People are still desperately trying to play this down and keep it all within the realms of "a polite coup" even though we know there were assassination plots, explosives planted, gallows erected and far-right terror groups openly planning to transport weapons across the river. Even now, after everything we know, people are still dancing around the obvious brutality of it all. Chris just alludes to the notion that the Secret Service was heavily involved in a coup attempt and they were just going to "move Pence out of the way". Some of us understand that it was vastly more violent than this. They weren't planning to "move" Pence, they were planning to "remove" Pence entirely.

I was going to voice this exact sentiment. Thank you, Steven. As a liberal in a state adjoining Indiana, I was aware of Mike Pence long before he became VP. He persecuted the LGBTQ community in his state, pushed for religion where it did not belong. Thankfully, when it came to upholding the US Constitution and his oath of office against the bullying of the Trumpists, Mr. Pence deserves full credit for following the law and protecting our democratic form of government.

Now that all the texts from Trumps Secret Service have been deleted....I have no doubt that Trump wanted Pence killed to stop the verification of the election. I have never heard the car story until now.

I also never heard driver story before. Not trusting of most stories.

Two things can be true at the same time. He did not want anyone seeing his motorcade leaving, as that shows weakness- as though the rioters won. And he was fearful and didn't trust his security, or what may happen to all of them if they left.

I personally think the driver story is a fabrication. Pence was smart enough to see what was happening, and knew what it would look like had he left, and completed his constitutional duty.

Laws are for the poor, can’t have the rich and powerful being charged like commoners, that would break the illusion.

I can't remember the exact words, but when announcing the confirmation of the ballots he did put in a twist to make clear that these were the real ballots or something like that.

Trump had already before this happened tried to pursuade him not to confirm the ballots but to send them back. In that light he knew exactly what was going on. I'm not a fan of him, but kudo's for him for doing the right thing at the right time.

Where ever they would have taken him, they weren't bringing him back. Their job 1 was to protect him, the Capitol wasn't safe. Or maybe he would have been found in the trunk of a car in need of an autopsy.

He definitely knew that would be his LAST RIDE ANYWHERE on earth!
