Previous episode their mechanic told them the skid playes are missing on their GL - this episode they comment thay the GL does not have protection - the GL comes with very solid steel skid plates over the whole engine and another over the gearbox from factory - you can jack the GL up on the factory skid plates - I own the same generation ML550 - amazing how easily it can offroad in snow, sand and rocks, as long as you know where the limit is. Incidentally I also recently had the BF Trail Terrain tires fitted.

We had a GL450 and absolutely loved it. For our 10th anniversary, my wife and I took it on a trip through New Mexico up into Colorado and back across to Kansas. During the trip, my wife spotted a road that led to a hot spring on her atlas. The road was a dotted line. That road ended up being the Ophir Pass. We cranked the suspension up and sent it! That day we found out the GL is not only fast and comfortable, it holds its own off-road as well! No lockers or anything on ours, but it was sure-footed as can be.

A friend had one of these while her husband had an F-250. One day the rain here on the Gulf Coast was so bad their property turned to mud. He got stuck in the Ford. She pulled him out with the Mercedes. Only thing she didn't like about the vehicle was the maintenance - every trip to the dealer even for an oil change was four figures.
@CarswithNash

That is just the dealers being expensive though, they're actually no harder to work on than any other vehicle so you can take it anywhere for the maintenance and or do it yourself and save Lots over bringing it to the dealer.

Four figures for an oil change gosh that seems a little pricey for me. I have a 2020 Chevy Silverado. They have a special deal at my dealership since I bought a used truck from them. They do my oil changes and my tire rotations for $55 after taxes and obviously they do the tire pressure tire rotation top off the windshield. Washing fluid all that every 5000 miles per 55 bucks. Honestly I go there every 4000 miles but still.

We had a 2005 4runner limited with the V8, full-time AWD, and the magnetic ride control. It was a tank. So reliable until it 154,000 miles when it developed an issue with the secondary air pump. We traded it in for a 2014 SR5. While I liked the looks of the SR5 the V6 worked very hard, the ride wasn't as nice. my wife hated the part-time AWD. To this day misses her 2005. When the lease was up on the 2014 we leased a Mazda CX9 that she hated. She told me she wanted a car that had the power and comfort of her 2005. When her lease was up it was the middle of 2021, and COVID was still in full swing. She needed a car so we bought a 2011 GL550 with 60,000 miles. It checks all the boxes but has the standard Mercedes issues too. I actually diagnosed the oil leak from the oil filter housing and cooler It has from your last video. I regret trading in the 2005.
@steveh6178
@steveh6178 3 місяці тому
So instead of bypassing that secondary air pump for $150, you wasted $5-10k on other automobiles??
@thethomasj1795
@thethomasj1795 3 місяці тому
@@steveh6178 It wasn't as simple as that. 10 years ago full repair to replace the pump was $2500. The bypass plate could have brought on other issues. The biggest issue for me was that when the check engine light came on the engine would de-rate itself and not go past 25 miles an hour. Clearing the code resolved the issue. However, since my wife drove the car it wasn't reasonable for her to pull over plug a scan tool in, and clear a code. She drove into Manhattan every day, she has clients and vendors all over the tri-state area. There were nights that she worked past midnight. It wasn't fair to her or safe for her and my young son to be driving around under those circumstances. She wanted a new car, which I was happy to provide for her. I should have held on to the 4runner for myself. The reason I didn't was for several reasons. I already had two cars. I had a BMW 3 series convertible, and I was 18 months into a lease on a Mercedes E-Class, AND my father had passed away several months earlier and I had his 2008 Lexus Es350. I tried to get her to take the Lexus, but she felt weird driving it. I had cars everywhere, and aside from the lease on the Benz, they were all paid for. Since the 4runner had the only major mechanical issue I traded it in. I held on to the Lexus for a while, but it was just sitting in the garage of my parent's house, or in my driveway. eventually, I sold it. I got tired of looking at it and it was holding me back from moving on from my father's death, which was unexpected and tragic. I hope this answers your question.

Hello. I own a GL with the offroad package and originally there are (plastic though) shieldings basically full length of the car. There is nothing exposed and the first front shielding ends after the gearbox. After that, there are two parts side shieldings on both sides and only the rear of the car is exposed actually (compressed air storage, rear mufflers, rear diff - in short, everything after the rear axle is exposed).
@davidkrumwiede446
@davidkrumwiede446 3 місяці тому
Two small inaccuracies: the engine is actually a 4.7, not a 4.5. And the air suspension component in the rear is the pressure reservoir, not the compressor. The compressor is in the right front corner.
@thethomasj1795

Right front wheel well. The airfilter runs along the top of the wheelwell and is often never replaced which can lead to premature failure of the compressor.

I'm actually really impressed with the Mercedes, the traction control was impressive, having the locker was icing on the cake. I'd be curious to see what the angles are, it looks to actually have pretty decent front ground clearance and approaching angle. I love to see Kase get involved in this and do an actual build on it, like James says it looks like it would be fairly simple to fabricate some skid plates.
@P6tu
@P6tu 2 місяці тому
At full height (offroad level3) the approaching angle with stock size tires is 36° at front and 30° at the back. I have fitted maximum size tires that fit (31,5' tires, 275 wide) and it is even better. The fording depth according to the factory booklet is 23,6 inches, but that is something that is scetchy and I have not dared to try it due to the battery being under the passenger seat and if the water would get in from the door, it would not be good... Regarding ground clearance - I don't know, how much it is, but is higher that stock Pajero or Landcruiser. Quite impressive actually.

