On this episode of Martial Artists React, Noah and Gemma are taking a look at a bunch of different games, and more specifically their close-quarters combat animations. From the swordplay of the Assassin's Creed franchise to the military takedowns of Ghost Recon, those martial artists will analyze the forms, motion capture, and realism of those CQC fight scenes while sharing a few of their own martial art stories.
Which game has the most realistic takedowns? What was the martial art that they took inspiration from? And more importantly, according to Noah, what is the definition of sex-appeal? Time to find out!
The following gameplay is a compilation of clips from six video games, such as Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Watch Dogs: Legion, The Last of Us part 1 & 2, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Uncharted 4: A Thieve's End.

For any “choking enthusiasts” in the comments, here’s the deal: The trick to unconsciousness is the brain, and choking does this by depriving oxygen. In a regular choke attacking the windpipe, it could take up to two minutes before they drop. Oxygen is already in the bloodstream, and the body will shut down extremities (like the hands and legs) to keep the brain oxygenated. The real shit is the blood choke, which closes the artery in the neck feeding blood to the brain. If that artery is closed, it doesn’t matter how much oxygen is in your blood; there’s no way to replace what the brain spends. The brain will deoxygenate and knock the person out in 3-5 seconds.

Loved the reaction! As someone who trains regularly with real steel swords, it would be hard; depending on what kind of sword you were using. Despite what people think, a well-crafted steel sword can actually be wielded fairly efficiently one-handed, but it gets tiring pretty fast if you're not in peak condition. That said, if you know enough not to cut yourself, this kind of fighting can be incredibly deadly, as it allows you to both attack and defend with both hands, enabling you to menace your opponents from multiple directions.

Fighting with two swords? Terrible idea. Theoretically sound, practically useless. @@the_corvid97 they could fight for way longer than that, in fact roman legionaries wore their armour all day, only taking it off for maintenance, while bathing or to sleep and they trained with weapons and shields that were twice the weight of what they'd carry into battle, they also built roads, bridges and fortifications while in armour, they were conditioned for stamina. the reason why legionaries were able to rest mid battle was because their formations consisted of three shorter rows, as opposed to one long one, which allowed for the last row to rest, while the front row fought and the second row shielded them from above, the rows would cycle through on command simply because the second row couldn't hold their shields up forever. a knight would be a completely different story. knights and men at arms rode into battle on horseback and usually used lances or war hammers, swords were mainly used as a backup weapon, self defence tools while on the road, or in duels. also historical swords were much lighter than most people think and properly balanced, a good reproductions barely tires you out more than a fist fight.

That hand attack he is talking about is a vertical gunting :) The internal rotation of your torso muscles is one of the strongest muscle groups which significantly impacts the constriction on the airway and more importantly on the blood flow to the brain. You are cutting off Blood flow, not oxygen when you are conducting a proper chokehold. You are using your torso as a lever; Blood flow cut off from the brain takes 3-5 seconds of pressure before the person is out. Anatomy is super important when you learn martial arts =] got to understand how bones break, where they break, the amount of force required to break them, how joints articulate, how different ligaments and tendons affects muscle groups, how oxygen, blood, nutrients, and weather can significantly impact the outcome of the situation. You can do so much more once you take a holistic approach to this. Then you start to learn how to heal the body, and you begin to realize that you never ever want to hurt anyone. Instead, you allow the other person to assault and attack you. Because a single blow from a master is enough to kill someone, and with that responsibility. Only when your life is in absolute danger, or someones else is do you ever engage in self-defence. A story I was once told from one of my masters; An old man opens up a dojo in a village, and he invited people to come to his dojo. In this village, there was a gang of boys who thought they were tough. They heard about this and decided to teach this old man a lesson about who was tough. They went to his dojo, and they proceeded to attack him, they beat him and kicked him they attacked him over and over again, and yet he did not strike back. This infuriated the boys even more and they still continued to strike the master. Eventually, the boys stopped. And they asked the master why he did not defend himself. And he said because I was in no real danger. =] That is why I have not hit someone after being attacked in a confrontation, and every time they stop and ask, and every time I tell them, that I was in no real danger. Every student I have ever taught has never attacked someone and has only ever acted in self-defence. We learn words first before we ever get to learn how to kick or punch. There are some neat techniques to disable someone without ever hurting them, and that is always the goal, that no one gets hurt.
