel Constructor and Thorneycroft 'Big Ben' 10 Ton Tractors (But as Plant shifters...tanks by this time were much heavier) Italy used an Italian (OM) built version of the M123.....and West Germany used Magirus-Deutz and Faun 10 Ton Prime Movers....Not forgetting the Soviets that had their 'Lets copy the US Diamond T' and make it 6x6 KRAZ....Ooops I forgot the Froggies (how could a Brit forget our French friends😉) The French had some interesting models (very tough and underestimated trucks) in this class by Willeme and Berliet. Oddities to look at in this class.....would be the Swedish Scania...(Sweden went mostly for a slightly higher 15-20 Ton Prime mover class (because they used the British Centurion Tank and didn't see the need to have 2 classes of Prime mover) Also Tatra (Czech) had some interesting and very different ideas on how a 10 Ton and up, large powerful truck should be built.🤣 Again I love this class of truck but have no where to store one so have to make do with a 1985 Mercedes Unimog.😄.

@@Pinzpilot101 , Thank you sir, I stand corrected, I had the 10 ton Army truck confused with the 011A airfield crash trucks which used the Continental S 6820-8 Chrome Moly engine with 820 cubic inches and 310 horsepower. The 10 ton army trucks I saw in Vietnam used a V8 Cummins diesel. I'm sure the older 10 tons used the big Leroy gasoline engine, although I never got a chance to see one of those in our shop.

When this tractor had the LeRoi gas engine the TM stated the the MPG fuel usage was .75 MPG and with a top speed of under 40 mph it's little wonder it was replaced.
