Brené Brown: How to “Brave the Wilderness” & Find True Belonging

True belonging is SO much more than “fitting in.” In this episode, Marie joins cultural icon Brené Brown in Texas to talk about her book “Braving the Wilderness.” Brené explains how to balance our need for individuality and standing out with our innate need for social acceptance. Plus, she breaks down the seven elements of trust, why shame never leads to a productive conversation, and why Brené doesn’t wear a suit - or watch her language - when she speaks to organizations. #MarieTVInterviews #BreneBrown #BRAVING
Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor, storyteller, and best-selling author. Her TED Talk on vulnerability is one of the top five most viewed TED Talks in the world with over 50 million views. She’s spent decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy, and is the author of several #1 New York Times bestsellers, including “The Gifts of Imperfection,” “Daring Greatly,” “Rising Strong,” “Braving the Wilderness,” and “Dare to Lead.” Brené is the founder and CEO of Brave Leaders, Inc., an organization that brings evidence-based courage-building programs to teams, leaders, entrepreneurs, and culture shifters.

I have Borderline Personality Disorder. The hardest part of for me it isn't the poor emotional regulation or even unstable relationships; those are painful, of course, and have affected my life and the lives of those I've loved in lasting ways. It's the unstable sense of self. Having been dehumanized, I haven't been able to agree with the expression "Wherever you go, there you are!" Wherever I go, I'm whomever the people I find there need me to be, which may differ from whom they want me to be, which has no relationship with who I am. I'm 56 years old as of this moment, and have almost no idea who I am - a wilderness, indeed, about which I often feel bewildered. I'm grateful to Brené for giving me a compass to help me find my way.

Tamara, look at you and all that courage! My daughter is diagnosed with Borderline pd. So did my dad and sister when they were alive. I wish I could've understood my dad and sis better when they were alive. I didn't see the trauma side of it, how they had been hurt only my frustration and anger when I felt they were being difficult. I'm glad to have a better chance with my daughter, who is an adult with a child of her own. I guess I'm not entirely sure what I want to say except people like Brene Brown help with the excellent and courageous work they do and you help by demonstrating that it's okay to talk about. It's important to yourself and others to admit and talk about. Together we can blow shame out of the water and move towards healing. Thank you. Sending love.
@inspiredclarity2014

Tamara, another quick comment/question: have you looked into learning about fragmentation and/or shadow work and/or integration? These may help point toward what you might be rejecting about yourself so you can learn to accept and heal those parts and be more authentically who you are. I like Teal Swan's work. She has a ton of content on UKposts. I'd start by listening to her personal story of her childhood and teen years. She's so beautiful and confident you would never guess how far she's come. To me it shows we can heal more than we could imagine. Take care, Margie

I love Brené Brown. Every time I listen to her I learn something valuable. The lessons are all at once simple and profound and always life changing when embraced. Today the Break down of trust was huge. Some people close to me have broken my trust and I always struggled with why because it wasn't always huge, horrible, movie worthy events but I wanted nothing to do with them. I always had a sense of unease and defensiveness around them. Now I feel validated in my previously unexplainable feelings and the boundary to keep myself peaceful and safe feels easier to keep. Thank you for always being open, genuine and kind.

I love how she brought up that the dehumanizing concept goes both ways. I'm so worried about what I see happening in our culture today, how each side blames each other and how the supposedly compassionate, loving side has no problem in being hateful and punishing towards those they perceive as enemies. One of my favorite sayings is "Cuando apuntas con el dedo, tres apuntan hacia tí." "When you point a finger, three point back at you. We should always be vigilant of our self righteousness. Loved this talk. Cheers.

@chriscunningham8807

This is a major problem today when extreme left and extreme right clash with both claiming that they're simply protecting or promoting their cherished belief systems. Meanwhile people on the left, right and in the centre are blamed, misjudged, falsely accused and attacked with minimal hope of resolution. Walking the line between complicit silence or calling out crime and injustice while preserving respect, fairness and tolerance for the often demonised opponent is like walking the razor's edge. I fail abysmally when trying to navigate the potential landmines set by contemporary political correctness and the championing of minorities who sometimes feel entitled to react with disproportionate vitriol and self-righteous rage when they feel "offended."

Yes! I love the part about the dangers of dehumanization and how it corrodes moral obligation and goes against who we are as people. Might I humbly stand alone and suggest that the dehumanization of unborn children is chipping away at our society's soul? There is so much pain, regret, and loss for the dehumanized and the ones who practice it.

