Composer: Felix Mendelssohn
Artists: Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy (piano), Frank van der Laar (piano), Pieter-Jelle de Boer (piano)
Felix Mendelssohn was a virtuoso pianist, and it worth remembering that he was born in 1809, with his friend Schumann being born a year later in 1810, as was Chopin, and Liszt following in 1811. These composers were among the greatest pianists of the 19th century, and they were born at a time when the piano was a relatively modern instrument, and composers such as Hummel, Moscheles (Mendelssohn’s friend), Kalkbrenner and Ries were accorded adulation similar to pop stars today. Beethoven commenced his career in the 1790s as a virtuoso pianist.
No surprise then that the young Mendelssohn composed extensively for his chosen instrument from the outset. From early concertos and sonatas he quickly established his ‘mature’ style in works such as the Rondo capriccioso, and the Andante cantabile e Presto agitato. The masterpieces that followed include the remarkably imposing Variations serieuses and the famous Songs without Words.
Mendelssohn’s style did not change throughout his short creative life - he very quickly composed in what we know as his mature style from his early teens, something even Mozart didn’t achieve.
This album contains the Songs without Words, Variations serieuse, Kinderstucke, Rondo capriccioso, Capriccio, and Trois Fantasies ou Caprices plus several shorter works.

One thing I like about my favourite composer, Schumann, is that he broke off his friendships with people who didn't like Mendelssohn. When I was young there was quite a lot of perjudice against Mendelssohn for being facile. When I was 15 or16 I sang in one of his choral works in the church choir and wrote in my diary, "I will nver say a bad word about Mendelssohn again." I loved playing the Songs without Words that I could manage technically and especially loved the the first one in E major which Schumann said flowed form the purest of springs.

@ Felix de Villiers= I didn't know that about Schumann.Good for him.A man of conviction who recognizes talent Mendelssohn has written some of the most beautiful and enduring music .I think he others were just jealous.I DO remember a few composers were considered too lightweight of much praise or concert space when I was young too..Delius was another -and his music has enriched my life as much as Beethoven's.

For people who did not like the man, or did/could not enjoy his music? Sounds one hell of a reason to break up a friendship. Pity the deaf friends he may have previously had. :(

@@zapazap - No, I know Schumann exaggerated but I like his commitment to Felix M. Schumann did start admiring Wagner but he died before the big operas were composed. He was one of the only musicians in Germany to defend Berlioz and wrote an analysisi of the Symphonie Fantastique.

I too had a prejudice against him. Too saccharine, not avant-garde, oh I do not know why. The crashes of Beethoven fit more with my adolescent self. Now I seek calm, melody and even sound levels so as not jump out of my chair. I will never look down on him again.
@felixdevilliers1
@felixdevilliers1 3 роки тому
@@michaelnancyamsden7410 - He was simply one of the great composers. The whole Mendelssohn family, especially the father, as Jews were anxious to fit into their adopted culture and not to do anything that stuck out as Schumann's music does, but Felix was conscious of this and a marvellous feeling of estrangement runs through his mj0sic. The Scotsch Symphony, the Hebrides. I often played the first Song without Words in E major and when I come to the so-called home key at the end I feel very far from home in some oither home beyond. Felix was better than moist Romantics at not simply repeating the first part but adding something to it, as in this Song i mentioned where he adds something from the middle section.

To Brilliant Classics, thank you for this heavenly piano work on Mendelssohn! I have experienced some of his works that I have in my collectuon, and there is nothing comparable. Therefore, I must conclude on the brilliant merit of these Interpreters who must have entered Mendelssohn's soul and spirit and have enhanced what most beautiful ethereal and sublime they found there... My liking Mendelssohn as a composer has changed radically with the heavenly interpretation of the talented interpreters that you found. My immense Gratitude.

Mendelssohn was the complete musician: composer, performer and conductor. His music is always well-written, beautiful, logical and the gateway composer for young pianists learning to perform because his music is eminently playable. While he doesn't stand up to Beethoven or Chopin's eminence, he is a great composer whose music will live forever. His "Variations Serieuses" is the entry to recital performance of the Masters. I played it at my first major recital and never looked back.

