It’s not that Americans like to work, it’s that the American employers don’t like to give paid time off. Sometimes not even unpaid time off!

I know someone that got fired because they got the flu and missed three days. Work culture in the US is so broken, as people are forced to live paycheck to paycheck, and in constant fear of being fired for the slightest thing, often resulting in them going to work while not only still suffering (resulting in mistakes and low functionality) but also contagious, resulting in the spread of disease not only throughout the workplace but to any clients or customers too.
@jacquelinekenknight9280

This is what I was coming down here to say! I’m a teacher and while we get more time off than most Americans, we are limited too. If we take off the first 5 or last 5 days of the school year, we get our pay docked. During that time frame, I had one coworker have to work when her dad passed and another had surgery and have to work the very next day. She couldn’t function and just sat all day on pain pills basically. I’ve had jobs before with zero paid time off- in daycares I worked through stomach bugs, strep throat, flu, etc. I once had a 103 fever (strep) and was told to work but “don’t act sick in front the parents.” So they’d tell me when a parent was coming to pick up their kid so I’d stop leaning/sitting against the wall during that time. Our system is all messed up. And we just pass all these illnesses to others.

That last meme reminds me of a story my dad told us as kids. His fathers favorite expression was, "He would be late for his own funeral." On the way to his fathers funeral the hearse had to stop and wait for a train right as the church bell started ringing. All of the family in the car following the hearse busted out laughing.

As someone who was raised to shower at night: - Saves time in the morning to allow a little bit more sleep before going somewhere like school or work - Keeps your bed clean - Good opportunity to change into pajamas and have good sleep hygiene (signal to the body it's time to relax and wind down with a nice warm shower. Or if it's hot out can even cool the body down which also helps sleep in those conditions) - Speaking of which, not smelling like BO makes it easier to sleep - Relaxes muscles before bed (less likely to wake up feeling stiff and sore) - Can still look great in the morning, just wet a comb and comb the hair to get it damp again and style as usual

Probably as morning showers are commonly listed with health benefits, but you don't really have to shower for that and just a simple Cold water rinse will have the same effect. Best would be a shower at night, no rush or panic chance and have time to clean properly, then quick cold rinse in the morning for those benefits and clear any over night stuff.

I went to the ER after a bee sting (I'm allergic). I needed meds through an IV. The meds made me a little crazy, so they taped a plastic board under my elbow so I wouldn't bend it and pull out the IV. When the bill came, the hospital had charged for each individual piece of tape that had been used to tape the board to my arm. Couldn't just do a flat fee for consumables--they had to itemize each freaking piece of tape.

and lysine supplements with vitamin c can help prevent cold sores on the lips. I get them quite often but whenever I feel it coming (starts itching), i take a lysine pill designed for bodybuilder dosage and the sore never happens. If I forget or cannot take the pill right when the first itching starts, it will come out but the pill helps to reduce the time it stays on my lips. I didn't really find a global research regarding this but there is a research team in Hungary who did local trials with lysine with promising results.

Honestly couldn’t imagine having a holiday system like the US. I get 4 weeks paid holiday and if there’s not already 2 people off then I can take the time off with as little as two weeks warning as long as I have enough paid holiday hours left (and the rota has not already been done). Was a massive help when settling into university, bearing in mind that it was true even though I work in fast food. Did wonders for my mental and financial health while I was a student and will probably continue when I move into my next job. Especially now that inflation is so high that milk has nearly doubled since covid and general inflation is 8.3%. It’s great to have the security that paid rest gives you. Also, while sick leave was unpaid at my company, you weren’t given points unless it became a consistent problem, in which case you got two warnings before being fired, but there was still some leniency if you then had a genuine health problem and could provide a doctor’s note. Plus, if you have an appointment with a doctor, the manager could change your work schedule to fit it in. Oh, and no worries that you’d be fired over poor health because that’s illegal (unless they have reasonable cause to prove that your sick days are actually lazy days), and benefits exist if you can’t support yourself because of medical reasons. You could also take unpaid holiday if you were doing something like transferring to another branch and that involved moving house/settling into uni accommodation etc. However, this is generally not very common.

@meikusje
@meikusje 10 місяців тому
@@smilesad4224that's a very pervasive myth which has been debunked quite often by now. First of all, most people aren't allergic to the pollen bees mostly collect for their honey. Secondly, the process of making the honey actually changes the pollen protein, plus your body's digestive system breaks it down even more, meaning basically no intact pollen makes it into your system to have any sort of effect on your allergies. And lastly, exposure therapy doesn't really work with allergies, so even if you were to ingest enough pollen for it to have effect on your body, it would be far more likely to worsen your allergies, not cure them. That's just a summary, but googling 'does honey help with allergies' and then checking out the legit medical sources will provide more in-depth info.