I loved this nugget of wisdom from this episode: "Our worth and our belonging are NOT negotiated with other people. We carry those inside of our hearts." I have lived the first thirty years of my life trying to belong by trying to be who they wanted me to be, including the Church I grew up in, my mother, my sisters, my father. I couldn't fit in for any of them. It was hell believing that I was not enough, that the reason I lost both of my girls to "family" people I couldn't fit into because I was unable to fit into the places that were "acceptable." Losing my girls to their fathers because I was an "unfit mother" broke me for many years. Hearing these words about worth and belonging are found within my heart was soothing. Thank you for for that.

Brene is one of my favourite people and favourite authors. She showed me through her teachings that I too could be braver and put myself out there and share what I have learned with the world through my own struggles by being vulnerable. It was because of people like Gabby, Glennon and Brene that I wrote my own book about shame and choosing to be who I am after my own personal struggles. So thank you Brene for sharing even more of your wisdom with us students of of life who want to continually learn more about this world around us and how to be better people in it.

Very thought provoking. My take-away is the "tool" of courage combined with self-check. Many speakers talk about just courage and "go for it" attitude, but that's not very realistic for most people. But when it's combined with "i see my vulnerability" "this is what makes me angry, i need to look into this" or "this is how i feel", it makes the decision making and process of approaching people more conscious and less stressful.

I've done OK at being brave in the wilderness my entire life. Won't bore you with the details, but I've definitely recognized my life as a wilderness and have felt that I was largely braving it alone. I now find myself challenged to stop insisting upon braving it alone and to instead let others in. I am learning about vulnerability - I've *felt* vulnerable, but I haven't *shown* that I'm vulnerable. I don't want to walk the entire trail alone anymore. Brene is teaching me how to create a new little side path that can hopefully someday become the place where I live.

Brene has a way of addressing the uncomfortable, putting it in perspective and making it simple to deal with. I just love listening to her; The questions and discussion were great and I thank you for posting this video.

"True belonging is a spiritual practice, and it's about the ability to find sacredness in both being a part of something but also the courage to stand alone". The world needs more Brenes, and I'm blessed to be alive in a time that her voice and messages impact me in such a deep healing way, in my own recovery and lifes challenges to show up & be in the arena. Thank you Marie and Brene.

Wow! First of all, I truly value both of you, the way you teach in such a relatable language. Then there's content... Brene, I am consistently moved by your words. This conversation had so many hot points. From dehumanizing people to shutting down the “Shamer's”, contribute more than criticize... it opened another level of awareness and perspective. The most impactful part of this video (tears flowing) was when you read the last paragraph of your book. As a 49 year old, still struggling artist who fights daily the stories in my head, scared and exhausted...I know now that I am the wilderness 🌿 THANK YOU beyond measure. Can't wait to read the book

The wilderness and wild... getting to a place of confidence and self-assurance has been one of the toughest terrains I have traveled. Standing alone is so painful and yet so rewarding in the end. It took the violent murder of my 26 year young grandson Zack, 18 months ago for me to truly understanding the life affirming practice of "I will not negotiate who I am." Thank you Brene (and Marie) for teaching and leading the way for me.

Hi Karen! We're so sorry to hear about Zack's passing 💗💗We know that grief never fully goes away. You absolutely do not have to negotiate who you are. You can absolutely be you. That's not always easy sometimes and we see your bravery and strength. - Monauar, Team Forleo

Yes to all of it. Yes to living and acting from love and not playing into the religious or political propaganda that operates from fear or shame. Yes to not minimizing my greatness for another's comfort. And hell yes to me dancing in the wilderness. There is something beautiful in knowing that I'm not alone, although I'll stand alone whenever I need to. Thank you for this. Thank you Marie. Thank you Brene. With love and gratitude, Maria Milagros

This is so beautiful, and I cannot express this enough. As a young MSW I am often shaken by the ugliness of the world. I spent most of my life living in very conservative South Texas and many times, this ugliness was the center of holiday get togethers and even nightly dinners. I cannot wait to read this book to get a better understanding of cultivating conversation and inviting others to experience this, along with kindness. This is the content of conversations that need to be had in every home, neighborhood, workplace and news station. Thank you both so much for this. I don't think the goosebumps from the powerful words will ever go away. I can't wait to see a world full of wilderness xoxo