MENDELSOHN composed a killer VIOLIN CONCERTO that stunned the world back then and continues to amaze us and our future generations. To think that he cant even play Violin but managed to compose such a high level Violin Concerto that even Paganini would be impressed. Mendelsohn is one of those composers that take time to grow on you. Once that happens, you will be drawn into his genius musical mind and will start to search in youtube for more of his other works.

I was introduced to classical music by Mendelssohn when I listen to the cassette tape Mendelssohn's Greatest Hits. It has hits like the violin concerto, rondo cappricioso, Piano Trio #1, Piano Concerto, Wedding March, Italian symphony. From there I bought more and more Sony Essential Classics tapes. I must have collected over a 100 tapes. Anywho, I guess I have Mendelssohn to thank for me being able to appreciate classical music. Thanks to have I also was able to enjoy Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Sibelius, Elgar, Richard Strauss, Bruckner, Mahler, Ravel and much more. There is still more pieces I need to listen to.

I'm not a particular fan of Mendelssohn but there is no denying that this set of pieces is a veritable treasure trove, with a lot of hidden gems. Equally impressive, though, is both the interpretation and the production. Both do an excellent job of quiet competence, fundamentally getting out of the way of the music and allowing it to speak for itself without unnecessary distraction. Forget some of the big names in terms of both performers and labels; this is an object lesson in charming music, played intelligently and with a beautiful piano sound. Well done to all involved.

@@CK-kd5pn - He wrote that "Mozart invented the entire GENRE", classical music that is. Bach is baroque music. Baroque music is a style of Western art music composed from approximately 1600 to 1750. This era followed the Renaissance, and was followed in turn by the Classical era. Baroque music is tuneful and very organized and melodies tend to be highly decorated and elaborate. Bach in 1750 has traditionally been regarded as the end of the Baroque Period. Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven composed during the Classical Period. The well-known Classical era of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven is said to have begun in 1775. The transitional, 25 year period between is known as Rococo.

@@paulsomers6048 I worship Beethoven, but I mentioned only Schubert and Schumann, because, for me, their and Mendelssohn’s compositions, dedicated to solo piano, equally enriched Romantic music landscape. I think, I’ve known all Beethoven’s works, since I was 10, but these 3 I discovered much later, especially Mendelssohn. Schumann was the only serious German composer, who befriended Felix and defended him before antisemites ( Wagner included) in musical circles.

Yes, it started with severe criticism and denigration of Mendelssohn by Wagner( well known anti-semite) in the press.Wagner was famous not only as a composer, but also as a musical critic.

I often listen to Mendelssohn, so I'm very keen to know what you mean when you say he is "underrated...by the masses." I don't live in an English speaking country at present, so I'm not up on the latest expressions, but on YT music channels I often see this expression: X is underrated. Is there some way that that can be shown? For example, by number of CD or online sales? (Nobody where I live buys CDs or even DVDs.) What about likes/dislikes and views? As of my viewing, over 1,800,000 people have clicked on the site; of these, over 18,000 have expressed a like. Are you saying the relatively few likes indicate mass disapproval? (YT eliminated the dislikes feature from public view.) If this disapproval is anti-semitic, why would they click in the first place? To purposely show they dislike it? That seems odd to me. I would've thought that even anti-semitic morons would have a better way of occupying their time. Or do you have some other means of assessing how composers are "rated" by the current "masses," whom I would have guessed prefer pop music, not classical. For example, I sometimes listen to ClassicalFM from the UK and KBACH from Arizona in the US. They have a listener survey and usually play something from their annual Top 100 every day. These get played a lot. Even so, listener requests often are for works from that list! (I think they should have Top 1000 so they have more robust selection.) I hear Mendelssohn from time to time on both stations, so I deduce he's on their list. In addition, Mendelssohn composed a piece that I think must be one of the most beloved of all pieces of music, ever, even among anti-semites: The Wedding March from Midsummer Night's Dream.

