Just before his passing on January 10, 2014, Sam Berns was a Junior at Foxboro High School in Foxboro, Massachusetts, where he achieved highest honors and was a percussion section leader in the high school marching band. He also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Sam was diagnosed with Progeria, a rare, rapid aging disease, at the age of 2. He is featured in the Emmy award-winning documentary Life According to Sam, which premiered on HBO on October 21, 2013, 2 days before his 17th birthday.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This kid is 17? Jesus. The level of maturity and wisdom he displays is unbelievable. What an inspiration.
@yukimuratoru
@yukimuratoru 7 років тому
Brandon J or you only see it that way because you focus on his disability.
@brandonj189
@brandonj189 7 років тому
Retro Gaming Firstly, yes. The way he overcomes his disability daily is absolutely inspiring. Unbelivably inspiring. As it should be. And if you can't see that, it's your problem. Because I look at someone with a disability and that disability is apparent to me does not make me a bad person. It makes me realistic. There is nothing noble about ignoring such an obvious handicap. There is something to be said however, for seeing a handicap and then being able to look past it and seeing that how an individual handles their handicap so well and so optimistically absolutely adds to the inspiration, not detracts from it. The fact that I can look at him as an entire individual, as a whole, disability and all, is not a fault. It's part of what makes him who he is. And though it's not the only part, not by a long shot, I would venture to say it's a pretty damn big part. Secondly, he would be inspiring even without the disability. The kid is 17 and speaks with the intelligence and eloquence of someone twice his age or older. His maturity and world view are admirable qualities. So get off your high horse and don't make insinuations about why I would consider him an inspiration, when the truth is you don't have the vaguest notion as to what I find inspiring about this young man. Take your nonsense elsewhere.
@yukimuratoru
@yukimuratoru 7 років тому
Brandon J I was referencing your value to his maturity in relation to his disability, not to how he is inspiring. He is inspiring, and I was inspired by him because of his unbelievable strength and optimistic behavior. But he speaks exactly like many people around my age, 15-18, and I have seen many people younger than him speak that way and people are saying that he's mature when they aren't really looking at his maturity but the fact that he's on Ted talks and has a disability. It just annoyed me because people don't compare his maturity to a general population and instead say he's mature because of a disability. Just scroll down the comment section, many people are saying the exact same thing you originally said when it doesn't matter and it, again, annoyed me.
@brandonj189
@brandonj189 7 років тому
Retro Gaming That's patently ridiculous. I wasn't tying his maturity to his disability. And nothing I wrote should've led you to that conclusion. If you speak eloquently, then I congratulate you. But if you believe most kids that age speak so verbosely and with such diction, then you're naive. I have younger brothers and younger cousins around the same age and very few of them speak so well. I know relatively few adults that speak English the way it's meant to be spoken.
@yukimuratoru
@yukimuratoru 7 років тому
Brandon J Then I guess we just have different comparatives based on our own experiences with age-similar people.

According to the video's description, it's already been just over 10 years since we lost him. It's remarkable that he never let his condition take him over, and he fought proudly. I think pretty much the same way he did, in that you should always give yourself something to look forward to, and just be brave. In his 17 years of life, he truly made an impact. A huge one, at that. Rest easy, Sam. ❤️

He was too powerful for this world. when you are bombarded with the inevitability that your life could be over at any given moment your mind ages rapidly. but you also learn to love every living breathing moment. somehow, someway in this lifetime, we were able to experience the presence of Sam Berns. He is Loved. We will keep him in our hearts until our last breath. love yourself people. love every single day you get to exist.

