These are the kind of songs he grew up on, hell we all grew up on and songs like these aren't particularly prominent in this era. This is an era of nostalgia so he's just capitalizing on his utilization of skills he already possessed and is allowing himself to make more the music that makes him happy. His lyrics on "Smoke and Drive" point this out "I heard them say they doing first, I've been doing this shit for the 8th time" he's been at this for years.
