I must ask you because I have a light ppl myself and I would love to fly a glider but is that engine safe that close to your stabiliser? I mean those micro jets put out some serious heat wouldn't you be a bit safer with a bit of Aluminium.? I am not being rude just curious.? I'm sure that you have it under control but just wondering how you avoid stress.

There are gliders that use an electric propeller with folding blades to do more or less what this offers. I'm thinking that the jet is probably more weight efficient though run time is less.

@n1vca
@n1vca Рік тому
Maybe I missed that part, but for me a major point for any kind of propulsion on a glider would be the question if it offers you the capability of taking off on your own? Here someone had to pull you up with traditional motor plane, which creates a massive dependency on others and equipment as well as extra costs, but is this tiny jet really to weak to accelerate you on a "normal" length runway to a speed way beyond safe lift-off? I guess the roll resistance is so high that this jet is in the category of a more sophisticated hair-dryer ? 🙂
@moteroargentino7944
@moteroargentino7944 Рік тому
With enough runway it probably could, but if you want a powered glider then there are purposefully built ones. Gliders sacrifice all for performance in the air, including the self launch capabilities, that's why it's a sport. Win some, lose some. If you want it back, you'll have to sacrifice performance and you get closer to a regular aircraft. The point of this kits is to increase flight time and add capabilities while keeping added weight and drag to a minimum.
@n1vca
@n1vca Рік тому
@@moteroargentino7944 I have seen gliders with props on an electric motor that, just like this one, completely disappear into the fuselage, so they are aerodynamically no sacrifice, they are just like having a passenger behind you, some extra weight. And they have the ability to actually get in the air by themselves. So you think the extra weight is such a big sacrifice? This jet is obviously a very compact add-on that is strong enough to keep you in the air for quite a while, once you are up there. Maybe it also comes in handy if for whatever reason you end up above the clouds and you are looking for a safe hole to get back underneath again. I am not a glider pilot, but as a motor pilot this can easiely happen and then you are much more safe if you have enough fuel and can stay up there and find the right spot to descend, avoiding IMC.

Maybe with a very long runway and some drop tanks. Slowly accelerate, take off, gain altitude, drop the tank(s) safely over the airfield to lower weight and drag, then perhaps it would be viable. A piston-prop setup would be far superior for a glider.

@FarmerDrew Рік тому

@d00der41
@d00der41 Рік тому
@@FarmerDrew Yes, but at many places there isn't much fuel left after takeoff and climb to travel to ridges and thermals. These jet gliders don't have much distance after taking off, which is why he took off in tow. Hence why a piston-prop setup is an ideal powerplant for gilders.