I got influenza at christmas. One of the nights I started throwing up - Luckily as I was sick I was prepared with a bucket and sat with the bucket. Howeeeever - I started throwing up for so long I actually couldn't breathe (I can't hold my breath for very long, like literal seconds), so I knew I had to go get help. It was dark (the switch is on the opposite end) but I knew where the door was, so still vomitting with a bucket I walk to the door to find someone, because I am worried I would pass out and choke on the vomit or hurt myself (though I felt bad about having to wake someone up). I get to the door and actually struggle finding the doorknob and I start panicking because I start feeling tense cause I can't breathe. It takes me a few seconds in my panic to find the doorknob but I get it open and I get out - Then came the question: Do I? Tumble down the tiny, very narrow hallway with a table in the middle and uneven floors in the dark to get to my mom who is a caretaker of the elderly and therefor has experience with health or Do I? Try still vomitting to tumble down a set of stairs in the dark in hopes that my younger sister (who is a nightowl like me) is still up and in the kitchen where I last saw her? Lucky for me, I didn't have to decide in my non-breahting, still vomitting panic because my sister came to check on me because she thought she heard me crying, so she came to the stairs and asked if I was okay - I signaled her to stay down the stairs and lucky for me I stopped vomitting just enough to go down the stairs and into the kitchen. At this point I just started vomitting in bursts and I managed to sneak a little "Mom" out as in "go get mom" and she ran up to get my mom. For like an hour or something I threw up in bursts and struggled to breathe while my sister and mom tried to help me and my body calm down enough to breathe. It was very intense and I am glad I sort of somehow managed to stay calm enough to get out of the room but I also got scared of getting Influenza again, so if I ever get it I hope to go home to someone and be sick so it wont happen again, because that "breathless-vomitting" happened again like 2-3 days later out of the blue after dinner. (this time in the living room with my parents though)

There's an almost inverted nocebo effect in tattooing. I used to work in a shop before COVID and the people that built up anxiety often did better. The reason being that as soon as they felt the pain, they realized it couldn't compare to what they imagined. Similarity, first timers that confidently think they can handle a tattoo often end up being the ones that get tunnel vision. Regardless of the person's pain tolerance, it can be a shock when they think there won't be any pain. Then it seems like they keep wondering how much worse it will get as you progress. It's like they work themselves into a panic attack.
@SatumainenOlento
@SatumainenOlento 10 місяців тому
Extremely interesting observations!!! I think that who ever makes studies about pain should come and talk to tattoo artists about it! Because people are already there voluntarily subjecting themselves to pain experiences! I think that these type of studies could be on-going thing. We have not learned all about human psyche-pain-mental illness connection etc. Because sometimes people experience their mental illness as physical pain...and we have not understood how to help people's mental illnesses fully yet. So much to discover! On a side note: I had a medical test today in which they check how nerves are responding to stimulation. In fact, they give electric impulces which travel through your nerves and then they can calculate how well the nerve responces. I did not read anything else about it before hand, but by reading throught the leaflet (which they sent) about it it said "mild discomfort" I kind of figured out that it hurts somewhat. Because doctors are never honest about pain levels relating to their medical tests. Because of nocebo-effect. But then I thought that I will not build any expectations about it as I am sure that they would not hurt people that much. Then I went and I was still very surprised about the pain level on my hand! It hurt quite a lot!!! And even that I was clearly in distress and surprised about the pain....the person doing it was so used to people jumping around that she ignored all my un-intentional noices. And then when she moved to my leg...well, then I had a new worry, because then I did not feel as much 😅🤣🤣🤣 Some nerves responded painfully again and others were just little tingles. But it is very interesting to read about your observations on pain on this very day!!! And compare memos on that and on my own experience! I am sure that there is much more to discover on this!!!

That kind of pain can never be as much as getting glass cut out of the bottom of your foot. Had to have it done a couple years ago, and the numbing drug they used kept wearing off after a couple minutes, so they had to keep injecting it around where they were cutting. I now know what it feels like to have my foot cut open, and I had to endure the last bit of the doctor digging in the wound with tweezers to grab the chunk of glass because I was tired of getting stuck with the needle to numb the area.

Fun fact: Bear in Russian means Медведь (sounds like Medved'), or Миша (sounds like Meesha) - short/cute version Analog of the name Michael in Russian is Михаил (sounds like Mikhail), which short/cute version is also Миша So, in a way, dr. Mike and Bear are namesakes =)

To be clear, yes, cats do have knuckles, and this ties into the reason why you should never declaw them- because it's not just the claws being pulled out, it's also their first knuckle being cut off as well. Jackson Galaxy talks endlessly about this in his videos, and many developed nations outlaw the practice altogether.

A lot of vets don't do the procedure even if it's not illegal. It's inhumane and absolutely horrible. If you can't handle training your animals or dealing with their natural instincts, don't get an animal!

Sore mouth spots, when I got this more before id take a strong c vitamin pill they sold back then and hold it up against the area with the tounge for like 15 minutes, till the wound tissue had soaked up enough and then it was more numb after and healed up real quick, it hurts yes but it worked great so thats my go to method.

2:55 BEAR! That's a lot of floof. About the sleep tracker thing, I experienced that quite exactly; not a great sleeper unless I spent enough energy, but Oura ring or other devices make it just worse. Why is my heart rate high, I'm not doing anything!? And then get stressed about that and lo and behold it gets worse. It's just regular variability probably (unless a cardiologist tells me otherwise).

6:58 Correction: Most people do like having holidays - even in the United States - but since the United States doesn't have work rights which include paid holidays, unpaid holidays, parental leave, minimum wage for all jobs and taking on 50% of the insurance costs, many people don't experience that (or get fired immediately if they ask for it). That's why in the United States, they call all of this "benefits" and use it as marketing to get employees, whereas in the rest of the world, it's fundamental labour laws ensuring these rights to everybody no matter how many hours they work or which position they have.