@@montyvierra2678 As is usual with summarizing concise assessments, especially my statement is based on a very wide range of intellectual and artistic insights and life experiences. It is a well-worn trick to try to impose narrow intellectual categories to try to shed a bad light on one's vis-à-vis. Self-evidently, I will not be pushed to give justifications here, nor to give art lessons here for free. I merely provide you the gift of some summary hopefully thought-provoking impulses: + Mendelssohn-Bartholdy was born in 1809. For example (regarded as such:) classical music and unfortunately also antisemitism are much older. Current u-t-details have been a minor aspect for my statement. + "anti-semitic morons" hadn´t found “a better way of occupying their time” but to, for example, accuse Jewish for more than two thousand years as so called murderers of Jesus (by the way a Jew himself). Or to murder millions of (in their eyes) Jewish humans in gas chambers. In our times, Israel has several times been attacked with missiles precisely as randomly as Nazis attacked Great-Britain with V1 and V2 missiles. And so on. + u could have looked up, for example, in Wiki yourself: “After his death, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy became the target of anti-Semitic propaganda. The beginning was made by Richard Wagner, who was also influenced by Mendelssohn's compositions, with his pamphlet “Das Judenthum in der Musik”, which appeared in 1850, three years after Mendelssohn's death, first under a pseudonym and then expanded in 1869 under his name. By the time of the second publication, Wagner was already an influential composer, and he "permanently damaged Mendelssohn's reputation": his view contributed to the disdain for Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's work in the second half of the 19th century.” + That the Wedding March as an isolated snippet of a larger Opus and Oeuvre has become a sort of ´garden gnome´, that can be put whenever and wherever deemed appropriate, has nothing to do with appreciation for the composer, but rather confirms my statement. Most people may not even know that it is by Mendelssohn: + Also concerning current any ´regionally orientated´ radio hit lists, I never wrote that Mendelssohn was unknown, as you wish to imply. + The masses seem to like in particular Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and so on (my personal ranking always starts with Bach, like those of very many professional musicians). If u look, for example, for “Vivaldi” “Summer” on u-t there are on top of the list currently roughly 35 million clicks on Ms Samuelsen. Musically, her performance is very average (for example often too slow and sometimes too fast to demonstrate virtuosity, and so on), as it is unfortunately often the case here on u-t, she is appreciated by the musically ignorant masses for being a relatively attractive (i.a. for being blonde) female; + The pianist Mr Glenn Gould even wrote (while he meant that in a more subtle context, the quote is used here to awake u) about Mozart, that he died not too early, but too late. + Moreover, different strokes for different folks, Jedem Tierchen sein Pläsierchen...: if all women were only attracted to one specific man (and the vice versa), humanity would already be extinct... So, ur attack is a priori unsound also for that reason, my statement stood and stands in any case. + Last but certainly not least: It is the essence of great art, for example music, to express the inexpressible using gifts and skills of the particular individual. Therefore, I do not participate in an argy-bargy here with intellectual categories far too small to capture and comprehend great art, like for example by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, but: I continue to savour with all my senses music by various classical (and by the way also contemporary) composers. 😉have an awakening double espresso and, ´Monty´ (rather ´Mighty Virus or so´-fake-troll? ur channel is otherwise already empty only due to vacancies), a nice day .

I found it; it came to my email address. I'll read it there. But the end is a little weird: [´Monty´ (rather ´Mighty Virus or so´-fake-troll, ur channel is otherwise already empty only due to vacancies)] a/ Monty is my name, so why put it in quotes? Have you never heard it before? Any, you would think (or, rather, I think) that on a discussion forum dealing with music, people would use their own names. To each his own. b/ I don't understand the part about "my" channel being "empty"? I don't have a channel. And I don't understand how, in any case, it could be "empty only due to vacancies." That phrasing and others I picked up in a quick glance of your text suggest that you have another language that you use. If you have a preference, let me know. Maybe I can accommodate you.

This composer's work is very nice as it reflects the peaceful everyday life of grass-grazing sheep.

Nothing of the sort! There are too many different emotions, most pleasant, but still. For grazing sheep choose Philip Glass- more appropriate!
