Haruki Murakami's The Norwegian Forest is much about death and pain. Nevertheless, the book leaves you with a sense of the transience and beauty of the moment. Talk about Murakami's style, ideas and characters. It's not so Japanese that you can't understand anything, but a couple of concepts from Japanese philosophy and culture are useful to learn.