3:28 In my opinion on snow permanent 4wd/awd has another big advantage: It takes way more torque to break traction. As the torque is divided by 4 anyways. So if you got 500NM it means each wheel gets 125NM. (disclaimer: if the ratios the manufacturer sets is 50:50) With a selectable 4wd it means until you put it into 4wd, the same 500NM only spread over 2 wheels meaning each wheel has to deal with 250NM. So each tyre has to deal with double the torque to transfer. If you try to accellerate or go uphil it takes way more to loose traction and is easier to drive. But it can also be seen as it's biggest disadvantage at the same time: with that being easier to drive it means most people don't realize when it's slippery and how slippery it is until they either need to stop or go around a corner. (At least that are my observations and personal experiences here in the alps)

But the cars normal situation traction control was still active, he didn't deactivate it. And it did it's job as intended. Although i have to say it took me a bit at first to understand why it has it's normal traction control + a-trac +diff locks. (A G wagon for example to my knowledge has no offroad mode button for the traction control because you got the all the diff locks anyways) But i guess it's the same as when other cars have a button or menu for putting the traction control into "offroad mode". I owned a 1999 ML430. It was great in bad weather. The MBZ ML/GL was made to deal with paved roads that go from snow to no snow to wet to dry road conditions in one trip. The 4Runner is either off road or on road mode. There is not comparison. If you live where I do, the snow is sometimes heavy, then your drive 10 miles and there is no snow (Lake McCumber area between Shingletown, CA and Viola, CA), you don't want a 4x4 that has to be stopped and put into 4wd mode. The ML/GL has the AWD drivetrain that you need. I have a 1983 GMC 2500, 4wd with the manual locking center differential and auto hubs up front. I put it in 4x4 when I get to snow/mud, the hubs spin and lock in, then when I get back onto pavement, I have to stop, take it out of 4wd, drive backwards a bit to unspin the auto hubs, then drive forwards. What a pain in the butt. But, it is an old 6.2 ltr Detroit diesel that i use for firewood that I get out of the national forest so it works great for what it use it for. The MBZ is a great vehicle for conditions that change while driving from on destination to the other without having to stop or "fiddle with" buttons or switches. Plus, getting on to the freeway, that 4.3 ltr, V8 got up and boogied. Try that on the 4 Runner with Logging trucks coming down I-5 from the Mt Shasta direction!!!!

Great video! People that go serious off-roading, and own specialized off-roader like Wranglers, 4runners etc., and drive sedans or pick-ups daily don't really know how far "soft" SUVs have gone in terms of AWD capabilities. While true off-road vehicles peaked between 1990s and 2000s, european premium manufacturers continued to work on their SUVs capabilities. Not every model of course, but biggest and most expensive ones certainly. Audi Q7/Q8, Merc GLE and GLS, and VW Touareg are pretty capable off-road, or in sllipery/snow conditions. Of course they are not nearly as capable as Wranglers, full size Nissans or Toyota off-roaders, but they rely on electronics, not so much on mechanics. And maybe it doesn't sound like "true" off-roading tools, their electronics AWD systems simply work. I would even say that in cases where you don't so much ground clearance, or attack angles, with proper tires they work more efficient then mechanical 4WD system. Especially automated AWD systems that can be used in snow and winter conditions.

4matic system. It is cross referencing the wheel speed sensors and then starts applying braking to the wheels that are spinning to mimic a limited slip differential. It is counter intuitive until you get used to it, when it starts to slip your reaction is to let off the throttle when in reality you need to give it more. Once you get it, it works very well.

Why did the fog light come one at 15:03
@neilangel321

@nirfz

For some time manufacturers used the fog lights for the cornering/turning light functions in low speeds. For high speeds the reflector inside the headlight moves left and right, for low speeds when you do tighter turns the movement of the reflector would not be enough, so they switched the fog light of the side you turn on and off. Later some manufacturers kept that, others have an additional reflector inside the headlight that moves into action or out of action and provides that turn light without needing the fog light. Oh, and yes it only does that when the lights are switched on. (which they were in this case)

One of the problems with a-trac and the Mercedes system is they both rely on input from the relatively delicate abs wheel speed sensors. I'd love to see the roller test repeated with a wheel speed sensor unplugged on each vehicle.

I own the same generation ML 550 - the wheel speed sensors are very protected and not likely to be damaged - this said I have had one fail due to a mechanic not putting the line back after working on the car and the wire rubbed through on the CV shaft - that makes the car smoke tyres on tar with just a half throttle pull away - would make offroading very difficult without engaging the diff locks

@Ezekiel499
@Ezekiel499 3 місяці тому
@@mattalexander4699 Since you know the wheel speed of the other three wheels and the speed of the output shaft from the transmission, you can calculate the wheel speed of the wheel with the broken sensor. You can also roughly calculate the torque going to the ground given the change in speed and the amount of fuel being consumed instantaneously. All would make for a more robust awd system that wouldn't leave you stranded or require lockers. Why flame me if you simply don't understand what I'm asking?

Depends which model year. The later ones after the facelift 2010-2012 are a lot more reliable with owners reporting a couple hundred thousand miles without anything going wrong especially on the V8 or the transmission. Of course airmatic struts are going to fail at 75K on each corner but that’s considered a consumable like tires, brakes.
