Now change the 'aid' to '-ade', by analogy with 'lemonade': you have 'glucosade'. Change the 's' to a 'z' and you have 'Glucozade' - a branded drink, not a medicine per se - which was how it was first marketed in 1927. It was indeed created by a Newcastle pharmacist, and sold as a health drink for the sick, particularly kids. Acquired by the pharmaceutical company Beecham's in 1938, its name was eventually changed to Lucozade - perhaps to disguise the fact that the 25% glucose content was really the only active ingredient. It wasn't until the 1980s that it began to be marketed as a sports drink. Gatorade came along in the USA much later - in 1965 - and was intended from its origins at the University of Florida to be a sports drink. It probably went nowhere in the UK because a) we don't have alligators, so the name has no resonance b) college football didn't exist here, and c) Lucozade was already well established, and was easily adapted to include electrolytes, etc. Interestingly, the first name considered for what became Gatorade was ... 'Gator-Aid'.
