@@jout738 They played on the fact that by constitution Italy refutes war as a way to resolve international disputes. The idea to become a nation was not something they came up along the way as explained in the movie, it was the plan all along knowing that a military operation would not be allowed by the constitution. After all Giorgio Rosa had been married with Gabriella since 1960. She was very aware of the law as depicted in the movie thus they knew what they were doing. IRL the matter was resolved by the police acting as it was a civilian issue and the military simply came in later with some divers to blow it up.

The problem is if you truly want freedom, whether by creating a homestead, gathering/hunting in whatever woods left, homelessness garbage diving, vandwelling, joining your ideal commune, etc. You would automatically cut yourself off from currency and thus health care. Also, living in western countries with a 9 to 5 job might actually be more 'free' because you'll have to work more to survive (laziness isn't freedom, but more/graver responsibilities do limit freedom in a sense)

Commune? No. Self sovereignty can be achieved though. Make it a goal to own a few citizenships on different continents, and real estate as well. I myself float around south america and north america regularly. But am looking at closing on real estate in south east asia soon.

You never hard of it because the movie blows it out of proportion. None of the most incredible things you see ever happened. The island never had that many people or requests of citizenship, nor it had to contend with a cruiser or shelled. In fact the people on board were arrested by the police and military demolished it. Rosa never had his case brought forward to the european commission nor a UN recognition of sort. Its still a very good movie and the island story is interesting but reality is faar from what is shown in the movie.
