I've always loved images of earth from space. This was an attempt at recreating that favorite scene of our planet. This vase was made from blue resin, cotton, willow wood, standing 11 inches tall and 9 inches turned on the lathe and finished with Teak oil.

Dan I truly appreciate your work. You are truly inspirational, I have always enjoyed woodworking and have found it to be quite fascinating and difficult to achieve. I thankyou for sharing your beautiful art work with us. The last time I had a change to work with wood was when I was in high school in the 9th grade, which is now over 58 years ago. Doc Dan, I truly love what you do. Myself, I'm retired Law Enforcement turned back to woodworker. I like experimentation in woodworking, and you take it to a whole different level. I love it. Particularly because you have done a lot that is very close to what I have been thinking about trying. You've blazed the trail and given me hope I may be on the right track. I was blown away to come across this project, because I had imagined it, and here you've done it. Well done, sir. And the best part is that it's for an absolutely awesome cause. Thank you, and keep it up.

This is so gorgeous. You are truly a consummate artist. For your clouds, I can envision mixing up some white UV resin to pre-soak the clouds and cure them with a UV torch after they're placed on the globe. That way you can see what your finished clouds will look like. You can add more or even just paint on more of the translucent white UV resin as needed. Then you can do your second pour and everything will stay put and retain its color. Your pouring method with the plastic, rice, and bags is genius.

Thank you so much! What uv resin do you recommend?
@flamingomtn

@@artgivinghope I only use small amounts on an occasional basis so I don't have a favorite. The bottle I have now is Unokki brand, Hard Type 105G. I'm sure there are others that work just as well. And they're all quite compatible with pouring resin. I learned this from a YT creator called jedrek29t.
@artgivinghope
@artgivinghope Рік тому
Cool. Thank you. I'm in the middle of a project now using uv resin and have really struggled with the brand I have because it will only cure very thin layers. I'd love to find one that can cure in nice thick layers...

Good day Dan. Just stumbled across your Globe turn and had to watch, Outstanding work sir. You had mentioned an issue with trapped bubbles that jostling around might help. I had thought the same several years ago when i started stabilizing wood. I fabricated a steel table and attached an electric concrete vibrator with speed control to it, the results were better than i expected. Your observation will make me revisit this process with casting for some problem items i could never seem to overcome with air pocket issues. Hope you find this helpful in someway and I'm happy to share info if needed. Keep that creative brain turning & happy casting sir :)

I think it looks great! Even if parts of the northern hemisphere are a little bit wonky. 😁 A thought about the cotton balls. If you spray paint them white, and then let them dry. Then coat them in resin before you submerge the whole thing. It might not only help your clouds stand out more, but it might help with not trapping those bubbles as well.

I’ve been getting an idea about an engineering technique that might help with the dreaded bubbles, which sometimes even occur or don’t make it out in the pressure bath. I used to work for a structural engineering firm, and learned a few cool tricks. The boss was building a house almost completely made of poured concrete. To do that, they build plywood boxes that fit the shape of the wall or floor. The front and back of the boxes are connected by long bolts that run through the empty space until the concrete is poured. Of course they’re working with straight edges where you are working with rounded shapes, but, I think a variation could be come up with. What they do, once the concrete is poured (imagine the concrete as epoxy). Once the frames are filled, they run rubber hoses through the concrete in the spaces and hook them up with some kind of motarized system that makes the rubber hoses vibrate, which releases the bubbles. Of course at that scale it takes all day, and they have to pull out the rubber tubes before the concrete hardens. For your smaller scale (even though it’s large scale to you for your projects) it should be simple enough to create a flat, or even concave piece of wood or metal to hold the piece) vibrating tray for your piece to sit on and get vibrated a while (and the time needed would need to be calculated by the time constraints of the epoxy, before sending it to the pressure tank for finer detail. It might also require less time in the pressure tank as well. It’s just a thought. Do you think that might work? Another question I wanted to ask (and bear in mind I have never worked with epoxy) is would it be possible to vibrate one color of epoxy just to a certain point, and would the epoxy dry a little during that process? If it does, would that make it possible to add another color of epoxy, say, in going up toward the first color, say near top of something like this vase? And would the first layer of color still be slightly wet enough so that the second color could mix with it just a little bit, so the colors could blend a bit just near the join area (or slightly more, if that might look nicer than having a sharp line between the colors? This was inspired by the ocean area of your vase when I was imagining various shades of blue and maybe some green, perhaps representing tides of different temperatures creating a bang of colors blending. Or for various tidal directions crossing other tidal paths. Some interesting color combinations and additions could be created that way. One more thought, when making earth globes, have you ever thought of adding some burl layers to the mountainous areas of the planet? I’ve seen several videos of people painting burls that way - only the lower areas of the burls, and not covering all the burl, because the brown tops of the brown burls could evoke the barrenness of the dirt and rocks above the tree line. I’ve seen burls be done in lightly painted colors of epoxy like light icy blue or blue-green, which add so much interest. Thank you for letting me share my thoughts. When I watch videos like this, my mind starts exploding with ideas, and I like to share them. Best of luck to you. Your work is beautiful.

These are some great ideas.. I've toyed with all of them in one way or another. I tried vibration early on and it didn't seem to do the trick. Ib think the mixed resin is too viscous compared to water in concrete. That being said a few bubbles will get trapped sometime and it would certainly be nice to be able to shake the project violently or at least be able to move it around in various directions... To solve the random bubbling issue you talked about, try pre-de-bubbling the resin before using it. That is, mixing creates bubbles to begin with, so, vacuum the resin before the pour so the after poor vacuum has less to air to vacate, AND, having fewer bubbles allows the resin to pour more evenly, lessening the amount of bubbles created during the pour so the post-pour vacuum doesn't have to work so hard. I hope that helps.

Man, that looks like it was a Ron of work Dan. Firewood pile wood is quite handy. Our little town has a burn pile where people take their cuttings etc to be burned. I regularly scrounge around in the pile. Found some nice treasures. Canada huh? 🤣🤣 looks like you had a few islands try to fall off too. Beautiful piece Dan.

I'm still waiting for the day you announce that you are gonna take an apprentice! I got first dibs. It's beautiful. I think it turned out fantastic. I often see turners use tape where the wheels of the stabilizer touch. I'd have to go back to see what they use to be sure, but it looks like painters tape and maybe electrical tape if memory serves. Could be helpful...of course whenever I see tape being stuck to the piece I think of adhesive residue, but it doesn't seem to be an issue and after seeing the impromptu equator your stablizer tried to give...well, anyway, could be something worth considering. 😁 Not only do I really enjoy your channel and work, I really support your motivation behind it. I'm looking forward to the next one.

an idea that might help for the next globe try. when making the globes for schools and such, I have seen that they cut and piece the images along the longitude lines to wrap them around to fit. maybe that could help keep distortions down??
