Manny Diaz was hellbent on getting sacks/ strip sacks to turn momentum. DE flew upfield all game creating creases and Michigan game plan was to avoid that disaster. Sherrone coached circles around Franklin

My point exactly.. this is how you counter this teams aggressive ass defense.. run at them.. the adjustments that were in game after 2 series was next level. Going too a jumbo set is something we haven’t bring out all year was huge. Michigan is finding ways too win & running with it〽️〽️

Nobody risks losing a game to “make a statement” they ran it because PSU couldn’t score. They didn’t even run it that well tho. On 5 drives they punted 3 away, they would rather give up over half of their 2nd half possessions than attempt a pass, that is concerning

@@anthonytitone it obviously was working well enough, and greatly reduced the risk of a turnover, which would have been a huge momentum swing (i.e. Penn States 3rd quarter turnover allowed Michigan to burn 8 mins off the clock and took all of the wind out of their sails). Also averaging 4.9 yards per carry against the #1 ranked run defense that has averaged only giving up 2 yards per carry isnt a statement? Tell me you have blind hatred for Michigan without telling me you have blind hatred for Michigan 😂

@@thedruekefamilyadventures8890 it’s a good win overall & the committee should treat it as such but it’s not a mold that’ll win them games in the future. It reminds me of the time Iowa would’ve been statistically better off punting the ball than attempting offensive drives against Ohio State, sure OSU dominated but that game wasn’t a future benchmark for Ohio State’s defense.

@@vjay714 Penn state would have been better off cage rushing like OSU does majority of the time. Penn states Dends ran themselves out of so many plays. I'd say OSUs dline plays with a lot more discipline but maybe not as seasoned as Penn states dline. They were rushing like Michigan was actually passing the ball. All on Manny Diaz

Manny Diazes defense held its own against Michigan. I like the call from Michigan’s interim coach to just run it over and over on them to wear a good defense down. It was effective and a great strategy.

well, the reference to the Michigan team of a couple years ago against GA was some encouragement for PSU. most of their best players except for the left tackle are frosh and sophomores. so, perhaps in a couple years, they will compete. in the Fox pregame they said UM has the "oldest" or something like that team in FBS. and that made me uneasy because a good team of seniors will almost always beat a good team of sophomores. well, the game in two weeks will sure be interesting, as will how either OSU or UM or both will compete with the SEC this year.

The margins are thin in these matchups. Penn St loses due to trash coaching more often than not. Franklin has outlived his utility at State College. His coaching, when it’s a talent equated field, goes against Penn St. That makes all the difference in the final outcome.

If Penn state is content with 10 games a year and not be a national title contender, then sure, persist with JF. If you want to be serious about your chances, hire someone who can coach well. Look at Oregon or UW for example.

@@nathanneumayer1447 I don’t know for sure but I don’t think the answer is nobody. The assertion that Penn St can’t find anyone better is ridiculous. Oregon went out and got lanning. FSU got a baller. It didn’t take them forever to just hang around at the same level. You’ve teams like TCU going to playoffs with much lower talent compared to Penn St. like I said, Franklin has outlived his utility at State College. He’s a great recruiter and a mediocre coach. We need excellence in both parameters.

They are not outmatched. They are out coached. If you watch the OSU and Michigan games. Both are a mirror repeat of one another. The PSU defense gives them a chance to win, offenses head was somewhere on another planet, mostly from a coaching perspective! That’s why they lost.

Exactly why I came back to check in. I blew snot out of my nose when he picked Penn State, then fell over after they cover as well. Poor guy doesn’t know football too well I guess. I knew Michigan was beating PSU and OSU when they played each other. Nobody has an answer for a 1,000lb sledge hammer swung by gorillas. I give them credit for this win. However, Penn states problem was there QB play. Drew allar was terrrrrrible 10/22 for 70 yards. And I don't think all of the error was due to Michigan's defense. There was a shit ton of flat out baaaad throws.

