**To answer a frequently asked question about this video: the texture is created by sandblasting. Unfortunately, the footage I recorded of this process was corrupted and I was unable to use it for this video. If you would like to see how I sandblast, you can see it in these two videos:
• How to Make a Billiard...
• Sandblasting -- Beginn...
This video demonstrates the steps taken to create a freehand pipe--from start to finish. In the past, I've shown how to make a billiard pipe, which is made in the tradition that uses a lathe to turn the primary form of the shape and to align and machine the holes. Freehand pipes do not rely on the precision of machinery to achieve symmetry (or asymmetry if that is the aim), instead requiring a trained eye and refined hand-shaping techniques to render the desired result.
In this video, you'll see me begin with the raw briar block, sketch a shape on it based on the natural pattern of grain within it, and then shape, refine, and polish the materials.
I've had a long of questions about some of the tools you see in the video. Here are some purchase links for some of them:
Machinery Recommendations (not exactly the same as mine, but good quality and can be used for pipemaking):
10x22 Metalworking Lathe: amzn.to/3Pxwmzo
Quick Change Tool Post & Holders: amzn.to/3B4r0r9
The Smallest Bandsaw I'd recommend for cutting briar: amzn.to/3yR734F
A much better Bandsaw equivalent to the one in my videos: amzn.to/3IT8J1V
Sanding and Buffing Arbor System: amzn.to/3B3H4cR
7" Shaping Disk Backing plate: amzn.to/3PqR5Fm
7" 36gr Grinding Disks: amzn.to/3oicLrb
Rough File Used to Shape Mouthpiece: amzn.to/3aWbYcn
Fine File Used on Mouthpiece: amzn.to/3OkC2vG

Every year as a child I went to a smoke shop in the mall in Kansas City. I loved walking in the humidor and smelling all the tobacco mixing in the air. My father and I would pick out a pipe for my grandfather for Christmas as a present for him till the day he stopped smoking pipe. This brings back a lot of memories and some tears when I saw this pipe. I miss them all. Great work Sir. You have a great talent.

Yes, I am a Kansas City native and I believe I know the pipe shop you are referencing. It is probably Diebel's Pipes on the Plaza! Then he opened a couple more locations. One at Metcalf Mall in the 1970s. The other possibility would be a shop called the Tinder Box. Fred Diebel's shop was considered the finest in the midwest; he even had a tobacconist who developed and made fine mixtures for their customers! I spent a lot of time and perhaps too much money on my pipe collection. It spanned from the very early 1970s thru the late 1990s. Then it was time to stop and find new homes for my nice collection of pipes.

Now I feel so old (53), going back to when I was way before my pre-teens with my father to that store. I can still remember the smells. Locked into my brain like a steel trap. This is wonderful. I started my woodworking journey by making a few pipes about 8 years ago, and I obsessively devoured any pipe making info I could, including some of your older videos and the forums of course. I have since moved over to heirloom quality fine furniture. Some days I think about returning to my roots and making some more pipes, but man is it meticulous work. My experience at least gave me the ability to appreciate what the full time pipe makers like you are doing.

Perfect job there well-done nothing like handmade, that was my first job after school in 1960 in London and for a while full-time. I see some different methods are used to what I was taught, for instance bending the stem it was done over a lighted candle and held in place and dipped in cold water until set. Also the staining of the bowl we used a mixture of whatever colour chosen and methylated spirits, used to dip the bowl in the mixture and burn it off over a candle. Then hung upside down on a wooden block with nails in to dry. There are many modern improvement's for the good to what I was used to compared to the way we did it all those years ago. I didn't get to go through all the processes though, just what was mentioned plus buffing all grades and polishing. The best part was the buffing after the staining bring out the grain in the briar it was very satisfying, anyway keep up the good work bye for now

Amazed at your craftsmanship, but not used to seeing a pipe with such a small stem, but amazing none the less
