Not very good reporting. They didn't even explain what the actual danger was with the kid who died after coming up three times for help. Was it a sudden drop off in the depth? Was there some type of undercurrent? Other than stating that the water gets cold, and could get deep - neither of which was offered as the explanation for the kid's death - I didn't see what the point of the story was.

Sorry for her loss. The ocean isn't much different. People been swimming and drowning in water since the beginning of time. Practice saftey when swimming.

Also, quite a number of quarry lakes can be toxic as well. Remember, some of these ponds can contain arsenic, fertilizers, and toxic poisons which is something you don't want to jump into.

Friend of mine died diving into a quarry a week after we graduated from HS in 1964.

So many people have died in pools but that doesn't stop people from swimming

This seems less about quarry danger and more about the lack of ability to swim combined with ignoring universal water safety precautions.

I was in 7th grade when A really nice boy from school died in a very similar accident, that was 10 years ago now and it's so crazy cuz his life was over before it even began, so glad she's willing to speak up on this cause and spread awareness

Life is dangerous. Obviously no one wants to lose a loved one but 19 people over 50 years is not a lot. You can't stop people from taking a small risk when we take them everyday in one way or another.

What happened to her son was a tragedy. Quarries can be very dangerous, but they’re also usually some of the funnest places to swim. Back in the 70’s I used to swim at a place called Sherkston quarry in Ontario that had a submerged train at the bottom.

1) Don't dive from such a high elevation. Jump in straight like a pencil, feet first, legs closed, and butt cheeks clenched. 2) Beware of rocks when jumping into the water. 3) Don't swim long distances if you aren't a really strong swimmer. 4) If you get a cramp, just relax and float on your back until it's gone. The quicker you breathe in/out and tense up, the faster you will sink. 5) Stretch beforehand and stay hydrated. Otherwise there is a high possibility of getting a cramp. 6) Don't go swimming while high or drunk. 7) Have at least one strong swimmer in the group that can save you. 8) have at least one person in the group trained in CPR. 9) Use common sense. Follow most/all of these rules and you should be safe.

A friend of mine broke his neck and got paralyzed quadriplegic when diving into a quarry. His friend had to dive in and save him he was trapped under the water.

What I was able to gather from other sources it was from a cramp. Which could have happened in any source of water not just the quarry itself. Everyone just needs to be aware of their swim ability and take better safety precautions when swimming anywhere.

Enter at your own risk. Don’t tell people they can’t go in.

I live in Hawaii and people ( usually tourists ) drown all the time. No one blames the ocean.

We have a quarry near where I live. Not a lot of people know about it because it's on private property my uncle used to own. I go there every summer. I don't jump off the cliffs, but I do swim. It's beautiful.

The scary part is not the jump, the scary part is swimming across. That why you should try quarries that arent too far from land. It happened tto me similarly at a wave pool which I thought was easy to swim across but I ended up loosing most of my strength before getting to the other side and I was almost forced to ask for help to the lifeguards. I realized my girlfriend who crossed first didnt have this problem since she was a proffessional swimmer. Be aware of your limitations guys

I can confirm the “Blue Hole” as we call it or the quarry out here in South Jersey is very dangerous. We had a couple of people pass away from the big drops and freezing temperatures in the last few summers. Stay safe y’all💯

This is really helpful, because it still can be fun, like any activity, but I wasn’t aware of the many dangers. I also thank the comment section of this video for bringing up other important facts like having proper diving technique to not hurt yourself

Wow, my cousins grew up in Martin's Creek, PA, and they used to jump off a railroad bridge into the creek. That must be close by the quarry. sad.

It wasn't a quarry but i was in Gran Canaria once and i was walking into the ocean at the local beach (the Ocean was the Atlantic here) but they didn't put drop signs up and one minute you were walking and next minute you just dropped into extreme depth like that lady did. That just gave me flashbacks of that time back in the 00s

That's such a sad story. Terribly sorry for her loss. Didn't he just run out of stamina? You got to know your limits, wear a life vest first to build up the strength.

Had a friend who died in a quarry in 2016.

I can tell my experience, I jumped from a cliff on a quarry, I didn’t want to do it but my friends kept telling me to jump, like a “suicide in reverse”; I hit so hard the water I didn’t feel my legs and tried to swim with my arms only, soon one of the friends, who happened to be a traumatologist, came to the rescue. I was lucky nothing worse than a scary moment, and that was the first and last time I ever did this

when i was a kid me and a couple of friends where swimming in a lake, and we had life rafts on, i jumped off the island and went into the water, and fell into deep water, and was having trouble coming back up, it it wasn't for the life vest, pulling me up i might have drowned.

So how is this any different than going swimming at a lake?? Temperature inversions don’t differ just because it’s a quarry, the water temperature is going to drop after a couple feet of depth in a lake as well. Lakes get deeper unexpectedly, it’s an over-reach to deem a quarry unsafe. If you swim out from shore on a lake it’s no less dangerous if you don’t know your own swimming abilities and you should always consider swimming with someone close by.

And the big drop? I mean, if you can't swim and stay afloat, you should not go cliff diving or swimming. The biggest concern I have with quarries is the depth of the water. Cliff jumping is dangerous if its too shallow.

I grew up swimming in a quarry, diving from the highest point I could find and swimming across it. I remember being terrified of not making it across. I was only around twelve at the time. Only one of the many, MANY times I should have died as a youngster, I'm 60 now.

The biggest issue with quarries is the rapid temperature change in the body after jumping into the cold water, many people don't realize this is a problem, cold shock causes breathing issues and vasoconstriction which significantly increases the chances of drowning or passing out, water in quarries is colder compared to that in the ocean due to lower salt levels(more the salt, easier it is for the water to increase in temperature with heat applied). The second one is hitting something in the water which is not visible.

You have to love a country that does not require those planet destroying companies to remove their equipment. So competent.

The quarry by where I live literally has shopping carts, old bikes, old bridge structures and random debris littered from before it filled up with water. Kids that used to throw carts off the cliffs still go swimming in it every year and somebody dies EVERY year and it doesn’t stop anyone.

To avoid cramps and sudden shock from the water, we we were taught to take a quick body rinse at the showers. Never knew why as a kid but this explains it

It's the same concept with jumping off of bridges.

As heartbreaking as it must be for her, there's no logic to this way if thinking. The point of life isn't to be safe. Life is full of things that can seriously harm or kill us, and more people die swimming in the sea or rivers than will ever die swimming in flooded quarries. I grew up swimming in them and, as with most things, as long as you use common sense and don't overestimate your abilities then you'll be fine and can have a lot of fun.

All of us swam in a rock query when we were in high school. Just as many people die swimming in lakes and ponds here in Kansas. The problem is usually drinking while swimming when those accidents happen.

It don't matter if a I get a cramp in water, I'm fighting my cramp and get to surface, it's either deal with the pain and get to land or drown because it hurts to much.
