Making a Gull Wing Style PVC Bow in Under 20 Minutes at the Sammamish Knapp In

I was at the Sammamish Knapp In last week and ended up filming a couple of videos with Barry Bonnell. Somebody asked me what the fastest PVC bow to make with decent performance was, so I decided to make a gull wing bow.
It's a very simple bow, based on reflexed bows of several Native American bow designs. It took around 17 minutes to build. With a powered saw and less distractions, a similar bow could probably be built in about 15.
Thanks for watching and enjoy!

Heya. I wanted to say that your videos on bow making and arrows believe it or not has made a HUGE improvement in my dad`s health and his outlook on life. My dad was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago. With 46 rounds of chemo he was getting deathly depressed and his health & will to live almost gone. I bought some pvc and thru your videos was able to make a very nice bow..I thought it was cool! My God Im in tears as im typing this. Strangely enough your videos brought my dad back from the edge!!!!!Now he makes bow & arrows all day long Instead of staying in bed without hope. He has a friend of his who owns a turkey farm gave him 3 big black garbage bags full of feathers and a month later even more. He is good at making arrows too. From my heart and soul I just cant thank you enough! You were and are still a hero to our family who unknowingly saved my dad/best friend just from making awesome videos. I was with him when he found his first arrowhead, he was so excited!...He only has a few months left...he knows...from 235 lbs to 168 lbs ...he was 178 lbs one month ago. With dad, my sister, my mom, and 8 aunts/uncles either died from cancer or in remission within the last 8 years. I apologize for rambling.

You're killing me...Haven't shot my $$$ compound Hoyt in years for lots of reasons and want to return to simpler archery...and you are continually showing me how inexpensively I can get back to sticks & strings...Thank you (I think) for putting these up...Workmanship and creativity are through the roof and every presentation brings a smile to my face (as well as a kick to my pants to gitter' done). My pvc pipe inventory is about to be transformed or is it "twang-formed"!

It feels pretty good, not slow, don't know what you mean by stacky, but works pretty well, the drawback isn't the smoothest but it's decent, fairly accurate as well. It was my second attempt so I would suggest trying again.

I made it as my first PVC bow, it took me about 2 hours to do the heat right but I'm still impressed by it. I used a stove top to heat and used two simple 0.7 x 0.15 meter wooden blocks. It's kind of challenging when trying to make it flatt without it getting crooked. Would like to make more, any tips on making it easier and faster?

I was able to make this but was also able to increase poundage to around 45 lbs at 28 inches. Only thing different was filling the PVC pipe with Great Stuff gap filler insulation foam through a hole I drilled in the handle that I later closed up with jb weld. Give it a shot, I only recently tried it but it looks promising.

What's up Nick! I love your videos. I have a question about the 80lb bow you made a video for a while back(its the only flattened design I've made so far) I was wondering if instead of cutting the "V" shape out of the tips, heating, and bending to make them tapered, I could simply cut the style of nocks you used on this bow, and if you would suggest it.
@glassroboto
@glassroboto 8 років тому
Hi Nick, great work as always! The speed you created this bow is absolutely amazing to me. I mean, I understand it's not the most complex design and you didn't decorate it or give it any kind of finishing touches, but still. A 35# bow in 17 minutes (and you weren't even rushing) is pretty damn cool! Would this exact bow last just as long as your other pvc bows, and is it as enjoyable to shoot as the others? Been meaning to go hang out with Greywolf and give making something like this a try!

I have made the 3/4" pvc fiberglass longbow as a 1st run, the recurve as a 2nd bow with 1" and also the gull wing at 56".. Fiberglass no heat and recurve sling arrows good at maybe 10 yards but out to 15-20yds the fiberglass core arrows have a big drop.. The recurve 1" slings em on point from beyond.. I made a 1" gull wing style as shown in the video and the draw seems in the middle. Brace height is about 5" from string to bow.. Usually low brace height gives me wrist string slap.. Wonderin if i need to make a shorter string to raise brace height on my gull wing..

Thanks for watching! With a 1" pipe, a bow like this will draw around 50 pounds at 24 inches and anywhere from 60 to 80 pounds at 28 inches depending on how badly it stacks. So it is a bit heavy and short! The draw weight is around 35 pounds at 28 inches with 3/4" pipe. If you want to try using 1" pipe, 55-60 inches is pretty much the ideal range. Hope this helps! -Nick

There's really no point in using fiberglass rods in this style of bow. If you did use fiberglass rods, it would be to bring up draw weight (but they tend to bring down relative speed) and works better with larger and longer pipe. A bow like this will usually be faster than a bow with fiberglass rods of the same weight. Hope this helps!

I'm fascinated by this but have a few questions: 1) I'm guessing that the draw-weight is fairly minimal, 20lbs or so? 2) Does the bow take a "set"? 3) Schedule 40? 4) Does heavier pipe make for a stronger bow? Thanks!
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 8 років тому
+Bill Weissborn The draw weight is 35# at 28". The bow does take set but it keeps its reflex, there is no string follow. It is schedule 40, and yes a bigger pipe makes a stronger bow. A 1" pipe at around 55" long will yield around 50 pounds in this same style.
@usarmyfl1
@usarmyfl1 8 років тому
+BackyardBowyer I just made this bow today with 1" Sch40 and it turned out well. But I think my bow string is a tad bit short. With the bow unstrung, how long should the string be? I think I saw from one of your other videos that it should be about 5-6 inches shorter than the bow itself? Or should I say the nocks. Thanks. And love the channel/videos.
