Can you dive more into sunshine hours. I think thats more important to most people than temperature or rain (we dont mind it raining and being a bit chilly if we can see the sun). Over the last year it must be pretty dire.

For some reason sunshine hours seems to have become unfashionable. We know about the wet; we know about the rain; we know about the wind; we know about the temperatures. But I think the grass is not growing like it should is because we are down on sunshine hours and many places are still like bogs. I don't think I have had so little grass in my garden for mid-April.?

Easily the best weather chanel for the UK. I live in Pennine West Yorkshire. Hail has been a striking feature and yesterday it fell as snow for long enough to accumulate in sheltered spots (like walls and the eves of roofs). Today is very cold but sunny. Its remarkable how varied the weather is in Spring. A couple of years ago we dined outside in March. this year we are still lighting fires to keep warm.

There's nothing wrong with the preamble. It's a fascinating view of how windsheer works and how a tornado can be developed. Can you look at the pollen forecast and the UV levels expected? How will the weather over America impact us in the coming weeks?

What controls the track of the jet stream: what makes it more northerly or more southerly? is it cyclic and/or forced by ENSO/NAO?
@metoffice

Jet stream is more driven by temperature contrasts but global drivers like you mention eg ENSO and NAO play a part, it's all one system at the end of the day.

@@metoffice When I did meteorology for "A" Level Geography back in 1980/81, our teacher used to tell us that we'd get the weather the US got about 6 weeks later - is this because it takes that much time for the same temperature contrasts that drive the jet stream to migrate to our part of the Atlantic basin?

Another great insight into the weather. It would be interesting to also see a chart like the temperature and rainfall for level of zonal (from the south west/west) weather. This clearly has a big impact on temperatures and rainfall and I'd imagine this year has to be right up there with the most zonal of years. If the zonal weather was to continue into the summer I'd assume the average yearly temperatures would come down, though rainfall likely to continue to rise. Really hoping it doesn't continue though.

The graph showing us that we are having a warm April and even trending towards the top end of that. Its based on the overall average, any chance we can get some regionality? (spelling?) I live down Southampton way, we are thin blooded and April doesn't feel like it has been warmer. Would be nice to see those line graphs for some of the areas so we can see how our (local) weather is fairing?

To make the Deep Dives better rather like our weather just mix them up would be my suggestion. Maybe it was merely a straight-line wind event which also suggests we have more videos about wind then? Best wishes, Tony.