My takeaways 1. Dont worry about the things you cant do but instead think about want to can do. - We often worry about the things which are not in our control. So there is no point to keep worrying about that. We need to focus on the things which is in our control. 2. Surround yourself with people enjoy - If you are surrounded by Toxic environment, need to get out immediately. Because your environment will define your personality and your ability for growth. For example,there are plants/fruits which will grow only in a particular environment like strawberries and Kiwi. If you want to grow strawberries in hot environment it will never grow, no matter how hard you try. So its really important to be in the right environment. 3. We need to keep moving forward. - We often think about past event which hurt us or was unpleasant. The duration of those unpleasant past events can be anywhere between 5mins to 10mins, but we keep repeating that 5min event in our head again and again. This causes the mind to be in negative state and we will have no control over the positive states like happiness, grateful, empathy. Its really important to be in positive states all the time to make good decisions and enjoy the present moment. Hence, to take our mind off the past events, we need to have something to look forward to and keep focusing on the goal which you want to achieve. This will help our mind to not focus on the past and help us to focus on our future goals.

@pencils1951 4 роки тому
@@ToeMunchEnja I believe I know how you feel. I too wrestle with certain possibilities and being a practical man coming to terms with my own experiences proved very difficult. I can't nor would I try to convince you because you have to have your own experience. Word alone is not enough, even if you did experience something you might think you're in need of medication. I am not talking psychics or spiritual meetings, I can only tell you of my parent's experiences. My father died in 1973 but six weeks before he told my mother his sister Amy came to him. she sat down on the bed just before father left the bedroom and told him it was time for him to prepare for his passing. She made two visits. After my father passed away it was mid-1984 whilst my mother was watching television when she saw my father sat opposite her. she thought she was losing her mind and left the room. She returned with a cup of tea but father was still there. This continued for the next eighteen months every two months or so, my mother passed away in 1986. My sister received visitations from our mother apparently to let her know she was alright, I never received any such visits. I cannot prove or disprove these claims, but when I was stationed in Germany I was on duty on my own when I had a number of experiences that were beyond explanation. However, I ventured to mention to fellow troop members what had happened and was told, "why do you think duty was taken in the guardroom". I have no explanation as to what happened, but suffice it say, it was not pleasant. This probably proves nothing to you as it's just my word, but I know what I saw and I would not try to convince you one way or the other. Justin.

It's because they know how to appreciate life, appreciate the world, appreciate everyone, appreciate everything. He went through so much but seems as if he had never despised anything at all. Man I'm an ungrateful sack sometimes. He was dealt some of the worst cards in life, but made one of the best lives out of it. I'm sure he comes from a great family. Rest in peace

Yeah, I’m ungrateful a lot too. I think we all need to improve and be happy and more like Sam.

" I belive I can change the world. And as I'm striving to change the world, I believe I'll be happy. " You have changed the world, Sam. And you'll keep changing it as long as your example will be passed on . You lived to deliver this message who will hopefully inspire generations of people. Thank you for your amazing life and wisdom!

Ice Carpenter I'm talking about his philosophy, not his aesthetic appearance. You see, I judge a person's "beauty" off of what's inside. I know that sounds super gay, but I feel the whole world would be way better off thinking this way.

The Stig i know what you mean but still i had to make a joke. I didn't listen to his talk, because its just ordinary typical self help ''accept yourself and think positivelly'', nothing that hasn't been told thousands of years ago. And I'm sorry but i don't find him beautiful, i wouldn't have found him beautifull if he was ordinary person without a disability either. Just my opinion, no hate.

Ice Carpenter Hey, no problem mate! Opinions are good, they provide diversity. And yeah, that is a good point. Guess it just struck me a different way coming from him. Cheers, and happy holidays!

It doesn't sound super gay at all. It makes perfect sense. This was an extremely brave and mature being inside that body and you are giving ultimate respect to that. Whatever is beautiful to you is your right and your peace. There will always be ignorant and cowardly fools like Ice Carpenter to try and bum people out because they are so bummed on life themselves. Don't let his negativity bully or change your way of thinking. Keep up the positivity Stig. You will feel better and so will everyone around you. (except for people like Ice Carpenter.)

While he had lived on earth for just 17 years he had positively enjoyed his life and if can have gratitude for his little life full of a lot of daily challenges why can't we can have gratitude towards our lives? Why can't we can have a positive outlook for our lives? Remember life is a precious gift of god so live it at it's best...❤

What an amazing kid. It takes very few to have such a positive outlook on life when having to overcome so many obstacles. It is devastating to read he died shortly after but he is in a better place.
