Making a boring bar for the lathe. Actually I made six boring bars but I have only a video of making one.

Why the hell would anyone buy tools like this when it’s cheaper and fun to just do it yourself? Great video

The Chinese sell these tools for less than it cost to buy the steel to make them. I don’t know how they do it considering manufacturing costs I can’t argue the fact it’s more satisfying to make them yourself though

Very nice- I did something almost exactly the same a few years back for use with an offset boring head in my mill. The standard cemented carbide bars that came with it were great on steel or cast iron, but made scary sounds on aluminum. The new tool worked great, though- left a nice mirror finish on steel or aluminum, and was damn near dead silent when cutting.

f@@tompas11A3n52KkX great video. Near end i thought you would give the bar a flat mounting base, you chose to make a special holder for it, equally good enough. I would have appreciated a closer view of it doing the boring but it seemed to work quite well😎👍

Thank you for the idea. I was able to make a whole process with my lathe using 1 inch bar tool holder.Took me a long time to do the first one but the second one can be more than 15 minutes. Tapping the 4mm hole in your circumstance is much easier and safer by taking the machine out of gear and using a tommy bar in the hole for the chuck key. This will prevent the side load from the adjustable wrench and is easier than how you started the tap. Light pressure for feed.
@tompas11A3n52KkX
@tompas11A3n52KkX 8 років тому
+john john Yes thats a way to do it. Sometimes I use a spring loaded center fitted in the chuck and by that put some pressure on the tap or tap wrench while tapping. Thanks for watching.

I'm curious why U didn't power tap the threads?
@tompas11A3n52KkX
@tompas11A3n52KkX 7 років тому
Three reasons: the tap is small - M4, the tap isn't a spiral point tap and last, this milling machine has no moving quill. You have to lower/rise the milling table manually and that is pretty hard to do without breaking the tap. Thanks for watching.

Try turning the bar slightly toward you (about 10-15 degrees), so the tip of the insert is touching the work a fraction lower, to prevent the bottom of the insert rubbing on the wall of the bore.

Someone else commented, did you do anything (select an appropriate insert) so that the bottom of the insert is slanted away from the cut? The tube curves inward, and if the side of the insert is not tilted to match then the cutting edge will never touch the material. I saw it cutting, but don't know what you did to make it work. One possibility is to raise the tool so that the cutting edge is above center by half the insert thickness or a little more, which is effectively the same as making the tool with a tilted insert, which results in a "negative" cutting edge although I could see the chip breaker that compensates for that.

Excellent, thank you. That insert has a 7 degree clearance angle, so it will work in a reasonably large hole. I like the W type inserts better than triangle, I will have to see if I can make a holder for them. Unfortunately the CoroTurn series does not have a W version which is my favorite instead of T, but others do.

Nope, a Deckel is much more robust than an Aciera F3. I do have an Aciera F3 myself, and I love to change to a Deckel. Also I'm surprised that the tap didn't brake. I do tap my hole on a drilling machine, frequency controled. Works great.Why do you use a regular bolt to tighten the toolbit ? I've made my bots excentric, so the toolbit will always be forced to the side edge.

9:20 onward I can notice the O.D. bouncing about. Then the I.D. can be seen bouncing. At first I thought it could be an optical illusion due to the turning and colorization. Take a piece of paper and hold it between the I.D. and O.D. covering the top portion of the work piece and the chuck. Also look at the right side of the chuck, with or without the piece of paper. Now that I am looking at it again, it appears that the chuck is not quite centered. :

You got good eyes, and you are right. The chuck was not quite centered. I have read your comment on mini collets too.

Nice bar but the wrong insert for your flat pocket. You can improve the finish and cut by using an insert that has a clearance angle built in. Stop your video and 10:35 and you'll see your insert has no angle--It just drops straight down. It's probably rubbing at the bottom. Keep the bar but change the insert.
@tompas11A3n52KkX
@tompas11A3n52KkX 6 років тому
I'm using this insert: TCMT 090202-MF 1025 and it has a 7 deg clearance angle. www.sandvik.coromant.com/en-gb/products/Pages/productdetails.aspx?c=tcmt%201.8(1.5)0-mf%201025 Sometimes the camera angle can fool you.

Make a boring bar 1. paint all the walls the same color white 2. no music 3. only one beer on tap 4. no tv's 5. all bar and waitstaff must wear the same green polo and khaki pants 6. no food

Yeah make a boring bar the way you want it. Yeah the walls are white, not black. Yeah no music when I'm working - disturbing, the machine produces the music. No beer on tap only malt whisky, you know only the best is good enough. No Tv's thats right I never watch tv to much sport. No no green polos and khaki pants only long pants and a checkered shirt. No food? Quee? Of course there will be lots of food and mostly meat with some beer to drink and maybe a cigar afterwards. Ahh i love it...
