Makes sense, half if not the vast majority of the people subscribed likely don’t even have a Steam Deck or other stuff like it and instead just watch the channel for the sake of watching cool tech videos, like how most of the Binging with Babish watchers watch his cooking vids while eating old take-out. So it’s not unlikely that most of these people are suggesting awful ideas simply because they don’t have a Steam deck to confirm that no, it is genuinely not a good idea and the source they got it from was idiotic.

Touch pads aren't useless. Outside of the usefulness for it in games that are more mouse based, as well as FPS games for more mouse-like accuracy without Gyro, both are extremely useful for emulator options while you're in-game, and make desktop mode not suck as much if using it purely as a handheld

@@user-s8jb3qb6yeven if you seriously just *cannot* get used to them while gaming (like me), they are still *incredibly* useful in desktop mode. That control, in itself, is so very important for a handheld PC. I can’t see *anybody* choosing *not* to use them in favour of the joystick’s when browsing/using desktop mode. The steam deck’s ease of use just obliterates the competition right now, at least in *my* testing w/ the ally, ayaneo air and aokzoe. And again, I don’t even use the touch-pads for gaming…

Touchpads are what made me go steam deck over the ally. The fact that it enables whole bunch of other games that wont have native controller support and makes navigation a breeze. Its what honestly what most of these other handhelds lack. Plus having it as a item menu from 1-9 or like a radial menu is insanely useful. I think the trackpad is the best thing about the Steam Deck. And i wish every other controller had it too.

@scenenuf

You can literally just get a matt finish screen protector. Probably ones out there that are better than the etched glass anyway, and much cheaper, and not risky to install. The left touchpad works like a dpad in the ui. Pushing down on the top/left/bottom/right of the touchpad is what your supposed to do in the menu. I would guess what's happening while your swiping is sometimes you push one side of the pad down while swiping. The touchpads are really useful for games that don't have gamepad support. I would recommend trying something like roller coaster tycoon 2 or an rts game with the touchpads.
@Moskeeto
@Moskeeto 10 місяців тому
The trackpads are extremely useful provided you know how to customize them. I use them for virtual menus in emulators or games with extra keyboard commands that a standard gamepad can't use. Also, the reason the left trackpad wasn't working consistently in the main menu is because it's not set to swipe gestures for navigating. It's set to dpad mode which means you click down in the direction you want to navigate. Your swiping was sometimes putting enough pressure to activate it.

Having everything done does look pretty awesome. I did the SSD on mine as soon as I got my steam deck (got the 64GB model, so that was the plan going in). I do have the gullikit hall sense sticks, but they've been sitting in the box. If and when I get drift I'll go ahead and do that. For the case, I've seen a few videos now and EVERYONE said it was a pain. I think what I would do though is swap the back cover and get some matching buttons to swap in which should look pretty good and be reasonable enough to do.

About thumbsticks - this operation has a reason to do even if you have perfectly working sticks. You can remove dead zones for them at all and they’ll not drift. It gives bit more room for movement and gives bit more precision. Felt pretty nice when I played Mechwarrior 5 - additional precision allowed to perfectly center torso way easier, so it was “measurable” result

@Nova2127U
@Nova2127U 10 місяців тому
@@tomoprime217 Yes, recovery is bootable without anything on the SSD, The entire process can be done without a USB stick, only thing you need is a MicroSD card and "possibly" a SD card reader if you're computer doesn't have one. Valve recommends atleast 8 GB minimum of space for the recovery image, so anything higher than that should be good, and then once SteamOS is back on the SSD, you can reformat the SD for actual storage.

Id love for him to make a video on it. I love the touchpads but either a "i was wrong" style turnaround on them, or "i was right" type video would both be fun watches. I want him to really try them tho.

Lol Bob yelling at himself to wake up genuinely caught me off guard. The vibe in the videos has always one that is laid back/relaxed. He did a good job with the ad skit though.

I got my Steam Deck on Saturday and a 2TB SSD from Sabrent ready to go. The first thing I did was upgrade the SSD the moment the Steam Deck was delivered. I really love the Steam Deck. I was debating or trying to justify owning one, but now I don't care. I love it.

