How many of you made it all the way the the end?

Speaking as someone who operated pools for 10 years: To winterize: You want to drain the pipes, add antifreeze, and seal them. Water freezing will expand and crack them. However, DO NOT drain the pool! The change of pressure of filled/not filled over a season will actually crack the concrete of your walls. Water in the earth freezes and expands, and you need the pressure of the water to push back. That's an oversimplified explanation but you get the gist. I'd also recommend getting some sort of cover. Since this is custom, you'll likely have to make something custom fit. A sheet with stretchy loops, then some sturdy poles buried underground with hooks on top. Bury them so the hooks are barely visible and don't disrupt your aesthetic too much when in use. It goes a long way to keeping it clean so there less work getting it ready again for when you open it again. Otherwise leaves and other debris will get in and rot all winter. It is disgusting to clean it. Also, just throw in some chlorine tabs and possibly some algae-cide from time to time. Also, consult with a local pool company. The natural water of an area differs from region to region and you may need additional treatment. (for example where I live, the natural calcium of water is very low and we have to add more to avoid the water eroding it from the concrete. Other areas have too much and crusty calcium deposits start to form) The cover and chemicals will save you a lot of work reopening it. Otherwise the water will get very nasty and you will spend much more time cleaning it when you reopen it. You should still drain, clean, and refill it with fresh water when you reopen it.

I am Perry and I install swimming pools here in North Dakota your best option will be to drain the pool blowout all the pipes and run some antifreeze through them so they don’t freeze and crack draining the hot tub will allow you to clean it up come spring and to put some water new freshwater inside also I really enjoy watching your videos you have been giving me so many building ideas so far thanks keep doing what you are doing

Hey Drew I'm a swimming pool contractor in Florida, as far as how to winterize your Homemade spa you definitely want to drain it. Unless you're going to heat it all winter because you did not waterproof the walls of the spa as you stated water will get behind them and for sure freeze and break the walls and seats and floor. There will also be some difficulties to overcome due to the exposed Pea gravel and voids in the rocks This will allow algae and bacteria to fester With no way to clean it. I know what you're thinking the chlorine will just kill it but that's not exactly true to keep levels within range for use there will be a gradient of sanitary water to water that is stagnant and filled with bacteria. this will cause you to have a constant battle with Staphylococcus cytoplasm and other various bacterial growths. My recommendation is every couple of weeks to bring the Spa to 50 parts per million chlorine to kill any bacteria before use skipping this step will result in hot tub rash hot tub lung and other infections. This project came out beautifully But it was definitely not built to code I don't expect this hot tub to last for more than five to 10 years😃

can we see a "later" video. How did the plants do? What did you decide to do for winter? How much maintenance did the pool need (clearing tree needles, chemicals) How did you parents keep up with the wood?

I realized less than 5 minutes into this video I could never put myself through all of that work. I did however watch until the end. Your ingenuity, work ethic, and desire to build something amazing for your parents to enjoy is truly admirable. Incredible job!

Gorgeous. Made a pond from the ground up with my dad when i was younger using rocks from our farm to surround it and make a waterfall. That was a lot of work. This is insane. Love it!

It’s my first time watching one of your videos and boy was I impressed. For someone who’s never built a hot tub before that’s the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen! Wow! All the little touches, the mister, the lighting so many extras, you thought of everything. As an old person I might like the option of a gas water heater that I can turn on remotely so everything will be warm and cozy when I come out on a chilly night. Saying that, it’s perfect. Living in Southern California I pictured you going out there in the snow. I guess that’s not practical in your area. I didn’t know that the freezing temperatures would ruin the pipes.

If you do this yourself. One tip I have from building water features over the past twenty years is buy extra underlayment. Cut pieces of it and place them on the pond liner and under the boulders to prevent puncturing the liner. Double them or triple the pieces if you need to but PROTECT the liner!! That is all. Great build!

Made it to the end. As for wintering it up, I think it may be easier to drain it fully and cover it with a tent or tarp just to make spring time restart less hassle of fishing out any dropped foliage. Although, if you keep a low fire going in the heater. Stretch a large-ish canopy or frame wall tent over it so you could have a middle of Canadian winter personal hot spring to relax in while there's a foot or more of snow on the ground. If you're thinking about doing that in particular, you might want to take up some of the mulch and dirt to line with landscape felt then cover with a good five inches of river gravel to be the dressing and drying off area. The heat from the water would warm the temporary shelter space. So that space may evolve into a family gathering in winter to cook on a grill, enjoy a warm soak while everyone else is hemmed up in their houses.

This build was absolutely unreal! Your parents, nieces, nephews and entire family will enjoy it for years. You use meticulous and painstaking detail in each build. Thank you for sharing this with us.

The unique shape and contorus would be difficult to cover effectively, and the small amount of water isn't worth working hard to clean next year. Drain it, blow out the pipes and plug. The pumps and filter should be fine to overwinter in place, as long as they're empty of water. Avoid leaving a filter cartridge/element in the filter body all winter though; if reusable, store it dry and indoors, otherwise discard and replace next year. Get a float actuated submersible pump and a short hose and set it up in the lowest area of the bottom to keep it mostly clean and free of water until you're ready to clean and refill next year.

This was an incredibly inspiring build to watch. Though if I spent that much money, I’d want it to be at least 104-106 degrees! Also, being able to use it in the winter is an absolute must! Enjoy.

I really enjoyed watching the build and seeing the finished product. At night with the lights on and the fog/mist really looks cool. After reading through some comments from "professionals", about how difficult to clean and water behind the walls & freezing etc.. I would be kicking myself on not being able to plan far enough ahead to properly clean it or about water freezing behind the walls and it making everyone sick or being destroyed within a couple years with all the money & time that went into building it. I'd be wanting to keep it heated full time. Definately something to be proud of. Nice build.

Drew, first of all, that was incredible. An absolutely huge accomplishment that would intimidate 99.9% of people. I have to say that the winter is absolutely the best time of year to enjoy your awesome creation. My wife and I live in northern MI. and we probably use our hot tub 6-10 times from May-Oct. it is used approximately 70-100 times from Nov.- April. You would need to install an additional heat source of course. Awesome job that turned out absolutely stunning.

I've been to several natural hot springs in my life, and none of them ever looked this clean! Mostly mud bottoms and weird floating algae bits. Kudos for so much work, but I hope it never needs to be removed.
