Maps I find Surprising! Check out my other UKposts channels below! @JackSucksAtLife @JackSucksAtStuff @JackMasseyWelsh @JackSucksAtClips @nocontext @GeogStuff
on JackSucksAtGeography we upload a range of easy to watch & sometimes educational geography related content. I have successfully learned all 197 countries and flags of the world. I also look at interesting maps to teach us more about different parts of the world and their culture. On this channel I also play Geoguessr.

The desert in Namibia, Botswana, Angola and South Africa is the Kalahari desert and is the second biggest desert in Africa, Jack. It's also sometimes called the desert that is not a desert because many areas are full of extremely hardy and drought resistant trees, bushes and grasses. Although 7.2M may not seem like so much for Alaska's land mass and resources I have two reasons, 1; The Russians could not find any good use for alaska so they were looking to sell it as if it were a unworthy piece of land (when later lots of good resources were found), and 2; 7.2 Million back then is about 146.8 Million dollars now
@nanoCB
@nanoCB Рік тому
The reason the US wanted Alaska was because of its abundance of oil (of course). But many people were indeed not happy about the purchase, which was made by the US treasurer. That's why Alaska is sometimes called "Seward's Folly". 7.2M in 1867 is worth 215M today.

There was hardly any oil industry at that time, and no way imaginable for Alaskan oil, which they didn't even suspect existed, to be transported out of Alaska. . They mainly considered Alaska to be a way-point for US trade with Asia. A few saw value in its forests and animal products - fish and furs. But primarily it was to block British expansion. Russia hated the UK and knew it couldn't defend Alaska if Britain tried to take it. Both the US and Russia were interested in surrounding British Columbia with US-controlled territory to limit British expansion.

The US wanted it for gold (saw the potential) furs, and fish. It also made a good area for trade with Russia and China. Russia was eager to sell because they knew if the UK wanted it, it would be difficult to defend. The detractors called it Seward’s Folly, though most people were for it. Once gold was found 20 or so years later it shut the detractors down for good.

I doubt you'll see this but fun fact about the US buying Alaska. People largely believed it to be a mistake to buy it and called the decision Seward's Folly. The price came out to around 2 cents an acre, and at the time the land wasn't considered to be useful enough to spend that on it in the 1860s. It was largely purchased out of a desire to remove Russia from North America, but then they found the oil up there.