Great video as I have to switch out the screen this week (dropped the damn thing and it landed screen first on the foot of my gamingchair). At least upgrading the SSD to the 2TB Version (especially doing so almost directly after getting it) was fairly easy as I didn't need the data on the drive and just reinstalled it. Replacing the backplate with a JSAUX one was also kinda easy (it's ONLY the Back, not front after all as they didn't have FRONTplates at the time anyway) and my 1TB SDcard works fine. The SteamDeck in Black/Green looks awesome and I've got a LOT of space for games now so I just have to fix the broken screen... at least I don't have to be careful removing the old one

Man Bob you crazy. The track has are the greatest thing about the steam deck and the one thing all the other handheld PCS are forgetting about. All those old games like Warcraft 2 or 3 and Dawn of War and battlefleet Gothic, that one's not really old, but all these old ass games that are really hard to do with a controller especially RTS games, the track pads come in clutch. The track pads are just amazing things that need the mouse and they're so versatile and you can even set them up to be several buttons. So games that use a shit ton of buttons and you don't have enough on the controller, you can set up a little wheel on one of the touch pads that will be several of the buttons you need

Nice video! I swapped my 64gb drive for a 512GB before I even powered it on, pretty easy upgrade, the OS install was a little tedious as I didn't have a flash drive handy, but its been a fun little machine.

Transparent shells are cool and all, but the steam decks shell is so satisfying to hold in that texture is just so great that I can't imagine wanting to change it. I put a spin on mine and I'm already starting to regret it because of how smooth. It doesn't have that perfect grippy feel to it
@XionSteel
@XionSteel 10 місяців тому
huh... i always thought that little cubby in the back of the case was for the power brick so that's where i put it. Granted i got the most expensive version of the steam deck so mine came with a mesh case and it just forms it into the perfect shape to fit back there.

I got a 512GB Steam Deck from Kogan (Aussie importer-reseller of Steam Decks amongst other things), and since I got my Logitech K840 keyboard and MX Ergo trackball the Deck is a beautiful little portable system whilst I'm unable to use my much beefier home PC's. Currently got a 128GB MicroSD in it, and when funds are a bit more free I'll be upgrading the Deck to a 2TB 2230 M.2 and 1TB MicroSD following the Clonezilla Drive Migration method as currently got a LOT of mods for Mass Effect Legendary Edition installed right now (along with the Persona games), and I have the stock MELE backups stored on the MicroSD to provide a smidge more room on the SSD.

For some reason when I swapped out the SSD I had a nightmare of a time trying to flash the OS onto it. Sincerely I had a really tough time with it and it had nothing to do with the physical swap but everything to do with trying to get the data onto a thumbdrive and train SSD with that specific operating system. At one point after three late nights of working on it it actually started to install the new OS automatically. It was as though I had a mystical non-physical helping hand at the end of my extremely difficult process. I'm definitely not new to tinkering and this SSD swap was completely beguiling befuddling and ridiculously difficult for no apparent reason.
@greenprotag
@greenprotag 10 місяців тому
I have done the SSD swap. I have a dual boot windows & steam OS set up. I thought about buying the sticks to put on a shelf. The shell mod I could talk myself into IF I had more money and I wanted to upgrade the screen. There are aftermarket screens for the deck and then you would not have to unglue the stock screen from the original shell.

Brilliant vid and love the humour.... sorry, humor ;) subbed. On the question of taking the whole SD apart, I think it would be a good idea to take a photo with your smartphone before doing anything. Would be a good thing when putting it back together. Oh and make sure you remove the MicroSD card before opening the SD. You could snap the bugger in half otherwise :)

I did the gulikit sticks about two weeks ago and while I had it open I replaced the thermal paste with ptm7950. Got about a 7 degree drop on temps. Lowered the joystick deadzones down to 3200. I'm more than happy with these mods, maybe I'll upgrade the ssd at some point. I focus on the games I'm playing not the look of the device.
@lolcat
@lolcat 10 місяців тому
the metal backed jsaux backplate drops temps too. takes heat from the internal shield but the external metal gets hot to compensate. I haven't had an extremely loud fan like I did before playing heavy games. docked and at max GPU+CPU using power tools i don't hear it much at all
@tonyh2596
@tonyh2596 10 місяців тому
@@lolcat I'm actually more interested in the new internal heatshield some people have started to receive on their new steam decks. Saw a couple posts on reddit. Looks like a bit thicker iodized plate. Think the jsaux backplate would probably perform even better with that new shield design.

15:15 when using the touch pad do you use it like a mouse or a D-pad? because when I'm navigating the steam menus I use it like a D-pad and I get to what I'm looking for just fine

Glad you've scared me off of the case mod. I've seen quite a few youtubers try it and they sometimes don't even note that there are very obvious alignment issues where they couldn't get the shell to close up afterwards. Btw did you see the kickstarter for a 1080p Steamdeck display 'upgrade' ? Sounds cool at first until you think about the extra stress on the gpu.

I'm excited to do the Gulikit mod. I'm waiting for my analog sticks to poop out to do that. For strange reasons, I'm not too interested in the SSD mod. I have 256GB and after downloading a bunch of games, emus, roms and plug-ins, it just felt cluttered to the point that I avoided my SD.. Now I keep three - five games at a time and I'm much happier.
