This is probably super wrong but likely he's just trying to prove he is devout. My theory is that he's so poor he covers the holes in his shirt with pages, but idk haha

It's most likely his way of wearing "sacred vestments" to symbolize that he views himself as a holy man delivering the word of the almighty. He doesn't have holy clothing like a traditional priest so he is making his clothes holy by covering them with pieces of scripture.

I didn’t have a clue, so Googled it. There’s no definitive answer, to be honest. This is one statement that made the most sense….. “So in summary I think the Bible pages are there to demonstrate his belief that he is one of God's servants.
