With 37 years military service, and 25 years federal law enforcement….this remains an anthem for those who suffer under oppression, those who resist it, those who fight to prevent it, certainly those who make the ultimate sacrifice, and those who stand and support them…..whether for country, principle, or life. And this live version pulls at the heart like no other.

@@AS-lk2vm. Only partly true, mi amigo. Not all the time, but yes, sometimes. But more often than not, my experience?…..it isn’t for money that men and women go forth under arms. Usually, it is for something far greater: principles like freedom, justice, or something else far greater than “profit”. And if you truly don’t understand that, I’m sorry for you. Still, I wish you only the best. Stay safe….and sleep well, friend. There are good men and women out there, in uniform, standing watch, to ensure that you can. And remember, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good men do nothing”.

Through some stressful events in my life…Lebanon ‘84, the Battery 9/11, SAR and body retrieval New Orleans post-Katrina, countless LE Ops…the music of PF was with me. As a musician, the hardest thing to do is to maintain your relationship with your songs. To remember what drove you to write it. And how we feel when it comes together. Music is how we remember our lives. The feelings that were so strong. But have faded. For me it's always a emotional revival. This ties us together.

This will be my reflection song during the showing of a life well lived when I'm dead. At almost 73 years of age and with a grandfather who served on the Somme in the Light Horse, my Dad in the RAAF and me missing the " American War, as the Vietnamese people correctly call it, by one day, I totally comprehend the futility of war. Just look at where the world is now. Enough said. So, as family and friends head for a wake to be long remembered, " Going Home " from Local Hero shall send them to craft beer, exceptional wines, non-alcoholic beverages if required and to finish off, a selection of exceptional single malts. I just wish I could be there. And to you Mark Knofler, what a wonderful legacy you have bestowed on people who appreciate, respect, and absorbe the brilliance of your special gift of composition and sharing. I took my oldest daughter, who is now 40, to see you at the Sydney Entertainment Centre before it's was redeveloped. A wee tear slid from my eye when you sang two of my three favourite compositions. Slainte.

I was very young when I often went fishing with my father. We drove to a beautiful spot outside the city we lived in. During the ride he played a mix-tape with songs of Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, Toto, Dire Straits, The Cure and Pink Floyd. I loved it, but as I child my mind could easily switch into other subjects. Years passed by, I got older and developed my own taste in music. Suddenly these artists and songs came back. We went fishing when I was 6 or 7. I got back to these songs when I was twenty or so. And now, at the age of 38, I listen to these songs over and over again. Thinking of those days. Of my father back then. Being there for me. Always. And he still is. Now I'm a father as well. Hopefully my kids will have the same memories when they are older. Memories about me. The current days. Their childhood. And the music they hear.

It's been relevant since for ever ... Since world has been waging wars. Including , Iraq , Syria, all the middle east killings , colonial and slave trade murders, civil wars etc. Feels especially poingnant now because it seem to be threatening the western economies and geographies after a very long time. Rest of the world has felt this way for ever.

Been listening to this song since mid80s when stationed in West Germany. Still brings tears to my eyes, especially knowing young kids are still being sent to die in foreign lands. When will it end? Thank you Mark for such a great song!

Unglaublich! Gänsehaut pur! Besser geht Gitarrenspiel nimmer mehr! Ausgesprochen höchstes Niveau! Und dazu diese unvergleichlich "rauchige" Stimme!!!☝☝☝

It couldn't be more appropriate, though I hope that will be a long time. This song is timeless because there will always be wars.

Just been crying on the phone with my dad. Man. God. I’m 50. He’s 73. He loves Comfortable Shoes. He a decent rhythm guitarist so am I but mark we watch you and think nah never in a million years of practice. We Rhythm guys. Back bone. But anyway. I remember 1985 Live aid I had my 3ltrs of Irn bru. Telly was mine for the day. 15. Wire trailing across the living room floor to tape it. Taped it on Betamax. And what did he do. He taped over it! Now we can relive it all. I’m a massive music fan and please kiddo. Never stop. And all those greats you love? Remember as daft as it seems prob to you. We think you are great. Thanks for the memories mark. Over the years I’ve leaned on u a bit. And your music has meant a lot.

At some point Mark's performance just made me stop and be entirely still and start filling up with deep sense of humanity, and some sadness, in other words, touched. Thank you
