Very sad, Argentina got the tactics all wrong. Messi was on the ball too much if they mixed it up a bit more and had Messi try to run in behind and play forward a bit, it would have forced Uruguay to back off. Also referee was disgraceful. The only defensive strategy was to foul Messi

Ah! the weird decade of Argentine football. Argentina had a really good crop of attacking football. Sometimes In the same position with similar move set. but without a holding midfielder and a pivot. That meant a non existent midfield and brilliant wing play and no answer to counter attacks. And the coaches that handled this team , were below than average. Most just employed - attack , attack and attack. Hoping the front three somehow score something and they move into next phase. Which made a really jarring , inconsistent performances from Argentina each game in each world cup. It was hilarious and sad at the same time. Then the most bonker tactics with Mascherano and Messi. So the coaches tried employing Mascherano as a holding midfield and responsible for link play along with full defensive role. Which was insane . And honestly impossible for one man. So Messi dropped further and further down below midfield . Where he would receive the ball from Mascherano and then try to go forward trying set up a playmaking. Then he would go further and further up till attacking third as a second or third striker to put pressure. While Mascherano would try to pull the defense line high to create pressure on midfield. As you can understand , the moment the opponent counter attacks began, Mascherano would need to run back to defend while Messi had to drop down to midfield to begin a cycle a new. It was exhausting just to watch , and it was downright horrible situation for those 2. It didn't help when Higuain and Tevez was missing chances and the pressure was mounting on Messi to score, who was overwhelmed play making as it is. I have never seen a series of coaches to make tactical blunder year in and year out with talents like Aguiro, Di maria , Tevez , Higuain and Messi. The were each specialist in their clubs. Each of them individually match winners when employed successfully. yet..for more than a decade they were used wastefully. It's a shame. This crop of Argentina was capable of winning more than 1 world cup with correct coach. In my opinion they were more talented than the 2014 Brazil squad.
