The speaker of the house, Lindsay Hoyle, called out Michael Gove in the Commons after he reportedly delivered an 'off the cuff' statement on the new Cumbrian coalmine.

Hoyle suspended parliament to give transcribers time to provide a suitable copy of Gove's statement. The minister was accused of potentially breaching ministerial code as the statement provided to the speaker and the opposition did not match the one given at the dispatch box.

That's interesting from a procedural standpoint. We don't usually give it much thought, but of course the transcription is more impotant than the in-person statement. At the end of the day, it is what goes into the paper record that affects policy down the line.

I ain't no conservative but perhaps this in a very small way unpicks the the mess left by Thatcher. It's crazy that the UK ended up importing coal and steel. It makes environmental sense that steel used in the UK is created in the UK.

@@johnbinnie5697 Most of this coke -coal, about 85%, is not being produced for UK industries - it is being exported - so of no benefit to UK steel. Also most steel producing plants around the world are moving away from being coal powered to hydrogen powered as it is greener and cheaper.

The speaker should have interupted him the moment he went away from the speach he had and the one delivered to the opposition not let him do the whole thing. Gove and the Tories think they can get away with anything now they know that there days are numbered.

That would be too robotic and take away the point in a minister talking at all. The point the Speaker rightly made is that Gove made a difference of substance by his informal ramblings. It would be awful if every time a sentence was accidently missed or misread the speaker jumped in - indeed, the speaker could not even do his job properly if that level of detailed listening was required.

Typifies the show that this government has been since Cameron left office. He should have taken the rest of his party with him. Pathetic.

Too little to late from the speaker. The Tories know they can do what they want, and have time and time again. With all the speaker knows his place in the lords is secure and they ‘can go get a early cup of tea’. I mean the weakness of the man.

If he was weak he wouldn't have intervened. What he did was the appropriate intervention in the appropriate way at the appropriate time. He was clearly furious, but instead of getting angry he used the tools at his disposal to stop Gove in his tracks & get things back to their proper course. I'm confused as to what you want him to do? Sure we'd all like to see him order Gove be tarred & feathered, then thrown in the Thames, but that's not realistic.

Potential impact on the local environment. 😂 In 20 years time they are going to take the most radioactive material on the planet, currently being stored at Sellafield, which is really handy and stick it down that coal mine. 🤫

The EU has just arrested politicians suspected of corrupt dealings. It would be wonderful if the UK authorities could do the same to our MPs, finally trust could return in government.

Why did this speaker allow Gove to finish the statement before intervening? The Speaker should have called to order the minister as soon as he deviated from the transcript that had been made available. I do not hold the present Speaker in any great regard.

Easy, kid. So what extra he blurted would be on the record VS what he provided. And those two could be compared for full effect of action taken and or punishment. Let people dig their own holes.

Why didn't he send it to everybodys laptops so they could read it in the parliament?? Ooh, I forgot this is the english parliament that work like they did 100-200 years ago, not a modern parliament like they have in Scotland, Wales and NI. And for that matter in most democracies around the world.
