Very happy when I saw “the place beyond the pines” one of the greatest if not the greatest movie about fathers and sons, and how the sins of the fathers affecting both sons. I got a tattoo from this movie I bought a dirt bike cause of this movie and an all time line “IF YOU RIDE LIKE LIGHTNING, YOUR GONNA CRASH LIKE THUNDER” also the music is 10 out of 10

So I have some info on place beyond the pines! I helped for styling part of the shoot! It was shot entirely chronologically. So Ryan Gosling was only on set for under a month and his time on set never overlapped with Dane Dehaan as the characters never really meet on screen outside of infancy. Ryan Gosling actually simulated robbing about 5 banks for this role. The banks were warned and they hired extras, but the instructions were genuinely: "go in, rob the bank and convince everyone to get down and give you the money, do whatever you need to without hurting anyone, and get away" so a lot of the acting from bank tellers was genuine as they didn't rehearse or know when it would be happening on the day. Like the teller who fails to throw the backpack over the plexiglass, that was not in the script, it was just a failed throw, same for Gosling's vocal cracks screaming in the bank, those are just genuine vocal cracks. Same thing goes for when Dehaan robs the pharmacy. The pharmacy and employee was hired and told someone would try to sneak in and steal something and that the pharmacist should act how they would if they caught someone normally. the getaway on the bicycle is authentic too. The entirety of the idea of the movie actually came from Ryan Gosling telling Derek Cianfrance that if he had to commit a crime, he would want to rob a bank, and he had an idea for how to get away with it using the motorcycle and the moving truck. Cianfrance happened to be writing this script at the time so they married the ideas! Another interesting note on Gosling, his total wardrobe for the film consisted of a total of either 12 or 13 items only! Only one of those items was from a fashion brand (the dirty white denim pants are from Ralph Lauren), everything else he wears on screen was thrifted!

@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ There are some other fun facts from the special features as well if you have the blu ray. I know a lot of it was shot pretty genuinely like gosling really got processed into jail. Some of the face tattoos were Gosling’s idea, he then didn’t like how it looked on camera, but Cianfrance said that it fit for the character to have tattoos he regrets with the carnival lifestyle of traveling around and generally being reckless. Schenectady is also a cool reference, that’s the name of the city where a lot of it was filmed and takes place and that it translates loosely to “Beyond the pines” in the local native language of the Mowhawk people! I agree it’s a super underrated movie considering everything from the cast to the movie! I’m appreciative to have been apart of it and if you have any questions about the styling, I can do my best to help!

"Thief" (1981) was Michael Mann's theatrical debut. He already had written and directed the 1979 made-for-TV movie "The Jericho Mile," a prison drama.

Thief to me is an unofficial prequel to HEAT, I like to imagine the James Cann character being the one who mentored Neil and Chris in prison. Who told them do not attach yourself to anything that you can't walk out on in 30s flat when you spot the Heat around the corner.
@habovay3
@habovay3 2 місяці тому
@lv2465 Ironic how, in the end, it was the reckless and irresponsible Chris, not the wise and cautious Neil, who wound up obeying the walk-out rule and successfully escaped.

Just discovered your channel, great stuff. Glad to see Master and Commander getting some love - it's one of my all time favourite movies. So historically authentic and those action scenes are just stunning - the actors and extras were all taught to sail the ship (which was real) so in any shot the crew are actually performing their ship-related tasks). Probably the best sound effects/mixing of any film too - if you ever want to show off your surround sound system, this is the movie to listen to.

I like that Ryan and Eva are dating as they film The Place Beyond the Pines. In a rare interview about her relationship with Ryan, she says that there is "some of that magic" in some of the scenes. The scene of them with the baby and bike feels so genuine for a reason.

AWESOME list guys, sooo many of my favs are on this list, just about every time you mentioned a movie I said YES, and the others I'm gonna check out for sure!!!! I'm a runner and do hours every day, so listening to you guys was just great to help the kms go by, thanks so much!! I just wanna say that We Need to Talk About Kevin is decidedly less impressive when you know the book (a typical criticism I know). Yes the movie is extremely well made and the acting is outstanding, but the it's quite "black and white" compared to the book which is much much more nuanced with a mother who never wanted a baby in the first place and resented it from the outset and put all sorts of expectations on the baby to "improve" her marriage, AND a father who prefers to put his head in the sand rather than face and deal with reality!! Am looking forward to checking out more of your podcasts!!

I really, really LOVED The Place Beyond the Pines. I found it on HBOMAX when I was bored one day during the pandemic I think!!?? I remember how impressed I was with Emory Cohen. Then, I realized he was Tony in Brooklyn. From that moment I became a real fan of Cohen. So talented. Also, Eva Mendes was so good in this. She starts out as a very young mom and in the same movie plays a middle aged mother who had been through hell and back after a lot of unfortunate events. Every actor in this was just so good.

Jake Speed was one of my favorite Low Budget "B" Film... Strangely I could tell the difference in terms of production at 9' years old. This movie however was amazing and John Hurt was an excellent arch criminal and long before V or Lord of the rings. put this one on your watch list and power off your phones guys. Thank me later!

The Assassin of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is probably the most underrated film ever. No one talks about it. Robert Deakins did the cinematography and it's mostly accurate to the real life story. Every actor killed it too. It's a beautiful and tragic film

Bowie: He refused a CBE in 2000 and later a knighthood in 2003. The 68-year-old reportedly explained: “I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for."27 Jan 2023

I'd like to recommend a film in the category of "most underrated film in a franchise". And that franchise is Godzilla. Did you know there's a Godzilla movie with kung-fu fighting, katana-wielding, cloaking, teleporting, motorcycle-riding superheroes? Look up a trailer for GODZILLA: FINAL WARS. You'll see very quickly that the creators of this movie wanted to make a living Anime with Godzilla in it. When Godzilla isn't on screen it feels like watching Final Fantasy: Advent Children.

(In the "reactor" community, these are rare to non-existent) In The Name of the Father (1993; Daniel Day Lewis, Emma Thompson) Salt (2010; Angelina Jolie, Liev Shreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor) The Commitments (1991; Dir. Alan Parker) Cop Land (1996; Stallone, Keitel, DeNiro, Liotta) Sleepers (1996; Brad Pitt, Jason Patrick, Minnie Driver, DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman) Wag The Dog (1997; DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman Conspiracy Theory (1997; Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Patrick Stewart) Thunderheart (1992; Val Kilmer, Graham Greene)

Get Rumble Fish on there lads. The Outsiders and Rumble Fish are a great double header. I agree with pretty much all of this list. Apocolypto is the best chase move ever committed to screen. Warrior? WOW! Battling brothers never get’s old. Color of Money made me and the lads all want to be pool hustlers (Some of us did). I’m getting old now and I’m forgetting the list as I write this. 😆 I’d stick Near Dark on there too. Also I think Tron Legacy was the last mainstream Hollywood movie involving a positive Father and Son story. Okay one more…. I pick Rob Roy over Braveheart any day. 😁
