Antique Headphones with Broken Electronics - Restoration

In this video I'm restoring a pair of antique German headphones. I've found these headphones at an online auction for $30 and I thought they look pretty cool for a restoration project.
Unfortunately they didn't work anymore. I measured the coils and three of the four were broken. That fact put this little project to a whole new challenge. It required a ton of research to completely understanding every single detail of its function to remake the coils and such. After some trial and error I managed to remake the broken bobbins and rewind the coils. The tricky part was that both coils are connected with eachother at the beginning of the windings in the core. I had to make a special jig, so I could clamp both coils when winding the second one.
The original paint had some kind of a structure in it. It was black matte with some kind of a hammertone pattern. Unfortunately I was not able to find such paint, so I went with regular black matte. To not loose the were fine writings and logo I only applied a very thin layer of primer and coat.
The Bakelite pieces just required some wet sanding and a good polish and they looked like new again. Old Bakelite might contain asbestos, that's why I wet sanded them so there won't be any sanding dust.
I cleaned the membranes with scotch brite after a 24h bath in rust remover. To get rid of the pitting I sanded it with 240 grit sandpaper. I was already down to 0.13mm from 0.2mm thickness, but there was still pitting visible and I just sanded one side. To get the best possible sound at the end I decided to remake both membranes with new 0.2mm steel foil. To match the original membranes I also painted the center black matte.
I nickel plated all the screws and the two brackets like they were originally. The brackets were a little bit weird, because they were two identical ones instead of pair of mirrored ones. I fixed that pretty easy by just bending the shaft on one ion the opposite direction.
I was very lucky that the cable was in nearly perfect condition. It had absolutely no visible damge or fraying, just lost a bit of color. I just had to shorten them. Todays headphones all work with AC, these however back then worked with DC. Therefore the polarity matters. I also marked all endings of the cable with red and black threads, so did I made a red and black plastic cover for the plugs.
In the end I'm very happy how these headphones have turned out. The color combination of the black matte with the shiny black Backelite parts look very classy together with the shiny nickel plated parts and the crispy clean looking knurling is the cherry on top.
I hope you like my work and the video.

One could, on that basis, claim that it is not restoration, but rather "recreation using original parts". There is a subtle difference: If a museum is to restore something, those historic flaws (or, say, sharp edges) are kept to document how the period techniques were. Although there are occasional liberties taken, I often find this channel more faithful to history than many others. Kudos for that!
@badgerservices9665
@badgerservices9665 Рік тому
@@marstr2 There are different kinds of restoration, MMs are at one extreme of the scale, but I think its still a restoration and not a recreation at all. Certainly his work would not be appreciated by a museum curator who likes original patina and authentic dust. MM brings old items back into the modern age, maintaining autheticity, bringing the item to the highest standard it could ever reach, showing its true potential. His items will last another lifetime, fully functional and in a brand new condition... which also has much value for historians in the future. Take this recreation here... had it been kept in the condition it was found in a museum, it sure would look old and historic, but it would not work and besides looking at it, what value does it bring? Noone could actually use it as intended. Now, thanks to MM, it can be plugged into a laptop and used to listen to anything downloaded from the internet. You could even run old recorded German airforce radio chatter through it. Hows that for an historical experience? There is a balance when it comes to restoration and I think MM does it so tastefully. I am fully supportive of his work. I dont think he detracts from the historic value of these items one bit.
@marstr2
@marstr2 Рік тому
@@badgerservices9665 I think we're were close to completely agreeing. A restoration should return something to a useable state, in contrast to a pure preservation, which just freezes the current state. Hence, replacing parts that are FUBAR is completely ok in all respects. Removing purely visual artifacts is also a way rewriting history, but that is probably a purist view. Throwing away that blue cover was perhaps the only place in this video where he made something new in place of something that actually worked, with the membranes being a border case. (I don't know how the corrosion would have inpacted the sound quality, and thus the demonstration of the original performance.)

My favourite thing about your work is not just the attention to detail, but you also do your best to make the thing actually work as optimally as possible. No other UKposts restoration channel would remake the coils or bother getting an impedance meter to correctly adjust the headphones, or even know to do it at all. You're on another level. Just an insane amount of artistry is put into everything you do. Thank you for the incredible videos.

The year is 2096. My Mechanics has grown old and grey, but still makes these wonderful videos. The camera pans to a hospital bed, where he systematically explains all the faults with his aging body with on screen captions and perfectly framed close-up shots. A quick disassembly later and the extent of the damage is revealed - joints are seized and arthritic, but the bones and muscles are in excellent condition. The camera zooms in on a hip joint, showing pitting and damaged bone. A caption pops up. "I make a new one." 34 minutes of gorgeously edited footage of amazingly talented machining and tool work ends with a smooth assembly and the trademark before and after shots, showing a much younger looking My Mechanics. The audience is left to wondering how he possibly managed to restore himself.

It's basically the same as winding guitar pickups, and I found creating whole new bobbins without the use of a 3D printer to be the most interesting part of rewinding the coils since I've wound a coil or two -- one in the field when I had a camera take a dunk in a Mexican river and had to rewind the shutter coil to get it working again, or face not having a camera for three or four months. I never did get around to dialing in the 1/1000 shutter speed, it's more like 1/800 because my hand wound coil is just a little bit weaker.

Due to the fact that this channel can get money based on the number of views per video allows this guy to spend insane amounts of time and effort on restoring these items way beyond expectations. I read some comments saying that other channels seem to purposely corrode items, or just straight up cover them with dirt and muck, and that's a true shame. You actually either receive or find genuinely old, beat up, rusty, broken things and bring them back to life. Dedication just shows in every minute of your videos. The popularity of the "restoration" genre has grown exponentially over the last 5 or so years on UKposts, leading to an endlesss ocean of restoration channels/videos, but I believe your channel is the high water mark. Your video quality and restoration skills are the shining example that everyone else strives to achieve. The fact that you were able to stand out from all the other similar titles and thumbnails to gain traction and find a footing, and that you continue to consistently get millions of people to sit still for 20 minutes and watch you work with your hands without a single word, and that all those people are left eagerly awaiting your next upload is a testament to the quality of your hard work. Sorry for the long comment, it just seemed like lot of people were saying how bad other restoration channels are as a way to highlight how great yours is, but I thought that negativity was detrimental to the compliment they were trying to pay you, so I wanted to try to put it more positively.
