Malachi (18) is from New York. He's a talented athlete with a bright future in American Football. But last year, he developed Depersonalization Disorder after a severe panic attack. He struggled with it for some time but has thankfully since made a complete recovery.
As Malachi wrote to me in a recent email: "Because of your DP Manual, my life has went back to normal and I hardly even remember it ever happening."
And he's with us today to tell us about his experience with and recovery from Depersonalization Disorder!

When DP first started for me my husband had just died and Covid started.. I was going round and round in my head about the future.. I needed major dental work, I was embarrassed for anyone to see me but I kept thinking I was on my own now and had to go out into the world. The periods of “being outside my” actually helped me get across the country for dental implants. I remember thinking whatever this is it is just helping me through this time and will disappear when I get it all together. The terrifying part was when I got back and there was nothing stopping me from going out the curtain around my mind hit full time. I went for therapy,medical appointments and talked to everyone I knew but nothing helped..until I googled what I was experiencing and found the DP manual. I want everyone to know the reason you are feeling this doesn’t matter..try and continue living your life not concentrating on the strange place your mind has gone..you will get better before you know 💛

Totally true, you get rid of it! You have to understand that dp/anxiety is a normal reaction but it keeps despite of time because you are obsess over it and is all you think about. It is as normal as going to the bathroom, you know if you eat something your body process it, if you don’t your body don’t process anything because you didn’t eat, the same happens with dpdr, if you care, if you obsess, if you fear your body will react the same way because it can’t make any difference between a real danger or just an stupid tought. Greetings from Argentina! I would like to give my recovery story (5 month)

You don’t need to “stop it”. The way out is to stop obessing over symptomes and also stop obsessing about that you are obsessing. Notice the thought pattern and interrupt it. Look outside, take a shower, take a deep breath, watch a funny video. Interrupt the pattern and let it go. You don’t need to solve it you need to stop focusing on it at all. It can be difficult at the beginning, I know that. But trust me, stick with it, it will get better. Everytime you catch yourself obsessing over symptomes, stop it, switch your focus.

Thanks for another vid👏 Ive been struggling with dp for a few months now, but i made a lot of progress since I found Shauns manual last week. I know now this is most likely the dp talking, but even though im starting to move away from the scary existential thoughts, I still feel constantly like: none of this makes sense. It cant be real. Floating on a rock in infinite space etcetera. That makes me worried, becaude it feels like my brain is starting to accept the nonsense thought that 'all of this is most likely not real' Also im a bit worried that - when it gets better - im not able to forget how 'not real' everything felt, and that my brain cant go back to accepting that everything in fact is very real. Does this sounds familier for anybody?

I had smoked weed in the fall of 2019 with my friend. It was his first time and he started to freak out so naturally I did as well and I was just trying to keep him relaxed. I remember he started to breathe very heavily and start panicking and that’s when I went “oh fuck” in my own head. I also freaked out and was trying very hard to keep my shit together and help him out. The next day I felt weird and he did too. I thought that it was just a “weed hangover” and I’d be back to normal. But then a few days went by and I continued feeling weird and didn’t know what was wrong and immediately started thinking that I fried my brain or something. I never really talked to him too much about it mostly because I was scared too. But it sounded like he was back to normal after a few weeks or maybe a month I can’t remember. But I continued feeling weird and now it’s almost been 4.5 years since that happened and I still feel messed up. It’s only visual for me as in if I’m outside looking around something just seems off. I can’t really explain it. When I go to the grocery store everything just seems wacky in my vision. I’d say it’s almost like I have a wide view looking through a magnifying glass almost. That right there doesn’t quite describe it but it’s the best way I can describe it. Any way for a long time I just accepted that I fried my brain and this is how it will be for the rest of my life. But I’ve been still doing research on it and I’m thinking it must be DP/DR. I’ve been trying to keep my mind off of it and let myself heal from it but it’s hard to do. I bought the DP/DR manual and I’m really hoping that it will work. It’s been way too long and I need to erase it from my mind.

💯 x💯 s/o Malachi the courage to open & share your experience bro. Hate to say it but not a lot representation or awareness, let on alone, any priority for mental health of black men in the US. But, iHope your testimony resonates to other brothers as it did for me. The world can be a little dismissive in general already, which begets neglect. The complacency. Eventually, shame because we view mental health issues as a sign of weakness. But, there’s strength in any numbers ✊🏾

Shaun is it normal to feel Deja vu
@Dpmanual
@Dpmanual 3 місяці тому
Don’t worry, feelings of Deja Vu are super common with DPDR. I know they can be frightening but they will fade away and stop as your recovery continues 😊 www.dpmanual.com/about/do-i-have-depersonalization-disorder/

I've had dp for few months and I'm currently recovering. The biggest thing for me is what caused it. I've never used any drugs or alcohol and I've never had panic attack. I don't remember any traumas that could affect me. Only thing I know is years ago I had few short moments with dp. So I have no idea about it

Check if you have ADHD. Sometimes ADHD could cause constant anxiety and overtime your body may end up with DP. It could also just be you are generally anxious and overtime your body viewed it as a significant threat to the point it engaged this defense mechanism known as do/dr

Don't worry Alex, DPDR isn't always caused by something as clear and obvious as a panic attack or trauma 😊 Read this carefully: www.dpmanual.com/articles/what-causes-depersonalization-disorder/

Read these articles carefully: www.dpmanual.com/articles/schizophrenia_cancer_depersonalization/ www.dpmanual.com/articles/depersonalization-three-reasons-youre-not-going-crazy-2/ And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR.
