Hello hello, I hope you enjoyed the video and the thoughts on this little gem I wanted to share AND the lovely Ghibli clouds I was treated to by the weather :o Also much love to Squarespace again for sponsoring the video! Head to www.squarespace.com/teocrawford to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code "TEOCRAWFORD". Have a great week, Teo P.S I've noticed that the price for this camera seems to vary quite a lot across the globe. For reference, I often find this camera body in the 400€ range, which in my eyes is a good deal - I hope that clarifies a couple questions :)

I got my gx85 as a travel filmmaking camera about two years ago, and it's been an absolute joy to use. I love taking it on hikes and just getting nice shots. It sits right next to me on my desk just so I feel the urge to pick it up. I have a full cinema camera kit, but I still find myself reaching for it because I love its size and its limitations. I've shot multiple short films on it now, and the look has never disappointed me. It really is a perfect second camera.

You were a big part of me deciding to get this exact set-up and I never regretted it. Such a special combo. And it clearly inspires you because your photos with it are some of your best work imo. The big companies don't want people to know it but no, you don't need the latest gear to enjoy photography. In the contrary I would say. I have been shooting with a Nikon D60 and a 35mm 1.8 and I don't even know how old it is but if I didn't like cameras as much as I like ohitography I could very well just shoot with this combo or the GX80/20mm1.7 and be perfectly happy. Btw, if you use lightroom I highly encourage you to use the new denoise funstion. It's ofc not perfect but it makes photos that would have been unusable at high iso completely clean and even printable. There is no more excuse now to not use old gear (if you use lightroom).

You were partly what inspired me to get a GX85! Love your photos and how you can turn something seemingly mundane into something beautiful. Been a photographer for going on 10 years and was a micro four thirds guy for a while and sold everything for full frame when I started leaning heavier into video. I realized very quickly I didn't like the weight of the bodies or lenses when going on personal trips or for EDC. Also found out there was nothing "magical" or "unobtainable" with full frame. Yes shallow dof, blah blah; but a photo is so much more than blurry background. So I decided to go back to this exact setup, GX85+20mm f1.7. I told myself I would by a 12mm or a 15mm at some point but I absolutely love the 20mm, it never comes off. I still have my full frame Panasonic cameras for work but when it's just me and I want something light to throw in my pocket or a small sling pouch, it's the GX85 that comes with me.

Everything about this video is how i've been feeling for a long time. After many years and many test trials with digicams and even the x100 i finally found the camera sparks that joy and gives me that ease of use and burden-less feeling. I found a deal on the "old" sony rx1rii and that camera has completely resparked my love for photography. I use to shoot a lot with point and shoot film cameras, i would use them as my everyday carry whether i was going out with friends/family or on my commute to work, i would always make sure it would come with me. i would even make room for it in my camera bag on trips or my paid gigs. current film prices had got me looking more into digital point and shoots and long story short i ended up with the rx1rii and now my bigger sony has taken the back seat. its so nice to come across video that really goes into depth explaining that feeling ive been personally experiencing. this has definitely become one of my favorite videos here on youtube that ive watched in a long time, i couldve easily watched this video front to back 10+ times even if it was hours long. so yeah thank you for that :)

You're one of the reasons why I bought this as my compact travel camera. I remember watching your early videos and being stunned by the quality of photos this camera took and for how cheap it was for me to get. I have it paired with the 25mm 1.4 PanaLeica lens and its one of my most favorite combos out of all the cameras/lenses I've owned and it made shooting photos fun again. Also the 16MP isn't an issue for large prints since Lightroom has an AI upscaler and all large photos I printed from the files of this camera came out stunning. I'm glad to see this camera getting more recognition and it saved my back from traveling with Full Frame cameras like my S1H. Thanks for all your work

I feel the same about the gx80. I don't know what it is, but this camera inspires me to go out and take pictures. It's about the process of taking them and capture memories...and not about pixels and perfection. I always loved the idea of dealing with limitations. I would love to upgrade to the gx9 for the exposure compensation dial... because the rear dial on my gx80 has stopped working. And it's my 2nd one because of this. 😅

I'd like to point out that in the last decade or so progress on the digital camera front wasn't made by such huge leaps as it was earlier, meaning a person trying out photography can rely on older second hand models to cover 90% of their needs. Sure higher MP and ISO numbers are great but even having a camera that gives you usable 800ISO is just lovely. And I'd really like to be a guy starting out in this era. Congrats on making it so easy to understand for everyone!

