A school friend of mine, back then...he had nearly all of the bloody he-man, thundercats, ghostbusters, blackstar figures...my mom promised I could get my 1st He-man figure and I asked him what would be the best for motu figure to get... Trapjaw...he said, had the most things to play with...moving jaw, three different arms, glow in the dark ring and a belt for his gear...great advice still after all those years.

Tony, fantastic job. I remember them all, except Screech. The more I say the name, the more I seem to recall it. I was never a fan of MotU, my brother was. He had some stuff. Mattel was really smart about the line. He-Man being inspired by Frank Frazetta, I would have loved to see Trap-Jaw drawn in that style. 1983 was a good toy year straight across the board! Again, fun and informative vid!

What I always found fun were the commercials. They drew you into the MOTU world before you ever had the toy in your hand. You could see yourself as being the kid in the commercial, and then talking to your friends about it. The time taken to develop this series (from cartoon, vehicle and figures), must have been a sight to see back in the day. It is a shame that what must be truly impossible to find, is the storyboard drawings for each episode of the cartoon and commercial. I think one reason why these line of toys are still popular, is because the companies (Mattel, Kenner, etc..) respected and listened to their audience. They knew how to market the product properly, and make toys that would last over time. Something that doesn’t exist these days. Love your videos and especially the stream yesterday Tony. It was fun seeing you get so excited when the tank was up and running Keep up the amazing work and thank you for including us in your passion.

Another great video, Mr. Tony! Appreciate your being objective and still enthusiastic about the subject of your videos. Of the 1983 line, Man-E-Faces and Trap-Jaw were the real stand outs. I think Trap-Jaw was meant to be Man-at--Arms' counterpart. I remember Man-E-Face's cartoon debut, where he was feared as a monster; I think it was Orko who gave him his moniker. The Attak Trakk vehicle, unfortunately, was a disappointment as the its cartoon version was better designed. I think the Talon Fighter was referred to as a Wind Raider in the cartoons.

I spoke to someone that used to work for Mattel and they told me that Faker was an idea cut short, the blue skinned Gar race that Skeletor aka Keldor belonged to was supposed to have many more characters good and evil. After the plan was scrapped they used the body of Faker and just rushed a Heman head, Faker was planned to be either Keldor or a new unknown character to introduce the Gar army.

I got a used Ram-Man back in the day because he became hard to find in stores rather quickly despite his prominence in the TV series. Needless to say, there was a lot of wear to the paint job that wasn't my fault. That said, I just sent a friend request to the previous owner on Facebook. We were classmates. I believe my Tri-Klops used to be his as well. I don't have the ring, but I do have the sword. Trap Jaw is a a great figure, but I lost the belt very early and wasn't happy about that. I very rarely lost accessories, including the ring, which I should still have. Man-E-Faces was the first figure I got after seeing the TV show, which I was initially not interested in watching, but saw when my brother's friend came over. I can't remember the first episode I saw, but the second was the one with Hannibal. The only other toys from this wave I have are Zoar and Panthor. I'm pretty sure my Panthor is in good shape, but I haven't seen it in years because almost all my toys are in storage right now. I never guessed Attak Trak was so fast. I never had it and didn't understand why it looked so different in the show. When I got the DVD set, I noticed "Small Trak" looked like the toy except that the color scheme was reversed.

