The Ocean Cleanup started removing plastic from the ocean a decade ago. But most of that plastic comes from rivers, so it started building solar-powered river cleaners to catch garbage before it goes out to sea.

Truly.....the only way to stop the plastic is to go strictly after the manufacturers. Have them switch their products to NOT plastic. Use biodegrade options instead. Then they could also just penalize companies that use plastic.

This is a great organization, and we can all do our part to help clean up the planet. Join a clean-up group, adopt a highway, or at the very least pick up litter when we see it. Whenever I go for my daily walk, I carry a litter bag so that if I find trash on my walk, I pick it up and throw it away when I return home. When I'm going shopping, if I see litter, I pick it up and throw it away. All that trash could end up in rivers and streams and end up in lakes and oceans. Any effort, big or small, is helpful. Educating young people is helping the next generation.
@ItchyKneeSon

@@Lori-lp6uc Right. In Japan, an island country where they don't have the physical space to dump everything in a landfill, they burn most of it. It's actually a very clean country, but it's quite difficult to find a public trash receptacle. A lot of people bring a plastic bag in the car and bring home any trash they produce when they're out. And recycling programs are quite strict. In the rural town where I lived, there was 1 hour a month, 8-9 a.m. on a Sunday, in which carefully-separated recyclables could be dropped off in the community center parking lot with various stations that were manned by community volunteers on a rotation. It's a nice system and the collectivist culture promoted cooperation by all. There will always be 'stragglers', though. My time there gave me a new, deeper perspective on social cooperation. Now, living in the States again, it bothers me even more when I see someone flick a cigarette on the ground or let a wrapper blow away in the wind. And to hear people complain about recycling, when all you have to do is throw everything into a bin in bulk and it magically disappears. Granted, a good percentage of it gets dumped in a landfill anyway. But I don't think that's a reason to stop trying altogether. We really take our relatively comfortable, luxurious lifestyles for granted. Each person has to feel compelled to take responsibility for their own waste. But I feel that the culture of individualism leads to us favoring our own time & resources over others'. There's so much potential left on the table...

Any professional even taking a short glance at the field should realize that waiting for the perfect solution never works. Invent, test, improve. That’s how engineering and development has always gotten better and this is no different. The help that the Ocean Cleanup provides is so many times better than the potential harm it causes by leaving all the trash out there.

I was a hard construction supervisor for a large landscape company and one of the biggest eye openers for me was the plant pots..., they don't get recycled, they aren't made from recycled plastic and they are used once and thrown into landfill. I was truly horrified. In the 10 years I worked in the industry I did everything I could to give away the pots and recycle as many as i could (not even a drop in the ocean) but until the industry comes up with a better way this is just a horrifying waste. I am dumbfounded that nobody has come up with a compostable pot for seedlings and smalller plants and a "profitable" way to recycle the bigger ones. Surely it has to be cheaper to clean them than make new ones. 😢

You have to understand other Countries are not just as well off. In order for this to happen, a lot of factors are needed, DR main export is Cocoa beans(9th largest), as well tourism, not a lot of wealth being generated... You should really understand what the real world is like first.

I studied Industrial Design and engineering in university and 'cradle to grave' design was taught for about 5 minutes in total! This is the process of designing being aware how it's first used to how it's disposed of. This needs to be taught throughout ALL product design in every sector of design because if the person designing the product thinks of the end result then plastic would leave the consumer world fast! People are not at fault for what's available, designers are!

We could all help him in this quest! Start picking up trash, wherever you see it even if it isn’t yours. Start taking reusable thermoses and cups and straws that we can clean and wash and use again after year.. When I think back to old school, A&W used to have porcelain mugs and glasses, and they wash them after every use. Why can we not adopt this old school approach again in every fast food, place all over the world? That’s what the government should start funding bringing back old school ways of doing things that made sense and that worked .

Time to demand all countries to have recyling on plastic bottles. All countries in Scandinavia has this now, where we all deliver the empty bottles back to the shop and get back money for it. Over 90% of sold bottles get returned in Norway. Which means it does not end up in nature and can be reused! It is a SHAME that the rest of the world cant handle this!

@@thekraken1173 Yes, its kinda weird the total amount of oil usage is still going up. But there is huge difference in who sells the oil on the market. I rather buy oil extracted on more eco friendly methods. And where the money goes into funding a whole country. Instead of large private oil companies, where all the money goes into pockets of rich people. In Norway the money is used better, and actually spent on saving the forest and eco friendly investments. As long as the worlds still runs on oil, it has to come from someone. So better Norway than oil barons which support terrorism and child labor.

From what I can see by reading the comments, a lot of people are pushing the blame onto a specific group of people. Some are also suggesting rather simple solutions that seem great on paper but probably don't actually work like how originally imagined. There's a saying that goes something like, "Usually the first idea you think of to solve a problem, is probably not the best idea to actually solve it." If you don't believe that saying, then how about this? In the video, it is stated that the ocean cleanup crew would clean the Pacific garbage patch in 5 years. Now in hindsight, we can tell that was overly optimistic. So, they thought about other potential solutions to remove plastic from the ocean. They had the idea to prevent plastic from entering the ocean at the sources, rivers. Collecting plastic from the rivers wasn't the first solution they thought of, and it probably won't be the last either. This is just my opinion, but I think that there isn't one singular solution to this problem. Some people think the problem lies with the consumers, some people think the problem lies with the designers/manufacturers, and I would argue that political factors are also at play. I think that it's amazing that, despite all of these complex factors on why it became like this, many people around the world are trying to help come up with and implement solutions to this and many other problems.

@thekraken1173
@thekraken1173 Рік тому
There are no viable eco friendly alternatives to consumer plastics. Sad reality. For example if we try to replace consumer plastics with natural rubber, a lot of rainforests will be cut down for monoculture plantations. We are already running out of sand for glass making. We can’t replace plastic bottles with glass bottles. Paper and carboard products are a faster degrading material, but it will be eco friendly only if we don’t cut natural forests for paper. And forests will be cut down for paper plantations. However, we can choose between bad and worse. And plastics are definitely worse in my opinion. It is a bad material as well. While degrading it releases a lot of microplastic particles. I hate the fact that everything is made of plastic. I miss good old quality products that last decades. We should replace plastic injection machines with metal stamping machines. Aluminum stamping is the only realistic alternative to plastics for consumer plastics. However it is definitely not completely eco friendly, but it is more eco friendly.
@joe2249
