This video is a step-by-step guide to setting up your first #WLED project. I'll tell you which #LEDstrips to choose, recommend a controller that is plug n' play, show you how to choose a power supply, and then integrate it into Home Assistant. No need to be super techie to set up WLED! Time to move on from Smart Life and Magic Home LED setups and head over to the bright side! I hope this video is helpful for anyone who has been considering WLED for their #smarthome but hasn't tried it out yet!

@@makeitworktech Hi, I would like to hear your opinion on a project that I am trying to tackle. I am going to pour concrete pathway/walkway from the street to my front door. It is around 45ft. I would like to put waterproof LED along the way, embedded in the concrete but facing up (the sky), not embedded on the side and facing the lawn. I am thinking to divide the path on sections and install every 18-24 inches a PIR and when someone steps on that section the pir would trigger the LED, stepping on the next section, next pir would be triggered on so on. Do you think I would need controller for every section or one controller would be enough considering that several pir could be working at the same time? Thank you in advance for your answer.

Awesome helpful video. What do you recommend for DIYers who are setting up LED Strips as main lighting source in ceiling with profiles built into the entire ceilings in long extended strips on entire ceiling space covering about 1000 square feet? Main question here is power source? Controller Source? And how to control individually or together as one? If I install a LED Strip all over my ceiling on the entire ceiling on every room and hallways how/what is the best way to setup from LED product, power product, and controller product.
@makeitworktech
@makeitworktech Рік тому
IF that is your main lighting, I'd use SK6812s or some 12V type strips. I would set them up as individual strips and then sync the controllers rather than all on one run, as power injection will become important.

For lowering current, i would use the WS2815 strips. 12V, individually addressable, and it brings the current down to about 1/3. They also allow for an LED to 'die' and the rest of the strip will still function. Also, there is no significant voltage drop along 5m strips, so you don't get color changes, like you do on long runs of 5V strips. So if you are doing longer runs, you cut down on current, and you need less power injection points. There is a higher idle current draw than other strips though. but i personally don't care about that, but it's something to consider.

Idle power draw should not be a problem as in a decent setup there should be a relay cutting power to the strip unless the controller is on. Wled has support for such relay control.
@tinkertron

You should explain the wiring order from wire to strip, cause if connected, you can blow the whole strip if wired incorrectly. You only get one shot at it, and if you do it wrong, that $$$ out the door... Over all great video.

I love programming the animation sequences myself for custom DIY maker projects and little art/science smashups, but I don't need that capability for all the places I use RGB LEDs. I also have some EP8266 D1-minis coming for the smaller integrations with lesser requirements (such as no need for high speed music reactivity).Fun stuff.

i have a fairly elaborate SK6812 setup (the RGBW variant of the WS2812b), about 4000 leds. i use pixelblaze v2 to control this setup to great succes, but the home assistant integration of pixelblaze is virtually non-existent. pixelblaze uses a subset of javascript to generate paterns, which is live interpreted on the device itself. this works fantastically. how does WLED compare here? it might be worth it to me to change for the HASS integration, but i do like pixelblaze an awefull lot, an they are installed already..
@Cadaverine1990
@Cadaverine1990 2 роки тому
If you make the switch to WLED, they can only handle around 750 RGBW to 1500RGB LEDs per device. so putting them all on one device is out of the question. However, with Home assistant you actually want to have each Zone of LEDs on their own circuit due to the way the controls work with Syncing. The current configuration at my home has 7 for my kitchen, 4 in the backyard, 4 for Holiday lights, and 4 bedrooms. each of the Zones has it's own ESP32 and is setup to a Master Sync Controller that turns off and on Syncing for each zone of the house.

Why di you suggest to use the 5v strip instead of the 12v one? 12V power supplies are much easier to repurpose from old equipment. In addition, is the Athom controller cutting power to the strip when it is off? A 5m strip can easily have a standby power consumption of 6-7W and on my custom controller I used a mosfet to cut the power (wled uses a pin just for this purpuse)

Govee's app allows you to address each led with a visual representation on the app of each light string. Is there anything like that with WLED? I bought of bunch of string lights and they have silly drawings that can scroll around. I want to use this to make a specific lights blink on and off. Their app worked great for that, but required you to connect the phone each time you turned it on to load the pattern. The prop I will be making needs to be portable and will have the power turn on and off often. Is there an option that will save your pattern and automatically start back up with it the next time it's turned on?
@makeitworktech
@makeitworktech Рік тому
There is "Peek" mode that allows you to see a visual representation of the light strip. There is also a way to break up the strip into segments, and control those individually. WLED will start back up with the same pattern it was turned off, but if power is completely disconnected it won't start back up that way. However, you can save presets so that you can quickly apply these effects after power is re-supplied.

They could be connected in series to a single controller, provided it has computing capacity to drive this many pixels, and you have sufficient power supply. You might also need a level shifter to ensure correct operation. Alternatively, several wled controllers can be made to act in unison. There are also other ways to achieve this with multiple controllers such as driving them with management software like xlights

I'm interested in possibly covering an entire full-size arcade cabinet with programmable LEDs, so I can control and change its appearance. Ideally, I'd like to program it to display sprites from games, but I suspect programmable LEDs are yet to support that high a resolution. Or, at least, readily available ones. There's a bunch of videos where people build much bigger addressable led installations. There's software that lets you control it, such as xlights, iirc. I've of the issues with larger installations is power supply and distribution, it gets pretty demanding when scaling then up.
