Just a few weeks before beating Federer at Wimbledon and stopping his title run in 2008, Nadal completely destroyed Federer in a Grand Slam final where Roger only won 4 games throughout the entire match.

I always appreciated how Rafa didn't make a massive celebration when he won. He knew it had been a humiliating experience for Roger and he didn't rub it in. Another sign of his grace and class. Federer was a little off this day, but Nadal was just extraordinary. Not for the last time at the French Open, he took great players and made them look ordinary. Djokovic and Wawrinka, among others, have had this experience too.

what's so amazing about Rafa at RG is that we can cite so many matches and/or years there where he might have played better. IMO it very well could be the 2020 final vs. Novak where Rafa was even better. Simply because the way he dismantled Novak in straight sets, which as we know by now is a significantly more formidable opponent for Rafa at this tournament. Roger has played Rafa there what....6 times? And never took more than 1 set off Rafa. Has lost in straight sets 2 of 6 times. Novak can at least claim 2 wins there vs. Rafa, as well as pushing Rafa to the brink in 2013, and 2 other great 4 set matches in 2012 & 2014.

''I just really didn't think I was going to win''. Extraordinary really, but you can see it in the body language. 2011 final was perfect example. Fed was playing unbelievable that year. He'd just beaten prime Djoker in the semi. He was 5-2 up in first set against Rafa and playing perfect tennis. He had a set point on Rafa's serve but missed a dropshot by an inch and Rafa held. Next game, serving for the set, Roger makes a couple of errors and is broken. Immediately you can see the body language change - he get's tight, starts missing, he shrinks into his shelf. The momentum has completely shifted. Rafa breaks again at 5-5. The set is over....so is the match. Tennis....the brain game.

He may not even have considered playing or participating in RG or Wimbledon that year if he hadn't recovered. 2. My man Wivo never click-baits. He is the best tennis content creator on UKposts. The work he puts in his videos & his subscribers is a testament to that. Oh, and 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 *is humiliating* for the #1 player at that time. was one of Roger's worst performances in Majors finals, if not the worst, at least I've ever seen, clearly apathetic and lacking confidence against the Spaniard, not to mention that this happened in 2008, the year the Swiss lost to Nole in the semi in Australia and was already in a decline in his career, so much so that 2 months later he was defeated again by Rafa, but this time in the final in London, but we cannot take the merits of Rafa, 2008 was one of the best of the career of the Spanish, managed to be champion of RG, Wimbledon and Olympic medalist, getting in China the gold medal, was the only one of the big 3 to be able to do it in the same year.

it's interesting how Federer here was in a position like, for example, Mike Tyson's opponents during his prime years - they were defeated and beaten right there from the start, psychologically speaking. You could see in their eyes they've lost before even entering the cage and, during the match, didn't even wanna fight. They surrendered their will and the game was over. All of the above happened to Federer in that final vs Rafa. With his own words, he just didn't believe he can win, and that's obvious in the way he looked, moved and played. If anything, RG final 2021. proved one fact - you have to be ready running 5-6 hours to outplay Rafa in his own backyard, being 120% "in" during the whole match.

Nadal, Federer & Djokovich at their best were all unbelievable players, I doubt it's possible to resolve who was the better player at their peak. The debate over who is the most successful is unresolvable until they retire. If Federer somehow wins 2 more French Opens or Nadal 2 more Wimbledons then things may become clearer. I expect Djokovich to end up with the most Grand Slam titles but hey, he never won an Olympic Singles Gold.

Roger on this day was totally off his game and was finding his way back after getting mononucleosis in the off season. Roger didn't believe on that day either. But on the other hand, 2008 might of seen Rafa's highest ever level of play maybe alongside 2010. Interesting stat. Since 2015, Roger only lost to Rafa once and beat him 7 times I think. Makes you wonder if Roger could have beaten Rafa in his prime with the racket he has now along with his 2017 backhand. Both total legends but the difference between these two guys was between the ears. Rafa knew he could beat Roger in the early years by just wearing him down on the backhand side whereas Fed didn't have a clear cut go to tactic.

Nadal is no doubt the most dominant player on Clay than anyone else has been on any surface. Before him, I would have said this about Sampras on grass courts. This match didn’t mark the end of Federer’s prime though. He won 4 out of the next seven grand slam tournaments (08 US, 09 RG, 09 Wimbledon, 10 Aus Open) and became the no 1 player again during this period. Federer was also in the finals of the other 3 GS tournaments in that span.

honestly he wasn't playing bad here at all. he has been more off his game and beat opponents multiple times. This is more about Nadal then Fed. Fed hit some crazy good shots in this match, yet Nadal was able to not only return them but return them in a way that put Fed on the back foot. I think thats why Fed got obviously down on himself as the match went on. Its one thing to be getting beat when you are making mistakes or not playing well, you always feel like if you just get it together you can get back in the match. Its a whole other thing if you feel like you are playing pretty well, yet your opponent isn't even stressed.
