She is so respectful. She is the mortician you would be lucky to have care for your body or the body of someone you love.

Morticians and embalmers are really the last stage of the healthcare system. Her points about using PPE and being responsible for and respectful of the person are consistent with hospital protocols.

I love how Six Feet Under is less realistic than Weekend at Bernie’s.

I worked in Aged Care for a lot of years and had the privilege of being with many people in their final moments. We’d lay them out (wash their body, dress them in clean nightwear and make them look as peaceful as possible). One gentleman released air when we rolled him, sounded like a low gasp. Scared the absolute crap out of us! We also used to chat to them during the process- we’d looked after these people, some had no family and we cared for them right until the end.

Considering the nature of morticians jobs they always seem very collected and we'll natured people.

I like her. She's very respectful and kind. She is the female version of Victor Sweeney, the mortician that WIRED brought onto their channel and people absolutely fell in love with. He pretty much went viral.

I have insane amount of respect for morticians and funeral priests. They take care of us when we are the most helpless, cleans us, suits us, hides our secrets. Im not sure about other countries but in my country, the main duty of them is to respect a body and whatever they see (something inappropriate like the first scene) should stay with them and no one should know.

I used to live above a funeral home/mortuary. The owner was a really great older guy, and he only had one assistant who was around his age, so when they had to move a very large client, they asked me to help them wheel her up the ramp and into the back of the funeral home. As we were wheeling her up the ramp, her hand came out from under the sheet covering her and patted against my groin. I calmly said, "No, thank you, ma'am" and tucked her hand and arm back under the sheet.

I'm in construction and have done a lot of work in hospitals, including hospital morgues. We had a very specific list of do's and don'ts for working in the morgue. Most of them were common sense. For example, we had to wear sterile PPE at all times, maintain negative atmospheric pressure, use HEPA filtration, etc. We were also not permitted to eat, drink, chew gum, etc, in the morgue. Nor were we permitted to make jokes of any kind or even swear while in the morgue itself. I don't know whether it was policy specific to the hospital, or if it was some sort of odd law on the books. But they were very strict about maintaining "an atmosphere of solemn dignity" in the vicinity of dead bodies.

No one I know, have worked with, or has been a Funeral Director picking up a body has EVER treated that person with disrespect. If they did, they would not last long in their profession. Even in the early morning hours, our Funeral Directors picked up the deceased in full suits, shirts and ties. The dead were always referred to as Mr, Mrs etc etc. Dignity.

At my friend's funeral 2 years ago, his right eye was juuuust slightly open, and I could see the light coloured shine of the eye cap. It wasn't overt; you had to be looking at him from the right angle. It looked like he was doing the thing where you pretend to be asleep, but you kind of open one eye a slit and peek through the lashes? Except he didn't look like he was sleeping. It was weird to see my friend, who was only a year or 2 older than me, who I'd met at age 14, like that. I kind of wish they'd not had a viewing, and instead of embalming him, had a green burial. But, it was his Mom's choice. It's for her, not me, and certainly not for my friend. He was far beyond caring. RIP Link. And: RIP Ben, my other old-time bro who just passed on Sunday October 17th, 2021. I don't know what they're going to do with his body. Probably cremation. I can't stand the idea of his body, every part of him that I loved dearly, besides his soul, which I feel is very much alive, still, is cold and smelly and blue right now. When he and I were teenagers, we made a weird pact. Whomever died first, the other got their skull. We even wrote up documents on looseleaf, but we both have long since lost them. That's for the best. I love his family, and while I'd love to have his skull, it would deeply disturb his loved ones, even though they know him well; they knew what a weirdos we were together, and separately. Also, it would be a logistical, expensive nightmare. There's no way I could do that myself, get the flesh off his face, I mean, so a mortician would have to be hired. Probably a specialist. I'd probably need a notarized document stating that as his final wish, updated yearly, and even then, he has a wife now, so that trumps it all. I can't believe I'm thinking about this so soon after he's gone. I wish I'd died first, because he would do a really cool job decorating my skull. The dude is a fantastic artist. Okay, I'm rambling about my deceased friends in a UKposts comment. Sorry, guys. It's been a tough couple of years.

