I disagree, I think even if Moscow fell the south was more important due to oil. If I'm being honest, Barbarossa didn't fail because of the winter, they lost because of a lack of supplies and oil. Stalin was never going to surrender to Hitler until all of the Soviet union was conquered.

Hello Mr Terry! I'm a teaching student in history in Sweden and I want to throw in a small correction about Stalingrad. Taking Moscow would not necessarily have meant a German victory against the Soviets, that's a notion that was put forth by German generals after the war. By your own comparison, in Napoleons invasion of Russia he did in fact take Moscow and still lost the war. The push south towards Stalingrad was not just about a propaganda victory by taking Stalin's city but also to push past them and take the Baku oil fields. In fact during the planning of the invasion of the Soviet Union a key point from the start was that they needed to take Soviet oil since the German Wehrmacht was running out of gasoline which it needed to continue the war effort

13:48 Negotiations were happening, but condition under which america would remove embargo on oil was Japan withdrawing its troops from china. Japan was getting oil from other trade partners, but because world was at war majority of oil was reserved and supplied to European part of conflict. That means that only USA wanted to sell oil in amounts Japan needed.

RE: Your question about selling weapons I think it is one of those situations where it is very easy to lie to yourself. It would be very easy to tell yourself that your neutral and staying out of it. Also, that business is business and it's not your responsibility what the buyer is doing with these supplies. It's a classic stick your head in the sand or just cover your ears and hum. Lol. But, in reality you are only supplying one side. So you picked a side, and became an attackable supply line. The only way to actually be neutral would be to sell to nobody or everybody. (Also off topic, your videos are great and I bet you are an awesome teacher)

6:02 That's kinda wrong, Yugoslavia never wanted to be invaded and they did signed it. But later UK started the war between Yugoslavia and Germany so they can get more supporters and to open another front in Europe. Which led to total catastrophe for Yugoslavia (Serbia in general).

My grandpa fought in both italy and france. He told me many stories about how he was stationed in his birthplace of calabria, seeing the houses he helped build decimated.

My grandfather served in WWII but was never deployed. He almost was though. He was a bomber pilot and normally trained other pilots, but his division was just about to be sent out for an invasion of Japan when everyone's orders got put on hold and no one could figure out why. And then the bombs were dropped on Japan.

It should be mentioned that German soldiers were, in fact, issued winter clothing and gear. Their real problem lied in several different factors: 1. A lack of supplies. Hitler had not expected the invasion of Russia to take as long as it did, and so the Wermacht was left under supplied by the time they reached Moscow. This is compounded by the fact that Germany is suffering an oil shortage, making it difficult to move vehicles through the miles of Siberian wilderness necessary to supply and reinforce troops on the ground. Hitler had planned to alleviate this by securing oil fields in the Caucuses, which ultimately he failed at. 2. The Russian winter that year was one of the coldest and harshest on record. The Germans weren't stupid (incompetent on a leadership level, perhaps, but not dumb), they knew from history that Russia's weather would make or break their invasion. They invested considerable resources into weather research. Ultimately, for a number of reasons, this ended up proving fruitless in the end. By the time winter hit, it was far too late for anything to be done to improve the Wermacht's situation. 3. As mentioned in the video, Russian troops were far more equiped for winter combat than the Germans ever could be, by the sheer virtue of experience. Now, I'm no expert, this is just based on what I know and understand to be the case. I'm sure there's points I've missed and/or misconstrued, and that I will be corrected in the comments. In any case, however the situation was much more nuanced and complicated than simply "hurr de durr, the Germans forgot to bring their coats, look how stupid that was!". Not to say anyone was arguing that in the video, but some historical perspective is often lost in translation. Complicated issues get boiled down to simple, yet inaccurate ones.

At ~7:45 in the video, Mr. Terry says that “Russia got out of WW1 pretty early on”. I would say that 1917 is definitely not “pretty early on” considering that it started in 1914 and ended in 1918.

From U.K. I was born in the aftermath of the War. Those first years after, were lean and hungry. Food rationing actually got worse after the war. Even bread was rationed. Rationing did not end until 1954. My home town of Sheffield was a bomb site. All those wartime supplies from the US and elsewhere had to be paid for. The US helped with the Marshal Plan, but the British Army was still fighting (and consuming money) mostly in the Far East, wrapping up the Empire. Even fighting a war in Vietnam, before handing it back to the French. It was not until 31st December 2006, that the last payment was made to the US. For me this was not the 1939 to 1945 war, but the 1939 to 2007 war.

Thank you for doin reaction videos on the oversimplified videos. I love their subtle humor and that they are generally great at hitting key points but as a fan of wartime history, I prefer your reaction videos. They take more time to get through but you a great job diving in and opening up the discussion.

25:55 This is when the military leaders of Japan decided to send one of their remaining ships of the Imperial Navy on a dangerous suicide mission to Okinawa in hoping to stop the US from invading Okinawa. One of those ships is none other than the battleship called the Yamato. Japan's largest warship ever built in history. So Japan initiated a naval operation called Ten Go (meaning Heaven One) on 7th April 1945. This consists of ten warships, the battleship Yamato, a light cruiser and eight destroyer escorts. At the same time US Naval Fleet launched a wave of aircrafts to stop the Yamato. As the battle starts Yamato fought hard till the very end and after wave after wave of aircraft bombing the ship capsizes and exploded into two pieces and around over 2000 sailors' lives were lost during the Yamato's Final Voyage. This symbolizes the defeat of the Imperial Navy and representing the old Japan.

I think the winter-war (Finland vs USSR) had a big impact on the perception of the USSR as a "push-over". Basically if they struggle against tiny Finland, they cant be a threat. Big miscalculation.

15:00 an important thing to consider is that the attack on Pearl Harbor could've been much more effective had the US' aircraft carriers had been taken out. Their 3 Pacific fleet aircraft carriers were one of the primary targets of the attack but they were coincidentally not at Pearl Harbor at the time of the attack. If they had been there and been decimated, a lot could've changed in the Pacific theatre.

quick comment - my grandfather fought at Stalingrad (german side) but the day before the big capture was shot in the shoulder and sent home, basicly evading death or decades if forced labour by 1 day.

WW2 is a very fascinating part of history for me and i love Oversimplified and your videos with your input. Also THANK GOD Someone mentioned that Hitler was so confident, he thought the Russian Invasion would be over before Winter, he expected it to be over within 6 months. So he didn't bother to outfit his troops with any winter gear. And of course no one knows a Russian Winter like Russia. Also- awww look at Australia doing the stuff! im so proud!

You should watch Extra Credits videos on Otto Von Bismarck. There 5 or 6 vids and it's similar to Oversimplified but it's more informative

"The Russians pulled out of the war not very long into WW1..." Eh, what?! That is factually completely incorrect. Russia remained active in the war until the end of 1917 with millions of casualties. The Russian Republic succeeding the Tsar in spring of 1917 tried to stay in the war on the allied side. One of the more significant allied victories in 1917 happened on the Romanian front by the Russian and Romanian armies on a front consisting of more than 1 million troops. Russia only left WW1 in March of 1918 with the Treaty of Brest Litovsk after half a year after the Ocober Revolution. We are not talking about Russia just throwing in the towel here. They left the war just 8 months before it was lost in the West after having suffered millions in casualties and inflicting millions of casualties in return.
