I've seen many spirits in my lifetime. It's great you aren't closed off to the idea of the possibility of spirits. To me it seems like you already know or have felt them, you just haven't properly been able to identify how they're communicating. I highly suggest kardec's books as he helps to guide people in the right direction. For example one common belief is that when you sleep, your mind becomes succeptible to energies like an antenna. While I did not develop my mediumship (and having seen a lot of "marmotagem", which means fake mediumship, I grew skeptical of it), I did talk very often with spiritual guides that were incorporated into a medium's body. Mind you that Umbanda is all about compassion and charity, that's the whole basis of the faith, which was founded in the early 20th century by Zélio Fernandino de Moraes. During giras, which are Umbandist rituals to call the spirits in order to perform healing and advisement, I often talked with spiritual guardians such as Eshus, Pombojiras, Zé Pelintra, Pretos Velhos, Baianos, Caboclos and many others. Umbanda is vast and a very interesting path, and while I don't believe in the things I used to, I still respect it for being what brought me out my worst days and accepting me as I am, while still encouraging me to become a better person.

No one can explain "how" this practice is acquired other than by sitting at seance sessions and finding they can perform these acts after a time of practice and learning. It just comes down to one being interested, and having the right mentored to help you develop your mediumship properly or you will find many self proclaimed practitioners which are unfortunately found in all religions. Things like developing mediumship do not happen overnight. Just cause it is not culturally accepted in some areas does not mean it's esoteric. Alot of it comes down to your families belief system and how much you were exposed to as a child. I grew up in a religious cuban household. For me to have seen spirits at the age of 6-7 before my grandma's passing, and now to have been apart of many spiritual investigations (misa), it's actually interesting to see how resistant people are to change. I haven't heard anyone claim that only certain people can be spiritists, but I have heard that only certain people end up becoming great spiritists because of dedication, great mentorship and never being close minded. All it takes is one ceremony for someone's entire perspective to change. Once you experience first hand one of your dead relatives pass through the body of a medium that you have never met before, their voice changes, eyes change (not color), body language.
