great insight into Dr. Mike's background and thoughts. A few shrugs but no grabbing of left shoulder by left hand today probably meaning he wasn't too intellecutally troubled by the interview. He seemed a bit more conciliatory on government snooping than I would have given him credit for however? Some more grilling on this subject is in order, possibly with some of the other security types on Computerphile! A government-vs-privacy roundtable?

Interesting! I have been using a plant identification app on my phone for a while now which I find really helpful on hikes and such. I’m routinely amazed at the accuracy of the identifications given I’m just using a cell phone camera and considering how closely many plants resemble one another in terms of leaf structure, fruits etc. I wonder if any of Mike’s work went into these apps?

That bit about R&D code, lol. Some of the papers I've read in undergrad were eye-bleeding to look at. That translates to industry pretty well. Whenever we have a PhD they usually write absolute garbage code and generally underperform but they know the specialty (I'm speaking specifically with respect to video encoding) with amazing amount of in-depth knowledge at a conceptual & mathematical level.
