I'm not the best at modeling, but something I'd do for couches is to bevel the pillows' edges and then extrude the beveled crease out just enough to get the pronounced seams, from there you can subdivide to smooth it and it makes the other parts feel nice and tight without needing to overcomplicate things. I've yet to come up with a better tactic, this one certainly isn't the best possible, but I'd hope someone else can do it better.

I think the night one is better. The day one sort of looks like it's underground or something, because of the lack of different light sources. It just feels too dark. I think there should be more spilled light from outside on the stairs, inside the opened door etc. as if there is multiple windows in the house instead of just few in the actual modeled room

Every time I watch a video on this channel, I feel inspired to learn more about Blender. I love working with Blender and creating 3D models, but sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the amount of information out there. It's like I'm facing a huge mountain, and every time I try to climb it, the mountain gets bigger and bigger, and the top seems farther and farther away. I start to question whether or not I really want to learn Blender. Then I come across a video on this channel, and it reignites my passion for learning.
@iaadsi
@iaadsi 6 місяців тому
I realized I don't have to climb all the way to the top. I'm a few hours up the mountain, even though I'm nowhere near the peak the view I get is already pretty spectacular! Shitty analogy aside, with an all-encompassing ecosystem like Blender it's rare to learn and know *all*. Specialize, learn a small self-contained portion well (e.g. just hard surface modeling, or just lighting in eevee, etc.), and then branch from there if you like.
@NotSoMuchFrankly
@NotSoMuchFrankly 6 місяців тому
I see channel experts more often recommending buying add-ons and models to save time (though some are free). It may cost money but it gets you closer to drag-n-drop ease for creating scenes. You save time and frustration if you can stay inspired to go for a _final_ render. Learning Blender front to back is just daunting so I feel ya'.

I agree, I have been learning Blender now since beginning of September. I started with his donut tutorials and they are great. The geo nodes make my head spin, the things that can be done with them and how little I understand them make it like magical spell.
@jeffersonadams8711
@jeffersonadams8711 6 місяців тому
Agree with you, yazan. I got into Blender back in February using Andrew's donut tutorial. Then I moved on to his chair and anvil tutorials, and then made a bedside table by myself. Using what I learned in all those, I tried to make a "hotel room" from scratch back in April, and that was when I burned out. Haven't touched Blender since, though I miss it dearly. I'm just trying to find something to re-inspire me. I wish Andrew would bless us with a new tutorial...though perhaps he's waiting for version 4?
@karagosi
@karagosi 4 місяці тому
You don't have to climb it to the top, all you need is to know what you want to do, if you just need maybe create your animation start by modelling your character then model or gather the assets that you will need in the run (be specific), keep on the track and don't be intimated by the work of others, DONT TRY TO DO ANYTHING OR EVERYTHING IN BLENDER YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

that was honestly so entertaining watching how you went about creating this. The one thing I noticed with the character creator models is the uncanny valley feeling imo kind of came from how they appeared to look more like wax figures from something like Mdme Toussauds. Perhpas no subsurf scattering on the skin? Can't really tell though. Amazing scene in any case, lots of super handy tips and tricks for modelling too.

its not about characters, its about the room as well, room feels unrealistic so everything look like toy story 4, and the denoising killed the texture details, I cant see any texture details in this video, everything look toyish not just characters, the wood doesnt feel wood and nothing almost look realistic although pathtracer is being used, even games with rasterizer looks more realistic.

To solve the issue of your uncanny valley situation with the character, you actually do have to model them in a cartoonish way to match the cartoon, like you have with everything else. It needs consistency, but then you can use realistic textures on the character to match your environment. With the realistic lighting, but obviously basic looking scene and character, it will come together nicely as all the textures are consistent too. They're realistic but quite plain. So your character needs to match this

He’s done realistic interiors before that are much better than this. I like Andrew but the final render is lazy and sub par. Seriously go look at his other interior videos. They are great. Also I resent the insinuation that you have to do something to critique it. That’s such an immature way to look at things. I can look at books, art, movies etc and form an opinion but I don’t make any of them. I think you might have a parasocial with Andrew which is weird and creepy. I had some good luck creating those foam cushions by modeling the internal foam shape and then just using cloth shrinking factor to essentially shrinkwrap that with the actual cushion mesh. You can (and probably should) add extra tension creases with sculpting or normal maps though, so it's not a totally one-and-done technique.

This is a lot of fun, inspires me to try to recreate a living room from a different show like Spongebob or Rick and Morty or something. I wish you could post more often, you always have awesome content, but I also understand you've already shared a wealth of information and are also busy with Polygon and other things. If you need video ideas, I'd love to see a series talking about the processes you guys use at polygon for your assets. They're all super nice quality and I'm always impressed. Obviously you don't have to give away all your secrets, but I just wonder what your process is for capturing or generating high quality textures, getting clean photoscans, capturing your own surface imperfections, and maybe even how you guys make HDRIs. I know you've made a couple videos about some of these things in the past, but it'd be cool to see the workflows now that you've had a few years with your own asset company, perfecting that process.
