From ordinary Korean's perspective, here is what I saw in Minari. (Maybe interpretation below is not that Korean, but I just wanted to share ; sorry for the grammar mistakes) I personally thought the film could be analyzed on three levels - tough life of immigrants - trade off between sense of breadwinner and happiness of one's family - attitude change when people come to adopt to new environment and achieve something 1. Fire -> Right before fire, steven yeon and yeri han was on the verge of breaking up -> The grandma mistakenly burns all the crops -> Grandma stares at the family sleeping together on the floor : Sacrifice of grandma herself and the crop enable the family to reunite and pieced love between steven and yeri together 2. Minari -> minari is not ordinary crop that people sell in the market (many grandmas usually sell minari on the ground, not in the formal marketplace) -> it is more like wild plant that adopts wherever it is seeded -> It symbolizes wildness at the same time, strength and ability to adopt in a new environment -> Such features contradict with the attitude of steven yeon at the beginning when he refused to hire a person to find the location of groundwater -> After visiting location of minari and starting to genuinely acknowledging the presence of grandma/mother in law, steven yeon changed opened his mind to really adopt to the environment 3. Grandma -> sacrifices herself for the family's happiness (she died at the end of the film, leaving happiness and miracle of healing her grandson's cardiovascular disease -> Also the film metaphorically shows that life of grandma was lonely and harsh like how minari has grown in the wild environment without attention of farmers

Thank you so much for these fantastic insights! I love how your points about the minari plant tie together details of Korean culture and the films symbols so well, it's an area of insight that I wanted to learn a lot more about so thank you, thank you for watching and for your super authentic contribution!!

In the name of movie reviews, generally YT reviewers just narrate the entire story end to end. There is nothing new to take away. This review however, is so much more than what I just saw in the movie. You have given it so much meaning. It's beautiful!

Wow thank you so much! This means so much to me because this is my goal with this channel. I really want to share my interpretations of the meaning and messages of films that are layered or obscure (instead of summarizing) and I think that's what you took from this, so thank you so much!! And thank you simply for clicking and watching, it all really means a lot!!

I think that the family was able to sell the Minari which in the USA is s rare and valuable herb, it probably ensured their financial safety for the time.

Looking for this one too. As somebody with immigrant background, I can strongly relate to the subject even if korean focus is heavily family and generational duty centered. The symbolism of the plant, not only the resilience, but also the "enracinement" could be important : first generation immigrants often have the sentiment to be a "tree without a root".
@lucasblue20
@lucasblue20 3 роки тому
Yeaah so true about being a tree without a root, I see that in my parents. Having heard their story, it's such a restart, that they have to decide what the new root is (in their culture and values) as they raise my siblings and I in a brand new environment

Thank you so much! I'm actually planning a video for Promising Young Woman but I really wanna tap in to the female perspective so I'm reaching out to a really intelligent friend of mine who told me she also loved the movie. We're going to speak on the phone so she can give me her insights on how the film relates to everyday female life and we may even record together, which would be super cool! So this one may take some time to come out, but it surely is coming out, I can guarantee that! And thank you so much for watching this one, I'm really glad you enjoy the videos!!

Loved this video, didn't expect to be so drawn into it and watch the entire thing but I did lol :) For me, I felt that the film focused a lot on juxtaposing ideals. As you said, these ideas often clash, especially ideas about collectiveness vs individuality, tradition vs modernity, family vs success. It was only through the tragedy of both the grandma and the fire that a balance was able to be struck in these ideals, and just as the wild minari was able to thrive in harsh places, the family was able to come together and adapt to their new environment/reality.
@lucasblue20
@lucasblue20 3 роки тому
Thank you! It really means a lot to hear that the video and ideas can be captivating. I love your ideas about juxtaposing ideals, it can be really hard sometimes to find our identity when there are so many opposing influences like the ones you mentioned. And yeah totally, tragedy grounds us and allows us to forget about the influences that don't matter as much as we thought they did. And the many parallels with the minari (like the one you mentioned about resilience) is my favorite aspect of the film. Thank you so much for watching, I love your insights!!

Hey I think a little while ago you mentioned The Favourite, I recently saw it and it is really great! I had no idea what the premise was until I realized it revolves entirely around a rivalry. And in the end, it was almost like no one truly ended up happy. I feel like it would be so good for a future video so I'll add it to my polls list. Thanks for bringing it up!!

While I know the grandmother and grandson's relationship is the highlight of this movie and the symbolism of the minari plant is front and center - I couldn't help but identify with the father's character when I watched this. Your analysis does a great job of showing the whole picture of the movie, and I felt like the son's heart condition was central to understanding the father's misguided attempts to provide financially for his family. As a father myself who watched this movie right after getting a congenital heart disease diagnosis for my son, this movie hit really close to home for me and the father-and-son dynamic really spoke to me. I think this movie does a great job of showing all the sides of the story of an immigrant family experience without relying on one dominant narrative to do all the work. This movie works so well because of how all the stories weave together and influence one another and I think that's really hard to achieve in any movie.

@Matthew Lane This is so touching to read. I love so much to hear personal connections to films like yours that are unique to your life, and can only be fully understood by the experience. It's touching to hear about your unbreakable connection with your son and how that gave you a deeper understanding of Lee Isaac Chung's intentions with his characters. It's something that research can't match, so I'm really grateful to hear your perspective. Thank you so much for watching and providing your insights!

Man, the number of views and subscribers does not do justice to this channel. I've seen dozens if not hundreds of various video essays and film analysis videos, some of those with hundreds of thousands of views, and I am positively sure that this channel would rank at the top. Keep up your oscar dissections. Such attention to detail, profound analysis of themes and symbols is not that common. It'd be great if you did this for all the best picture nominees (especially Nomadland and Mank). Really hope that you succeed in this endeavor. Good luck!

Wow this is quite the comment, thank you so much! I'll certainly keep the analyses coming every week because it's so much fun to share ideas and have conversations with people who share the interest in film. You probably won't want to hear this but I was planning on doing Mank and I changed my mind to do Synchronic (which is probably not as good of a film, it's just that it just came out on streaming services). I will do Mank though in the near future. Maybe I could do Citizen Kane and Mank back-to-back which would strengthen each analysis. Yeah let me know and I'll do it for sure.