I say that, because, I am a retired 91W U.S. ARMY COMBAT MEDIC, and, after 48 years, I am still working as a Surgical Technician, in spite of having had a Whipple Resection back in May. The thing I appreciate the most in your video, is how you respect, and protect the deceased. My supervisor, former Army as well, refers to that, as "Extreme Ownership ". I look at my patients as though they are family, and I will protect them as such. So, thank you for your professional approach. By the way, I, too, have only heard the term "Angel Lust". Even if I had ever seen it, I would keep it to myself. What happens in the Operating Room, stays in the Operating Room. I have seen a lot of body bags. I liked her analysis a lot. It made me feel a little less afraid of the dead. But i have to say, they don't look like they are sleeping, they look dead.

Her way of speaking is so soothing that is almost ASMR level. Very professional and respectful. I have a great amount of respect for morticians and similar roles, they do tasks that most of us are unable to handle and allow us to give dignity to passed loved ones so we can give them a goodbye and hopefully remember them at a state that looks better than if we were to have to handle the bodies of the deceased ourselves

I spent several years in the industry and she’s right on. I’ll address a few of them, not all of them because I don’t have time nor does anyone care: I’ve never seen an erection on a decedent. Also, I’ve never left a decedent in the car. Someone has to be with the decedent who works for the funeral home. So, for a long trip, two funeral staff will go so one person can go into a store to get snacks and stuff. And yeah, the noise from the lungs is true. The lack of PPE is common, sadly. The eyes in the floater scene stuck out to me too, they’re too intact and the person in general is too intact for water. Love that she pointed out degloving and skin slip! Also, I was so thrilled to watch the mouth suture scene and the eye caps because that’s so accurate and a nice portrayal overall. Glad to see a funeral director/embalmer doing one of these!

My father died with his mouth wide open. His two caregivers tried to close it, but they couldn’t. The workers at the mortuary somehow managed it. I don’t know how.

Just want to point out that one of those scenes (The Dead Don't Die) is from a rather eccentric, satirical, zombie film, and the mortician in question is in fact not even human, she's just pretending (poorly). Whoever picks these for her should do a little better job with the context or something.

I delivered caskets for 6 years and most of the time would be delivering it through or into the prep room and lets just say almost unanimously I would prefer to not deliver to the funeral homes inside the city limits of detroit. all of the FH that were shut down for there practices I had been in many many times. However she is more indicative of most funeral directors/embalmers that I ran into.

To be fair, Nate had just started to work at the funeral home and didn't care about doing the job properly. That's why he had no problem with leaving a body in the van to hang out with Brenda.

My brother picks up the dead and takes them to the mortuary. He picked up a old man with a death grip on his willy. He was totally professional but his xo worker was not and told my whole family.

Wow, the mortician who found the lady alive must’ve had a fright 😅. I’ve seen the eyelid thing which freaked me out but I didn’t know about the mouth tie…ooh that made me more nauseous. I don’t really get the point of embalming. I assume it’s just for the viewing which seems strange to me cos then the body is buried with all of these gross things in it which slow down decomposition and prolong the quality of the body for no reason which sounds unnatural and pointless 🤔.

My mother passed away at home, after a long fight with metastasized breast cancer. The service that transported the body didn't show up right away. As I recall it took about 45 minutes. During that time, air escaped the lungs and passed through the vocal cords, causing the corpse to make a low "growling" sound. I'd heard this could happen, so wasn't terribly surprised by it. Some of my siblings weren't aware and were very shaken by it! I use "corpse", and referred to lungs and vocal cords because, at that point, mom wasn't there any more. It was just a body. I respected that and treated it accordingly, but as I said, mom had left the room by then.

i'm not sure why, but I could listen to her speaking for hours and hours and hours. Love her voice so much.