Awesome video Tony, I'm heaven. As I've mentioned in past posts, the first two waves of MOTU, in that barbarian/mythological world, shall always be my favourite. Although some other technological elements were introduced with some characters, it still did stick with that original 'swords and sorcery' concept that was lost with the slightly "anything goes" feel the line gained later on. I had all but a couple of the second wave (1983), my thoughts: (Typical long post, grab your pillow folks!) * Ram Man is a strange character in that he is essentially a bulky, hollow shell with an action feature that-semi worked, and yet... he is one of the most beloved characters of the line, and is certainly in my Top 10 favourites, almost as if the character's concept and overall charm forgives the rather poor quality. (BTW, I always longed to have Ram Man in that box art orange/brown colours instead of his 'Christmas Tree' colour scheme!) * Man-E-Faces is again classic, with the face-changing design originating from a 'Big Joe' concept. He was the third character I had for the line as a child, and loved him as, having He-Man and Skeletor, couldn't decide whether I wanted a Heroic or Evil character next, so he ticked both boxes! * Faker is of course a cheap repaint, and yet... outside of He-Man and Skeletor themselves... has always been my favourite figure of the entire line!! (Trap Jaw coming a very close second!) I think this was due to his "evil mirror" of He-Man, with odd colours, and being very little used overall in the franchise, adding to the mystique around him. Indeed released as a 'cheap and easy figure' with little tooling (of which there were many over the toyline, especially in the final wave), Faker was re-released late on with a hard head, known by fans as 'Faker II'. By the way, the actual bios of characters were often quite a way past the actual character design, and there is theory that Faker was initially conceived by Mattel as a cross between He-Man and Skeletor (hence having Skeletor's body colour and armour). * Tri-Klops is my third favourite character of the line. He's simple and yet so effective, tapping right into that barbarian/mythical concept that I love about the early line. The exact functions of his eyes notably differed just about everywhere. I loved the loop on his armour too and wish this had become standard for the line. To note is there are a number of TK head-sculpts, ranging from a very blocky, distorted version (my original) to a far more detailed 'human' one. * Evil-Lyn was the only second wave character I didn't have originally. In fact, she was a very late addition to the second wave, coming a few months after the other characters. Some versions have a glow-in-the-dark sceptre, other versions just a standard one. * What can be said about Trap Jaw that hasn't already been said? Awesome, probably the best figure of the entire line, and closely rivals Faker as my personal favourite. Trap Jaw's jaw was originally spring loaded, but I think mine broke early on, and looks like the one you've got here is broken too Tony. Colours on Trap Jaw can be found to vary, with much more vibrant/muted blue torso and green belt/leg details. Fun fact: The very early concept for Trap Jaw was called 'X-Man'... which obviously wasn't used! * Whether Panthor is classed as second wave is debatable... he kinda came from that between-second-and-third-wave space. Either way, I had him, and although exactly the same mold as Battle Cat, I really liked him for his deep purple flocked effect. * I never had Zoar or Screeech. They're okay, but feel a little bulky and clunky to me, having be repurposed from the Big Jim line. Zoar was later said to be the bird form of The Sorceress, but in earliest appearances (including second wave mini-comics) this is not the case. Screeech was an easy repaint just as Panthor was to Battle Cat, and I generally associate it with the third wave, not the second. Trivia #1: The spelling varies between 'Screech' and 'Screeech', even on the actual box of the toy! Trivia #2: Whilst being shown as a robotic bird in the cartoon series, a few other sources show an abandoned idea that Screeech is Evil-Lyn in bird form. * The Attak Trak was awesome, one that I always wanted but never had - instead had to make do playing with my friend's one instead. I'd personally say maybe the best (non-creature) vehicle of the line... though I do love Spydor! Can be found in both red and orange versions, depending on country of origin. * Point Dread is an oddity... seldom appeared on toy shelves that I ever saw (I never had it)... and it's origins seemed unfocused and contradictory. In some respects Point Dread is an addition to the Castle Grayskull playset, designed (very well) to sit atop one of the turrets and is sometimes shown as such, but in other sources this is not the case and in just about every appearance it's background and origin is shown to different, like they never fully fleshed it out. The Talon Fighter is an okay vehicle, maybe a bit clunky and fragile. Trivia: Before Snake Mountain was established as Skeletor's stronghold, a few sources, including early plans for the Filmation series, stated Point Dread to be Skeletor's base (other time he was just said to liver 'in the catacombs beneath Eternia'). ...By the way, for years, many sources incorrectly listed Mekaneck as a second wave character, whereas in fact he is a third wave character. So we'll be seeing him next instalment. Keep up the good work Tony, looking forward to the 1984 episode (even if it is where the line started to change direction). :) P.P.S. Several sources from this time mention 'Prison Star', an intergalactic spaceship where some of the Universe's worst villains were inprisoned. It appears in a few stories and possibly was at once stage conceived as a playset... how wonderful would it have been!

X-Mas 1983, my original MOTU gift as a child was Man-E-Faces and an plastic model kit version of the Attack Trak, either made by Mattel or ERTYL. I'm not sure which. My mother obviously couldn't find or didn't realize that there were two versions of the Attack Trak. (And I didn't know, either, until that Christmas morning when I received it.) It had no motorized action, but the "wheels" did turn the same way. You just had to push it along. While I was initially disappointed with it, I eventually like it. It was very fragile, though, only being made of light plastic model kit plastic.
