Maslenitsa comes from the ancient pagan holiday of seeing off winter, which was preserved after the adoption of Christianity. This is first of all a lot of hearty food, so there is nothing complicated in eating at this time, trying a variety of dishes and not denying yourself anything. The main dish on Shrovetide is, as you know, pancakes, which are baked every day from Monday. Maslenitsa is also known for national festivities: dancing, singing, sledding, building a Maslenitsa effigy, bonfires, and so on. Maslenitsa continues for a week.
Why Maslenitsa? Because on this day they consumed a lot of fatty food. It was cottage cheese, butter, dumplings with cottage cheese and butter, hence the name Maslenitsa. In addition to this, there are a lot of regional names. This is Kolodiy, and start, cheese week, Syropust. Since Maslenitsa in Ukraine is more of a women's holiday, there was also the name Babsky holiday, Babsky week.
