I think Meta realises it is the only way to survive. In pretty much every market, there seems to be space for only two players Desktop - Apple + Windows Phones - Apple + Android Serviers - Windows + Linux Cars - Tesla + [either Apple Car Play or Android Auto but probably not both] Tablets - iPads (Apple) + [either Microsoft Surface or Android but probably not both, possibly neither, possibly someone completely different] Web frameworks - React (Meta + Microsoft) + Angular (Google) AI frameworks - Tensor (Google) + Torch (Meta) AI hardware - Tensor (Google) + Cuda (NVidia) CPU hardware - AMD64 (AMD + Intel) + AArch64 (Apple + Qualcom + Google + Amazon + Microsoft + Samsung + others)

Meta's decision to open source the Meta Quest operating system is a smart move because as you say it potentially increases the number of developers who will produce apps for Meta Quest and any other VR headset running that OS. Apple Vision Pro is going to end up like the M series iPad Pro, excellent hardware crippled by its walled garden OS and ecosystem. Meta Quest 3 may not be as technologically advanced as the Apple Vision Pro, but it already supports more use cases than Apple's product and at one seventh of the Apple Vision Pro's price, it suddenly becomes an incredibly attractive alternative.

It's funny how they are open-sourcing something that's based on an already open-source operating system, which is Android OS.

Apple made a huge mistake by releasing the Apple Vision Pro at $3500. They should have released lower end sub $1000 headset first to build up a larger user base.

I just can't trust Meta, A company that will sell or use my data without asking me.

The problem for all these AR/VR things is they don’t really bring anything compelling for the mass market , their use cases is still kinda limited, and around the world due to the world economy being in the toilet , there imo is a vast number of people that don’t have a lot of disposable income to blow on headsets . And that makes it is an even bigger hurdle for the Vision Pro to overcome given its price.

If I'm looking for a basic VR headset to get started, for example to use VR chat, that is inexpensive, what would people recommend? I'd rather not get second hand given it goes on your face but looking for any suggestions, even if I have to go down that route.

If Steve were here I don't think he'd be too thrilled with these clunky headsets. I would think Steve would have made the AVP 1.0 closer to the size of the Bigscreen Beyond than a Meta Quest. Ultimately I think these VR/AR headsets are going to fail to get mass adoption if they can't get them to be much smaller and cheaper.

If Pico uses this Horizon OS it would be a game changer as they tend to have better specs than the Quest and with the Quest software they could be a big player in the XR market

VR is what's keeping VR back. Even as Meta turns to open source, it could still turn out the same way when Apple open sourced their OS way back in the day - bombing because no one wanted another beige box that didn't define itself as something desirable or different. The thing that broke the damn for Apple was the iMac G3. Apple laid the foundation for decades with their advertising by focusing on fashion, by making their computers colorful and less technology oriented. I think VR has the same hurdle. Until it becomes a fashion accessory like a phone or a pair of ear buds, the masses will not buy into it. 10 more years and we could finally see meta raybans be the final form for the quest. I own all the quests btw.

I know it’s popular to hate on Meta and the privacy concerns surrounding it, as well as the narrative that mark is evil. But honestly, I’m kinda rooting for Zuck now. I used to be on the other side, but lately, I’ve started feeling like we need other companies to shake things up at Apple. Apple seems to be playing it way to safe, just doing minor refreshes to existing products. It's all about shareholder profits, and not messing up their margin, The Apple Car project got scrapped, and the Apple Vision Pro is like very underwhelming for something they work for 10 years on and crazy expensive . I know it’s cliche to say but like I miss the old Apple-the one that had different products for different people, like the iPod mini era. Good-quality stuff that didn't break the bank. Right now, I've got an iPhone 12 and an M1 MacBook, and I don’t even feel the need to upgrade. I'm tired of the whole 'better camera, faster chips' routine. How about they surprise us with something like a more affordable Apple Vision, or maybe even an electric bicycle? Or idk something that gets us really pumped for the future, right now The future's looking kinda dull, and I can't handle another camera upgrade and a bigger screen

This is dumb. Meta is losing money on their headset. How would anybody compete with that when the only money they make comes from the hardware? Apple is the only player in almost any market with the ability do custom silicon, so competitors to meta won’t be able to differentiate with specs. Unless Meta does profit sharing on software sales there is only the small premium market for an already niche product. I feel like this might have something to do with the China market, but why would they not take what they want and strip out Meta’s storefront, so Meta loses out on any money from their work. No clue what Meta’s thinking.

Interesting observation…apple got lost in their own success imo…I really appreciate the quality apple workmanship , but… devs are going to flood and inundate the meta OS shell. When it comes to things like a phone, watch, AirTags, and a iPad… yeah I suppose I can live with iOS…But other than that my MacBook runs Debian …and as for a VR headset…I think I will pass on Vision OS… VR is too big for the “walled garden” and that is one thing Meta got right…