I saw that game completely opposite. UM's tackles were beat clean at least 5 times in the first two drives. They couldn't protect JJ so they ran the ball. I think this was way more about James Franklin and his coordinators not adjusting. Manny Diaz was over aggressive with his blitzes. Yurcich and the offense was anemic. With all of that the game came down to two fumbles that both bounced UMs way. If the Corum fumble is recovered by PSU they go up 10-0 and that game is completely different.

Yup, a lot of people are ignoring these big facts and I am someone who has said all year watching michigan that their oline is not what they were last yr. They are not great in the run game (needed extra linemen just to run vs psu) and have been bad in pass pro all yr but mccarthy has scambled and made plays vs bad teams. People still will tell you michigan has a great oline and it's because they don't watch the games

Let's not glaze over the fact Michigan scored their fewest points all season and the game was a one score game for most of it. Their streak of 30 points per game came to an end as did McCarthy's Heisman hopes. Still must have been the most B1G ever

I disagree JJ couldn’t it was very clear from the beginning that the right tackle and the left guard game beat up and down the field in the passing game. If they would’ve tried to throw the ball more, it would’ve been guaranteed sacks and interceptions. Everything else he said is fine.

You aren’t wrong for taking Penn State! The game was coached in a 1/10 fashion. With even moderately better coaching Penn State wins easily. Our OC is out now so hopefully we bring in a far better one! Keep in mind, we witnessed the worst display of game planning in a lifetime by coach Franklin and Penn State only lost by 1 touchdown.

Can’t get our hopes up until Franklin is gone. We were giving Franklin his last chance during the Michigan game. Fans this year felt we have a team that could compete. Josh I always enjoy your analysis. As always Michigan is bigger and stronger and used extra lineman that Penn State did have a good answer, but I also believe the didn’t pass because they couldn’t pass. Penn State’s D ends were embarrassing the Michigan tackles. Michigan had to run.

Michigan fans who closely watched all the games this season were legitimately worried that their Woverines no longer had a run game. J.J. looked like a #1 draft pick in a passing offense. It was reassuring to see Michigan pound Penn State into oblivion with nothing other than the supposedly defective and missing run game. We come out of the PSU game reassured that we have a well-rounded offense that will forcibly take whatever a defense leaves open for the taking. This is, perhaps, why Blue fans were so much more satisfied with this victory than fans nationwide who seem to think it showed that Michigan had no passing game.

JJ McCarthy should not be a Heisman candidate. Here's how you know: ask yourself, "if I replaced my QB with JJ are we better?" And if you can't say that for every team that doesn't have a QB currently in Heisman Race (UW, Oregon, LSU) than he ain't it, he ain't the guy to win the top prize in CFB.

I've been saying that forever. Michigan don't run an offense that makes a Heisman winner. The Heisman is a QB trophy. It goes to the guys who throw it 40 times a game. Michigan don't run that type off offense. Now do I think jj would be in NY if he was on an osu or a team that throws the ball far more then run It. I think you would have a case for it. At the end of the day JJ only wants one thing win the natty. He don't care about anything else. If he did he would have not allowed 38 run plays in a row.

Beat the brakes off of Michigan in 2019 in Ann Arbor. Michigan ducked the Buckeyes in 2020 (and before you use the same old tired Illinois response, Michigan held a full practice two days after they were supposedly unable to field a team - that’s not how Covid works). Michigan was already exposed to be cheating in 2021 and 2022.

I completely disagree lol. If Penn State would have had any offense at all they win that game. Take away those two long runs and Penn State out ran Michigan. It only seemed lopsided because Penn State couldn't score to save their life. But if you look at the stats that you posted here they are actually pretty dam close.

People make a lot of excuses for what michigan lacks which is avg oline play all yr and avg wr play. Their db's were also getting beat but Allar could not hit an open wr to save his life. With the possibility of 5 undefeated teams, one team can't go to the playoffs. Hmm....Here's a thought: Don't allow Michigan to go because all of the other teams didn't cheat. Easy solution. PSU head coach was responsible for the point differential. Going for 2 twice when he shouldn’t have and gifting UM with great field position that 5 points of differential given. UM capitalized on the field possession turning an east 3 to seven. So with good coaching that game should have been tied at end of regulation.
