Paul Newman is a great actor, like Marcello Mastriano. The producer probably had no idea of the script either. But LA Dolce Vita is more suited to Marcello. Who else but an Italian could play this? People would've felt insulted if an American actor played a life-loving Italian news reporter and would-be author. I love how Sophia Loren points out how Federico Fellini's script-sketch is dream-like, which is how many of his films are, having been inspired by his dreams. The one scene after a night of revelry, he focuses the camera on statues and paintings of Roman Deities frolicking, suggesting how we can act like Gods and Goddesses to our ruin, as mythology shows. Fellini oved Jung's work with dreams, our inner drama until we return to the eternal dream. Thank You for posting this. Please post the interview with Sophia Loren, if possible. She's a wonderful life force too, more than Marcello. Fellini was exceptional in his portrayal and elevation of women, subjugated by fearful men.

Stan, thank you for your interesting observations. Here's the entire interview of the two done by Cavett. Mr. Cavett couldn't have been a better interviewer, not the least for being a truly gifted listener. As to the connection between Fellini and Jung's work, that's a rich vein to explore. My guess is that the affinity was there from the beginning and that finding Jung deepened the filmmaker's confidence in his process and storytelling. Certainly 8 1/2 speaks to the power of dreams, and of course, when it comes to men, there's probably no more compelling element than Women. I've worked on a project (photographic, installation, etc.) for years now that is a meditation of sorts on this movie and its roots in dreams, precisely because it came to me during a difficult night when my own sleep was spent among the images of the film, going back and forth between dreaming and waking - my own. Your comment suggests that I need to get back to it. Thanks. 🙃 Finally, if you're interested, here's the complete interview by Cavett of the two actors: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/iWlkmmhrqn-bt5c.html