Congratulations on your 1st digital camera. Be careful. This could be your gateway drug into photography. Word of advice. Newer, better, more expensive cameras won’t make you a better photographer. I know this through experience. Use the gear you have. Purchase primes if and when you need them. YT videos will help you become a better photographer. Books, as in how to or of images by photographers you like , will help you become a better photographer. Going to workshops or taking classes are also helpful. Your gear, especially your body, is the least import element of becoming a good photographer. The most important piece of gear you will ever have is about six inches behind your camera. Great video as usual! I also have this camera paired with a Leica 25mm. 1.4 which is the sharpest lense I've personally used on any camera. The 1.7 version seems to do the job as well though. You should have mentioned the lack of an anti-aliasing filter on this camera and the fact that it has IBIS. Both contribute to even sharper images depending on the situation.

I am totally convinced that the 16mp sensor in that camera is a hidden gem. I opted for the g85 though but is basically the same camera just in a different body style. My travel kit is the 8-18mm, 20mm, and the 50-200mm (used to be the 35-100mm which really made the whole kit tiny but wanted the extra reach). I'll even shoot up to ISO 3200, i find that sensor gets plenty noisy, but not like a ugly digial color-noise type like some cameras seem to do. Im convinced that with RNI (Really Nice Images) film profiles in lightroom + the images off this camera give such a unique look that I've been really satisfied with.

Wanna echo some of the other comments. You’re a huge reason I got my gx85 over a year ago. It is absolutely a fun camera and has made me a better photographer because I take it so many places I never used to take a camera. This was a beautiful love letter to this little beast!

I think an alternative lightweight (and more compact) option for a 24-70mm equivalent lens for your A7iii would be the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8, it's still an e-Mount lens even though it's a crop sensor (so it would be a 27-75mm on a full frame body). I use it a lot and the fact that it's so light is amazing. Great video!

I completely agree with the point you're making. Though, I'm most often rocking my a7rIV, which is a quite 'hefty' camera - especially for everyday shooting. But the way I've resolved the issue of carrying it around is by getting a really comfortable and light sling bag to to carry it in. Which has in turn brought back lot's of joy to the shooting process :) Great topic! And really love the footage!

I wanted to buy a film camera and found your videos. My local shop has a canon ae1 and i loved it but didnt want to bring it around everywhere, so i got an olympus mju and took that EVERYWHERE bc of how portable it is and i took so many more photos. Thats what inspired me to follow in your footsteps and get my gx80 as my digital shooter. I got a 20mm and later found out thats what you do too haha, i love that youre spreading the word that just having a camera on you is enough to get you to shoot more and improve - that olympus mju completely reshaped photography for me and so did my digital gx80

Glad you are enjoying your GX80. You need to use the right tool for the right job. For my street photography the GX85/9 works. It isn’t for everyone but is just fine for me. These bodies do what I need them to do and does it well. The same for M43 lenses. Best of all, the GX80(85) & 9 are inexpensive. Here is the thing. Older cameras that took nice images back in the day still take nice images. Good enough is good enough. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

With regards to your point on the super high ISO capability at 9:59; that high ISO isn't really useful for single shots, but if you're stacking shots using median blending in post, then you can get the benefits of higher shutter speed in low light while keeping low noise. It's the same technique many smartphones use to achieve such low noise in their night modes.

I just picked up a used GX80 Body couple of minutes ago and now partnered it with my Lumix 20mm f1.7. I also have a Lumix GX8, Leica 12-60 f2.8-4 and the Leica 15mm f1.7. Your videos has been one of the inspirations why I build a MFT system aside from owning Fujifilm APSC System. I am really impressed with the quality of photos the Lumix produces. Thanks for the videos!

Very nice selection of glass for your GX80. Congratulations. The GX8 might be a better camera than the GX80. At least it is different from its cousins. I too am also in Fujiland. I only own crop sensor cameras. Full frame, for me, offers nothing I can’t get from crop sensor bodies. God bless those of us that want or need full frame sensors. That is what makes horse racing. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. And I love your musings - finding a camera you want to use really resonates with me (I'm a professional wedding photographer who struggles to photograph my own life). My question for you is about how you're editing these photos you shared. Are they SOOC, made using Dehancer's photo profiles, or something else?

Teo, I love you and your work! Your videos are so calming and pleasing, your thoughts are brilliant and usually offer a more insightful perspective on things. Your setup reminds me a lot of mine: my main digital camera is an Olympus EM10 mark II paired with a 20mm f1.7 Lumix lens! It was my first ''serious'' camera, I bought it 3 years ago and it gave me some exquisite shots. Lately I've been enojoying the digicam trend, and I got myself a Canon Ixus 70 (the famous sd1000): well, it made me feel and think just as described by you in this video! While tecnically it's a bad and old camera, it actually helped me a lot getting rid of overthinking and made me take more pics! I'd love to hear you talk about digicams as well :) greetings from Rome, if you'll ever come I'd love to meet you!
