My son drove the D.A.R.E. car to local schools for several years and talked with students about drugs and bullying. He said those years were the most rewarding of his life. The kids were very interested and wanted someone to talk with. My son is a great listener and the teachers told him he made a big difference in the lives of the students. But when the city needed to cut costs they cut the budget of law enforcement and of course the DARE program was the first to go. His wife, my daughter in law is a 911 dispatcher and has kids call the 911 line just to talk to her about bullying. These kids need to talk and their parents are either too busy or won’t take the time to listen. So both my son and dil spend as much time as possible responding to the kids. My son has put together an after school get together, on his own time, just to listen to the kids. It started out with 7 kids and has grown to over 65 kids so far in just 5 months. He is a great listener, as I said earlier. They don’t have children of their own so they feel this is their way of giving back. They will be so embarrassed if they know I’m talking about them.