You should have reviewed "The Revenant (2009)...not the DeCaprio one. If you haven't seen it, it's a great dark comedy

My late nurse bestie says it happens (passing gas) and a mean trick they played on student nurses was to have them transfer someone who died from their bed to the morgue

I thought that Rigor Mortis was a temporary thing. With weekend at Bernie's, it sure seems to be about comedy more than reality anyway. That "growling" noise would scare most people for sure. Even this mortician says so. One of the old CSI shows had said that using vaporub the mentholated stuff helps with decomp smells overwhelming a person, and smiling, even fake smiling can help you from gagging. I wonder if there is any truth to any of it. The shows like American horror story are out for shock value, so, I'd be shocked if any of it seems real at all. About gas buildup, I'd seen on an old show called "Bones", that a corpse had exploded from gases built up in the body. I wonder IF that could actually happen. I would LOVE an opinion about the shows like original CSI Vegas and CSI Miami, where bodies were seriously supposed to be real, not like in these comedy situation movies, and shock value shows. But, those shows are sometimes 15 years old or older, so, most younger people may have never seen them. I heard about that woman in Michigan being alive and almost embalmed. She had a disease where she couldn't speak. Her mom was a nurse and told paramedics she was still alive, but, they didn't use an EKG machine to check for a heartbeat, and despite her moms pleas the SOB's insisted she was dead. She ended up dying after all of it, despite being briefly saved. That really angers me SO much. imagine being that woman and her family must be really messed up about it. I enjoyed the video, really interesting stuff.

Few remarks: First of I don't think anyone would regard Weekend At Bernies as realistic. It was kind of funny that she gave it a fairly high rating compared to many other rated scenes. Angel Lust doesn't only happen to people that were hanged, but it can happen to all people that died instantly. In the past this also occurred for example also after execution by firing squad. Bloated body can release gas, but it cannot fart. Either the gas remains trapped or at some point the muscles will relax and the pressure is released gradually. I have a friend that worked at a hospital in NYC during the covid pandemic and actually bodies were placed in all kind of large bags because the amount of dead people exceeded al expectations and bodies were piled up in refrigerated trucks They have even used biohazard waste bags! So, she is correct that normally transparent bags aren't used, but near May/June 2020 'normal' wasn't anywhere to be found. Eric made a joke that NYC was finally taking it first nap since 400 years because pretty much everybody stayed at home and the streets were empty. I'm pretty sure the story that they've used vacuum machines at 'wrap' bodies was made up story (or at least I hope so). Some bodies are donated and in some cases can be used by artists. For instance when I still lived in The Netherlands I once visited the 'Body Worlds' museum were plastinated bodies are on display. I also heard of people that wanted to be transformed in an art piece as a way to be remembered for ever...

This means that even after we die there are still so many things have to do.

I'm not so much for embalming ; although I understand those that prefer it or just assume that's how things are done ... I viewed my grandfather in his casket at his church service / funeral ... He didn't look like he was sleeping ( he was embalmed ) ; & in epiphany , I realized HE was no longer there / It's a good thing ... I'm glad he didn't look like he was just sleeping ... It's good to know they've moved on I think it's important to see a dead body of a loved one , if you can handle it .. Especially if you come to that conclusion ... That the LIFE / the personality / the essence of that person is no longer there ...

Crazy question. As a mortician, do you or other people get a lingering sense of death around you. You know how when you work at, like, pizza hut, there's a smell that comes home with you and you have to spend hours scrubbing to get it out of you and your clothes. Have you had others say, "what's that smell?"

The funeral industry is so medieval.

I didn't know that... people suture the deceased to make them presentable to a group of people, this is new to me. In our faith we practice that the deceased should be handled with as much care as someone who is very ill, even gentler than that because we believe they feel everything amplified and are very scared. The adult family members clean them and have them wear comfortable cloth pieced for the dead and a last group prayer for them to the Almighty and then respectably put in a soil, a plain grave where they will become one with the soil. We believe to take nothing with us, no expensive cloths or jewelry or decorative coffins because we came to being with nothing and we pass on with nothing except for humanity which would be portrayed in the for of a few pieces of clothing to cover our body of soil.
